Who’s Got Car Seats

Background and Purpose

The following directory, mandated by SB 1073 (Chapter 1223, Statutes of 1991), and SB 503 (Chapter 512, Statutes of 1995), was designed as a first step in complying with Vehicle Code Section 27360 which requires local health departments to provide municipal courts with the listing of all local low-cost car seat programs. As proceeds from fines become available, local health departments are also responsible for preparing and maintaining this listing. In 1997, the “Who’s Got Car Seats?” directory was created to help initiate and maintain this requirement, which includes a listing of child passenger safety education and low-cost purchase or loaner programs in each county. Also included in each county’s listing is the information for the local designated Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Coordinator, if the education program is subcontracted, and if a CPS Violator Education Program is available. The County CPS Coordinator is contacted yearly to update this information. This information is available on the OTS website at www.ots.ca.gov. The intention to have this information available statewide is for use by the courts, hospitals, county programs, community based programs, and the public to be able to access child passenger safety education and installation services throughout California. Contact the County CPS Coordinator for local questions, or the OTS staff for other directory information at (916) 509-3030.
