2021-22 BH Handbook

Student Life

Each student is a member of a clan. The purpose of clans is to provide a smaller-group student experience with a focus on building a strong sense of community, and providing students from different grades with an opportunity to get to know one another. There are eight twinned Junior and Senior clans. Students moving from the Junior School to the Senior and Middle School will automatically be placed in the corresponding sister clan. Students new to Branksome Hall will randomly be placed in a clan. Clan placement is also determined by a sibling’s or a related alum’s clan.

Each Senior School and Middle School clan has a Senior Chieftain and a Grade 8 representative, elected by its members.

Advisor groups are composed of students in the same grade and clan, encouraging friendships to develop. Clan meetings and activities occur during Community time throughout the year.

Student Government

Student Life Council: Grades 7-12

Grades 7 to 12 elect representatives from their grades for the Student Life Council. The committee’s membership also includes five to seven teachers and staff members. The purpose of this organization is to give students and teachers the opportunity to discuss and take action related to school-wide issues. Student Life Council is chaired by the Student Government Prefect. This committee meets at lunch on alternating Mondays.

Assembly Committee: Grade 8

Students from each Grade 8 Advisor group are elected to this committee and help to organize the Middle School assemblies.

Our House Committee: Grade 7

Students from each Grade 7 Advisor group are elected to this committee. This group helps on projects and events for the Middle School.

School Dances

Branksome-hosted school dances are held on campus. If physical distancing restrictions are in place, events such as dancing are not permitted and the school will host alternative community programming virtually or in-person to enable students to connect and have fun with their peers.

The Flare

The Flare is the Grades 7 and 8 dance, held on a Friday in October from 7:00-9:30 p.m. Grades 7 and 8 students from a number of boys’ schools are invited.

Students will not be admitted after 9:00 p.m. at all Senior School dances.

Family Formal

All students in Grades 7-12 are welcome to attend with a member of their family. Divorced parents may also share a ticket.

The Formal

Students in Grades 11 and 12 may attend this dance.

Branksome Hall does not support student-coordinated off-site dances and events, and students are prohibited from promoting these events on campus or via Branksome email. Please see the Code of Conduct for more information.
