Welcome to the July and August edition of The Bromsgrove Oracle. The last few months have really been quite a challenge but it does feel like we are beginning to see some signs of a return to “normality” although I’m genuinely not sure what normal will turn out to be for some ?. The challenge has been and indeed is very real and everybody has been affected in many different ways, so even modest shoots of optimism and positivity are very welcome. My mantra has always been to promote the vital link between local businesses and our community and now more than ever, we need to come together and support each other in helping Bromsgrove through this crisis. My message now is to “Buy Local” whenever possible, to support our local community and our local economy. Our magazine is and always has been a fantastic place to promote and find out more about local businesses, events, news and information from around our community (all linked to and promoted on our website and social media). – Why not enter or “Find Wol” competition for your chance to win £50.00 - Simply find the hidden image of our friendly Owl “Wol” inside the magazine, go to our website www. thebromsgroveoracle.co.uk and enter the competition for your chance to win, it’s very easy to enter and like the saying goes “you’ve got to be in it, to win it”……Good Luck “Find Wol” - Last Issue’s Lucky Winner was Margaret Buckley …….. well done Margaret and we hope you enjoy your prize. We really do enjoy providing our magazine for you, we value your contributions and your feedback and please don’t hesitate to provide me with your suggestions for future editions. Hope you enjoy this latest edition and don’t forget YOU can provide YOUR events, news and information too ?. Until next time. Lyndon.

EntertainmentNews News Entertainment Artrix Lives to to Fight FightAnother AnotherDay Day

The Bromsgrove Standard reported on 5th June that the District Council has taken the decision to acquire all of the assets of Artrix, thus giving more time for discussions as to how to keep the Arts Venue open. The Council is to be thanked and congratulated for taking such a positive and forward thinking decision at such a difficult time financially. Because of the Lockdown, Artrix, in common with all other theatres, cinemas and music venues, would have been closed anyway

and with no date set for this situation to change, there is time for the Council to consult widely at ground level with former and current employees, volunteers, performers, event promoters, Bromsgrove Arts Alive and successful local business people as to how to make the venue financially viable in the future. In recent years the Council has talked about developing the “ Night Time Economy “ in Bromsgrove. It would be beneficial to this strategy if people working in the Town were encouraged to stay on after work and people from outside the Town were

encouraged to visit in the early evening, have a meal at a restaurant or pub, and then go on to see a show at Artrix. So, to do this, when Artrix re-opens, it would be great if the Council would consider making parking in the New Road, Windsor Street and Hanover Street car parks free after 5pm. Yes, there would be a loss of income for the time between 5pm and 7pm but how much anyway is the extra income from these three car parks between these early evening times?

Enjoy More Time Outdoors This Summer Bruce Grant, owner of Garage Doors Worcestershire said: “There are many benefits to having an awning. If your kitchen, living room or dining room is constantly exposed to the sun, an exterior awning will absorb heat gain during the day, making the temperature in your home more comfortable - without having to keep the curtains and windows closed all day.” With foreign travel still looking problematic, UK Staycations not suiting everyone, and many still feeling self-isolation is the safest option; the reality is that many people will choose to simply stay at home this summer. If youʼre planning a stayat-home English summer youʼll probably also be planning to spend a lot of time in your garden. Nowʼs the perfect time to think about installing a stylish patio awning which will allow you to enjoy more of your outdoor area by offering shade from the sunʼs heat and protection from harmful UV rays, whilst ensuring rainfall wonʼt dampen your family BBQ.

Retractable awnings extend your homeʼs living space by turning a section of your garden into an additional dining space, outdoor play area for your children or simply a place to relax in the fresh air. Operating throughout Bromsgrove and beyond, family-business Garage Doors Worcestershire provide high quality retractable garden awnings. Professional installation ensures correct operation and awnings are available with a 5 year manufacturerʼs guarantee. Enjoy browsing the wide selection of styles, fabrics, finishes and colours - with something to suit everyoneʼs garden design style.

Garage Doors Worcestershire also stock lighting and heating accessories for maximum comfort when enjoying your outdoor area. So, with a few additions to your outside space you can spend more quality time in your garden this summer whatever the weather! Travel News We Need Cross Country Trains to Stop in Bromsgrove

On Sunday 23 February the new Worcestershire Parkway Station (WOP) opened. Located between Junction 7 South of the M5 and Pershore, it is an Interchange Station, enabling passengers travelling north and south on the Cross Country Services to and from Birmingham New Street, Cheltenham (where you can change for trains to and from Bristol and the West Country) and Cardiff, to connect with GWR services on the Cotswold Line to and from Worcester Shrub Hill, Oxford, Reading and Paddington. Disappointingly, because none of the 600 plus Cross

Country services per week which thunder through Bromsgrove currently stop at Bromsgrove Station, for the people of Bromsgrove to take advantage of the benefits of Parkway they have either to travel by rail to and from University or New Street Stations to catch a Cross Country Service; or to have 50 minute round trip car journeys down and up the busy M5 and then onto the B4084 to the new station, with the extra costs and time that either of these options entail.

vice versa, it is only an approximately ten minute journey between the two stations. By the trains stopping it would bring significant economic and environmental benefits to the businesses and people of North East Worcestershire.

Why? Both of these two options are unnecessary.

As Council Tax Payers we have made a financial contribution to the building of Parkway – we are entitled to some of the benefits!

If the Cross Country Trains which stop at Parkway stop also at Bromsgrove, or

Help BARRUP in its campaign to have Cross Country Trains stop at both Parkway and Bromsgrove. Write to or email your local District and County Councillors to put pressure on Cross Country Trains to do so.

Why a Strong Brand is So Important

Justin Hegenbarth at Spud Design has helped many new start-ups and small businesses plant the seed and nurture their brand, and in turn grow their business. So, what exactly is a brand? Itʼs the sum of peopleʼs perception of your company, itʼs customer service, reputation, ethos, marketing and logo. When all of these parts of the business are working well together, the overall brand tends to be healthy. Justin says, “Although, crucial, branding is often overlooked by many small

businesses, often seen as expensive or simply too time consuming.” Itʼs more than just a logo, a strong brand needs to flow across all aspects of a business, from stationery, brochures and flyers to websites, social media graphics and signage. Six reasons why branding is essential for your business: 1. Branding improves recognition. 2. Branding creates trust. 3. Branding supports advertising. 4. Branding builds financial value.

5. Branding inspires employees. 6. Branding generates new customers. Client relationships are crucial to Justin; he loves to understand how they tick and then to work with them to develop creative, targeted, cost-effective collateral to get their business noticed. If you are thinking of refreshing your branding or starting a new business then get in touch with Justin at Spud Design. 01527 834622 or email info@spud-design.co.uk

Restaurant News Chef Cooking Free Meals for the Vulnerable make people happy and make a difference to their day means an immense amount to me. Weʼve cooked these meals with love and passion. Every year almost 2 million tonnes of surplus food is wasted by the UK food industry! This initiative helps stop this massive waste of food whilst having a positive impact on the local area by helping those in need.”

Chef Lorenzo Richards

The Wildmoor Oak Pub and Restaurant in Bromsgrove has been helping to provide free healthy meals for vulnerable people in the community during the Covid-19 crisis. Having set up a takeaway service, when Lockdown closed his venue to the public, Chef Lorenzo Richards also wanted to do something to help those struggling during the pandemic. Lorenzo seized on an initiative to recycle food from supermarkets and warehouses that would otherwise be destroyed. Working in partnership with FoodCycle in Longbridge he prepares meals every

Tuesday, in the kitchen at The Wildmoor Oak. These are collected by FoodCycle the next day and distributed to anyone in need - such as low-income families, asylum seekers and refugees, the elderly, and people dealing with mental health issues. The venture is also supported by CERT (UK), a charity which supports local community groups throughout the pandemic. Lorenzo has donated his time, along with a team of five volunteer staff from The Wildmoor Oak. Lorenzo said: “Food is something Iʼve always used to please people, so to have the opportunity to send food out that will

Jody Beswick from Food Cycle said: “A huge thank you for the effort Lorenzo and his team put in to supporting us with our food parcel service. The Wildmoor Oak has been bringing a bit of happiness to the people we try to help in these challenging times. Our volunteers get a buzz when the food arrives, eager to see what Lorenzoʼs team has prepared.” FoodCycle is a national charity established in 2009 with a vision for a society where no one is hungry or lonely. Every week The Wildmoor Oak prepares over 300 meals for distribution via the Longbridge hub. For more information visit facebook.com/wildmooroak

A Statement from Primrose Hospice’s CEO certain and we will require all the support we can obtain from our wonderful community. We are currently looking at plans to safely reopen our shops but this will be a huge challenge. After a frenetic few weeks, we have now entered a stage where we are refining some of the procedures and processes that we have put in place rapidly when lock down started in March. We have been reflecting and improving some ways of working and learning how to live with Covid 19 and ensure as far as possible that patients, clients, staff and volunteers remain safe and supported. Itʼs been a huge challenge for staff as we lost almost all our volunteers, though we are very pleased that Family Support continues to be provided by our volunteer counsellors. Determined We have always been determined to play our part during the pandemic: we have invested heavily in

additional staff time for Family Support and to move our nursing services to 5 days per week to provide additional support and continuity for our patients. We have invested in technology: five additional smart phones and six additional laptops, cameras, gaining remote access to clinical systems and learning to use innovative communication systems. We have learned how to support and comfort someone remotely where possible. We continue to learn. We have benefited from central funding and the kindness of companies, individuals and groups to maintain our services. Future While this has been hugely welcome, the future is less

In all this it is important that we consider the “silver linings”. People often ask me “When do you think we will return to normal?”. Itʼs clear the “new normal” will be different as we learn to live with Covid 19. Coronavirus has stimulated us to think radically about the future and how we provide care and support. We have already learnt new ways and we will shortly embark on further considering how we will sustain and develop services. Covid 19 will be a catalyst for change and Primrose Hospice and Family Support Centre will embrace this opportunity to improve our services over the coming months. David Burrell CEO Primrose Hospice

Bromsgrove Cricket Club Update

T20 action shot

Festival Crowd 2019

The spell of fine weather in May and June has made it even more galling that the Club has been unable to play any cricket so far this season due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. There has been a little light at the end of the tunnel however, as Cricketʼs Governing Body, the ECB, allowed all Recreational Cricket Clubs to allow Net Practice from 1 June, under strict social distancing guidelines. The Club developed an App which enabled members to book 45 mins practice slots on line. This has proved very successful in enabling our members of all ages to

prepare for when they can play matches once again. Disappointingly, both for us and for people who had bought tickets already, we have had to postpone the Music Festival, planned for Sunday 5 July.

The lack of cricket has meant a lack of income from subscriptions, match fees, bar revenue, sponsorship et al, and the loss of the Music Festival is another blow to the Clubʼs revenue. Fortunately, thanks to our new main sponsor, ANP Training, and several senior members of the Club, making generous donations, we remain in sound financial shape.

However, we have rescheduled the 2021 Festival for Sunday 4 July, so make a note of the date in your diaries.

Once we are allowed to start playing Cricket again at St. Godwalds Park, we will advise everybody via our website and social media.

Our Ground Team continues to work hard on keeping our three grounds in excellent condition – in fact we think that they donʼt want us to play at all because it would spoil the current pristine appearance (we jest!).

Delivering a Frontline Service for Pets Clent Hills Vets Rising to the Challenges of the Pandemic Like many community businesses, Clent Hills Vets in Bromsgrove faced a number of unique challenges when lockdown was introduced in March and social distancing became the new norm. Consolidating its services to enable care for pets to take place safely, within Covid-19 guidelines, the Bromsgrove practice was chosen as a central hub for handling emergency treatment and delivering essential care for clients across the Group. Telephone consultations were introduced to reduce face-to-face contact, with online ordering for certain medication and food, and online payment added for convenience and safety. For pets requiring appointments, extra measures had to be put in place to protect staff and clients, such as petonly consults, no home visits, contactless collections, additional cleaning protocols, and staff in full PPE masks, gloves and gowns. Clent Hill’s emergency number has enabled pet owners to contact a vet day or night regarding urgent conditions, which are clearly listed on their website. Due to the very nature of their work, social distancing within the practice is not always possible and so some services have become more restrictive. Perspex screens and Coronavirus related signage was installed, in preparation for reopening.

Kate making PPE

Staff have also played a part in supporting the wider community, from clapping for the NHS to making PPE for the Worcestershire Royal Hospital and shopping for elderly neighbours.

“Clent Hills Vets are amazing. Always able to get an appointment when needed and the vets are so caring and thorough, explaining everything. Service is perfect even when facing the difficulties of Covid-19.” Georgi W

“Our kitten had a really sore weepy eye and we went to Clent Hills Vets. The vet sorted her eye and it’s so much better now. They offer a great service during these very difficult times.”

Caroline H J

“We are following Government, BVA (British Veterinary Association) and RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) guidelines to ensure we provide the very best care for pets with the safety of everyone as a priority. Our working practices may be a little different but our high level of service remains the same.” Head Vet Alun Edwards

Community News Community News Popular Club ClubSeeks SeeksFunding Funding Support Popular Support

A Bromsgrove social club dating back to the 1920’s is appealing for help following its temporary closure in March due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Stoke Prior Sports and Country Club has an outdoor building housing toilets and showers but the building fell victim to bad weather during the winter season. Damage to the roof during storms Ciara and Dennis earlier this year, caused internal leakage and the building is now in need of urgent repair or rebuild. With reduced income, due to the closure of the venue for several months, there

are insufficient funds to finance the necessary repairs. So, manager Mark Goddard has embarked on a GoFundMe crowd-funding campaign, with the help of staff James Maycroft and Natasha Jones. The target is £10,000 and depending on how much is raised they will repair, renovate, or replace the building. Set in 10 acres of lawned grounds the venue has a tradition of playing host to a wide variety of local festivals, community gatherings and sporting activities but relies on its outdoor facilities to meet the needs of people attending and taking part in these events.

The club started life in the 1920s as a wooden building constructed by workers from the nearby ICI factory. It eventually became a membersʼ club but burnt down in the 1980s, leading to portacabins stationed on the car park, until the existing brick building could be built. The club was sold to its current owners Wilf Goddard and Nigel Meredith in 2001. It has been managed by Wilfʼs grandson, Mark Goddard, since 2015. Open Day will Reopen Rock School

Bromsgrove Rock School plans to reopen on Saturday 3 October following its temporary closure on 21 March, due to Covid-19 restrictions. The first session of the autumn term will be a special Open Day, providing a great opportunity for budding young musicians to meet the staff and listen to some of the bands. Brian Hoggard, owner of Bromsgrove Rock School, has been working hard with his team to put in place special measures to keep the young members safe when they return to their weekly sessions - held at St Peterʼs Catholic First School in Rock Hill. Full details will be issued ahead of the start of term, based on the latest guidance.

Bromsgrove Rock School offers young musicians and singers the chance to work with other young people as part of a band. It is a safe learning environment where the musicians can test a variety of skills, to help them identify where their true talents lie. Sessions will run every Saturday from 3 October to 12 December (half term break 31 October). Juniors (8 - 13 years) meet from 10.30am - 11.30am. Seniors (13 -18 years) have a 2 hour session from 11.30am to 1.30pm. The last session of each term is ʻShow Dayʼ, which takes place at a local venue, allowing friends and family the chance to see the young musicians performing live on stage.

Junior band member Henry said: “I canʼt wait to get back to Rock School because I can see all my friends and we can play together in a band again.” Teenager Storm said: “Not being able to go to Rock School has been really hard. Iʼve missed the one-to-one support that Brian and the team are able to offer us and Iʼve not played with my band, Limitless, for months.” Bromsgrove Rock School was set up in April 2017. It is open to singers, songwriters, bassists, drummers and keyboard players, who can choose to work as solo artists, duos or in a band. Coughton Court After the long winter, migrating birds return from milder climates to spend the summer in the UK. Find out how you can spot and identify these feathered friends in your garden or on a walk, or learn how to help the birds where you are, whether you're in a town, city or the countryside. You can also discover how to identify different birdsong. Birdsong can be a delightful sound to hear at dawn and dusk. The calls of song thrushes and house martins can be welcome sounds in places full of busy noises, and spotting a chiffchaff flitting about in a tree can make you stop and take notice of nature for a while. As the days warm up, opening your window on an early morning can bring the freshness of the season into your home. When you take a moment to listen, you'll begin to notice different calls of birds enjoying the bluer skies with you. Birdsong is a sign that native species have returned to our gardens and streets, telling us that sunnier days are on their way. Enjoy the chorus of birdsong wherever you may be, and share videos and photos with loved ones to connect others to what you hear. Though others may seem far away right now, hearing birdsong together can bring a sense of peace in turbulent times. Why not video call a loved one in your garden to experience this together? Some of the easiest bird species to spot are our native garden birds, and you can improve your chances by creating a welcoming habitat for them. A garden full of native shrubs, flowers and grasses and free of excessive fertilizer and pesticide will be much more inviting for birds and may tempt in some unusual ones. Plants such as rowan, wild cherry and elder are particularly good – birds will love their berries and the insects they attract. If you feed birds peanuts, crush them up first as young birds can choke on full-sized nuts. Overall the best approach is to feed birds foods that would naturally be growing at that time of year – seeds in the summer, nuts in the autumn.
