    Purim Wines

Wine is definitely a drink of choice for many on the purim holiday. It’s smooth, delicious, and comes in so much variety that you can find the right wine for almost anyone’s tastes. Some look for the highest alcohol content wines, which can get up to 18.5-20% with a port style wine. Others look for the lower alcohol or sweeter wines that drink almost like soda. Either way, wine will make an excellent addition to any purim suedah or mishloach manot.

Where Does Drinking on Purim Come From?

The custom of drinking wine on Purim comes from a quote of Rava in the Babylonian Talmud. He said that “One must drink on Purim until that person cannot distinguish between cursing Haman and blessing Mordechai” (Megillah 7b).  Although the consumption of alcohol on purim is not just limited to wine, the Talmud (Sanhedrin 38a) states nichnas yayin, yatza sod, “when wine goes in, secrets come out.” This is hinting not only to one’s inner secrets, but is also interpreted to mean secrets of the Torah.
