Welcome to the Downtown Raleigh Scrap Metal Recycling page. It’s a shame to put recyclable metal materials in the trash, so what can you do with metal objects that can’t be put in your recycle bin? Welcome to a grassroots recycling program powered by neighbors.

What are the 2022 Pick-up Dates?

Next one, OCTOBER 26 2022

How do I enroll and get started?

The Scrap Metal Recycling Program is limited to Mordecai Community and Historic Oakwood neighbors. Enrollment is only for new subscribers. Thank you to everyone who participated in 2021. You will continue to receive notifications for pick-up.

Step 1: Complete a short contact form

Step 2:  Purchase a Storage Container or make your own bin/box

Step 3:  Start recycling household metal junk from projects and waste.

What types of metals are accepted?

  • YES - All metal is recycled at 2310 Garner Road. Metal items includes includes electronics, random steel and aluminum pieces left over from home projects. For example, have you recently replaced a ceiling fan? Here is a massive list of accepted metals.
  • BUT - We will not be able to pick up batteries to keep everyone safe. Sorry, no large items like white goods/appliances due to transport limitation. Last, we don't want to accept wood screws and nails to ensure we don't accidentally drop some in the road.

How does my Scrap Metal Recycling Cart get Emptied?

  • There is two pickups a year. (Add the dates to your calendar)
  • You will receive a text message asking you to opt-in for pick-up within a week of a scheduled pick-up
  • Leave the container on your porch or curb by 9 am the day of pickup (Wednesday)
    • Metal items that do not fit in your container, please clearly label them with "Scrap Metal Recycle"

Support

  • Do you need the volunteer to come inside your house to get something heavy?
We can't do that! We are looking for easy pick-up.
  • Did we accidentally skip you and. you opt-in for pick-up?
We are sorry, and this was a mistake. This is a grassroots program powered by neighbors for neighbors, and not a business.  Please let us know we missed you and we will improve for the next scheduled pick-up. Email Feedback to reid at serozi dot com
  • How do I opt-in last minute?
Don't wait till the night before a scheduled pick-up date. We finalize the pick-up list the day before around noon. If you forgot to opt-in, then we look forward to you catching us at the next scheduled pick-up.
  • How much does this costs me?
We are asking for a suggested tip of $3.00 for each household pick-up. Picking up scrap metal costs money. Truck wear and gas. Making money from scrap metal doesn't generate enough funds for the overhead.

History

This program was started after realizing how often I was filling up my own metal recycle cart from home repair projects and broken stuff at the house. In 2019, my family replaced a microwave, attic ladder steps, installed a ceiling fan(s), sink, outdoor toys and tech junk  to name a few items. All these items pile up in my make-shift recycle bin. Next, I would haul the bin to a local metal scrap yard to do my part from keeping trash out of the landfill. I reached out to my community to collect feedback to understand if other neighbors were interested in designing a scrap metal pick-up service. After 72 responses,  Survey - Beyond the Cart Metal Recycling Program.pdf we are now piloting the idea to anyone in Raleigh's Mordecai Community
