Course Description

RISD CE course in lighting for interior design

Design by Michael Camara

Lighting has a significant impact on human well-being. It is a crucial component in creating atmosphere and enabling the function of an interior space, and can be used to define architectural space, enhance texture in surface materials, and reveal form in furnishings. In this course students will explore the main objectives in a successful lighting selection for design projects: proper lighting selection based on the conditions of the space; function, safety and aging-in-place considerations; aesthetics; and client satisfaction. With a focus on new technologies and sustainable lighting solutions, students learn about sources, fixtures and systems as they develop creative, functional lighting plans for a variety of residential spaces.

Students must be prepared to communicate their design solutions either digitally (AutoCAD or equivalent) or through scanned hand rendering.
