HACU statement on President-elect Joe Biden’s nomination of Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of Homeland Security

SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) has released the following statement on the nomination of Alejandro Mayorkas as the next Secretary of Homeland Security. HACU applauds President-elect Joe Biden on selecting The Honorable Alejandro Mayorkas to become the next Secretary of Homeland Security, the first immigrant Hispanic to lead this important agency.

“As Deputy Secretary of DHS under the Obama-Biden administration, Mr. Mayorkas demonstrated extraordinary leadership and executive acumen, as well as unique insights and sensitivity about immigrants and America’s diversity,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “His proven expertise and strong support for policies and programs to advance equitable inclusion of underrepresented populations in the federal workforce will be an asset to President-elect Biden’s commitment to making his Administration and the federal labor force look like the face of America.”

HACU has had a longstanding partnership with the Department of Homeland Security to increase the representation of Latinos and other populations in the ranks of DHS’s professionals and executives, particularly of graduates from Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) through internships and fellowships that tap the best and brightest alumni from the more than 500 HSIs across the nation. Hispanics remain the only underrepresented racial/ethnic demographic in the federal workforce.

“HACU pledges its support to ensure his confirmation by the U.S. Senate when he is formally nominated,” added Flores.
