(WTNH) — Republican State Auditor Rob Kane was found dead at his Watertown home on Friday, Watertown police say.

According to Watertown police, officers went to 59 Taft Circle on Friday to “check on a party that was not answering the phone.”

Police met Kane’s family at the scene when they found Kane dead in the home. Police say there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and investigation is ongoing.

According to police, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed an autopsy Saturday and the cause of death is pending.

Governor Ned Lamont released a statement on the passing of State Auditor Rob Kane:

“I was saddened tonight to learn of the sudden passing of state auditor and former state senator Rob Kane. My prayers and condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. Rob took pride in his public service on behalf of his constituents, understanding he was their voice in Hartford. He then assumed the role of state auditor, working on behalf of all taxpayers. All public servants should be commended for their work on behalf of our residents, and Rob took his work seriously. He will be missed at the Capitol.”

Connecticut Senate Republican Leader Kevin Kelly released a statement as well:

“Our hearts are filled with grief.  Rob Kane was a champion for the people of Connecticut. As a state senator, he served the people of the 32nd District with skill, style and compassion. Rob loved Connecticut, he loved public service, and he took great pride in helping people in need.  He also loved his family and his children very much. We in the state senate were proud to call him our friend and colleague.  We will miss his smile, his laugh, and his positive presence at the State Capitol. Our thoughts and prayers are with Rob’s family during this incredibly painful time.”

Senator Martin Looney added:

“I’m saddened to learn of the passing of former Senator and State Auditor Rob Kane. He was a conscientious public servant in his near decade-long tenure as a legislator who always advocated for what he believed to be in the interests of his constituents and the state. On behalf of the entire Senate Democratic Caucus, I extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his children and his entire extended family.”

On Saturday State Auditor John Geragosian also released a statement saying:

“On behalf of the Auditors of Public Accounts, we are shocked and saddened by the death of our friend and colleague, Rob Kane.  We offer our condolences to his children, family and friends.  Working with Rob, we came to know how dedicated he was to them.  He told us proudly about his children’s activities and achievements.  He loved his siblings and enjoyed their many holiday and birthday gatherings.

Rob was committed to our state and our office’s efforts to make it work more effectively.  As a bipartisan office, it was critical that Rob and I work together. We collaborated successfully by maintaining communication, trust, respect and compromise. Rob also cherished his service in the Senate and enjoyed his relationships and interactions with the whole legislative community.

He was a Republican and I am a Democrat.  He was a senator and I was a representative. While we did not always agree on everything, we always found a way to reach consensus.  Our offices were separated by a door that always remained open. We became good friends who shared only one common foe: the New York Yankees.

Although our work is very serious, Rob and I shared many laughs. This was partially a result of the biting wit that comes from our growing up in Waterbury and New Britain.

We offer our deepest condolences to Rob’s children, family and many friends.  Our office hopes to work with his loved ones on an event to honor him. We ask all of you to keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
