Inside Moxy Hotel’s New Millennial-Friendly Game Room Bar Downtown

It’s opening day for the whimsical Moxy Hotel, the millennial-targeted Marriott brand that wants to help D.C. lighten up after work.

The chic 14-story hotel (1011 K Street NW) is scheduled to debut at 3 p.m. Monday, November 26. It features a bright bar that decorated with hot pink flamingos that doubles as the check-in stand. The lobby functions as a new gaming destination for the 9-to-5 set. Upon entry, guests can stuff their laptops and bags into lockers while playing foosball, patio bocce, or board games. Ping pong games are intended to go late into the night.

The lobby areas juxtapose throwback elements with modern decor. There’s a retro rotary phone booth close to the Guestbook, a screen airing a live Instagram video feed of guests’ hotel stays at Moxy’s nearly 40 properties across the world. Lived-in apartment accents include cozy couches, sports trophies, and a soda can installation color-coded to look like an American flag.

DJ Farrah Flosscett is handling the music for opening day festivities and will be accompanied by a drag performer from Screaming Queens Entertainment.

The modern lobby is outfitted with old school board games like Scrabble and Monopoly.

The bar is filled with lots of local distillers and breweries, like DC Brau, Atlas, Anxo, Green Hat Gin, Republic Restoratives, and Joseph A. Magnus.

A rotary phone adds to the old-meets-new vibe at Moxy Hotel.

Play money frames a TransitScreen sign, which shows guests what time the next nearby Metro ride is.

The soaring industrial-style lobby area features garage doors that’ll roll up during warmer months.

Passers-by on K Street NW have a clear shot of a white carousel horse inside Moxy Hotel.

The bar at the Moxy Hotel doubles as the check-in stand, where guests are handed poker chips redeemable for a free drink of choice.

The brand recently debuted two New York City hotels, one in Times Square and a second location downtown in the Financial District.

The affordable hotel boasts room rates starting in the low $100s.

The lobby’s offbeat food station — accented by trophies and globes — features grab-and-go fare and coffee.

Metal bicycle handles act as wall “antler” art.

The hotel encourages day drinking with morning cocktails like a cold brew Old Fashioned, available every day starting at 8 a.m. The main menu includes six naan flatbreads, sandwiches, and salads. The bar is open daily until 1 a.m., with happy hour from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The splashy debut of its guest rooms and lobby areas will be followed by dining and drinking attractions next spring, including a glass-enclosed rooftop bar overseen by Baltimore-based hospitality power Atlas Restaurant Group.

Moxy has hip hotel bar competition just a block away on K Street NW. The 209-room Eaton features rooftop and lobby drinking destinations, an all-day cafe called Kintsugi, and the recent arrival of Tim Ma’s lobby-level American Son restaurant.
