Leigh Centurions have the ‘best player in the country’ at present according to rugby league agent

Leigh Centurions have wowed audiences in recent weeks with their incredible, fast and physical play.

In round two of the Championship, however, it looked like Featherstone Rovers were the favourites for promotion after dismantling the Centurions on their own patch.

Since then, owner Derek Beaumont, head of rugby Chris Chester and head coach Adrian Lam have banged heads together to find the right candidates to take the club forward on the field – and boy have they found them.

Nene MacDonald has been an incredible threat on the edges, Edwin Ipape has been one of the buys of the season through the middle whilst former Australian international Blake Ferguson has taken to Championship rugby like a duck to water.

For rugby league agent, Craig Harrison of Show Me The Money UK, this current Leigh side would be a top-half Super League club with the calibre of players they currently have at their disposal.

“If I was anybody else looking at Leigh’s team, I think Leigh are a top six Super League side at the moment if not higher,” Harrison said on The Full Eighty Minutes podcast.

“That’s a ridiculous comment but I’m watching them thinking, Nene MacDonald – he is a top five player in Super League – the hooker Edwin Ipape he would be a top three player.

“You’ve got back-rowers and then you’ve got a couple of props who would fit into a top five club – you can talk about a 6 ft 4 bloke doing somersaults in the air and taking 15 metres carries off the backline and props are falling off him.”

That player is of course Blake Ferguson who Harrison believes could be the top player in the country at the moment: “The level where he is – he could be the best winger in all the competitions now, so the top player in the country right now is in the Championship!”

With all that being said, however, if Leigh do earn promotion then around half of those overseas players would have to leave given the quota in Super League.
