A few words on Other Voices New York by Philip King
"Other Voices" have always rung out in Greenwich Village. The Village in the sixties was a destination for every musical expeditionary from Bob Dylan to The Clancy Brothers. In 2011, Other Voices took a trip to The Village and fetched up at Le Poisson Rouge on MacDougal Street.
It was an eclectic gathering, directed by Glen Hansard and Thomas Bartlett. A session like no other. On the night we were joined by Laurie Anderson, Colum McCann, Paul Muldoon, Joseph O’Connor, Gabriel Byrne, Caoimhín O’Raghallaigh, Íarla O’Lionáird, Sam Amidon, Martin Hayes and Martha Wainwright.
From that evening, we’ve chosen a piece for you from Joseph O’Connor reading from his wonderful Redemption Falls, leading us into ‘Saro’ sung by Sam Amidon with Thomas Bartlett at the piano.
And then, an emotional and beautiful version of Kate McGarrigle’s ‘Talk to Me of Mendocino’, introduced by her daughter, Martha Wainwright and sung in sweet harmony with Sam Amidon.
