Prime Minister Keith Rowley hosted a Post-Cabinet Media Briefing at 1:30pm this afternoon (Thursday 22nd July 2021) from Tobago, to update the public on several important issues relating to both Trinidad and Tobago. Below are the key points discussed today, courtesy of TTT Live Online: - Prime Minister Keith Rowley addressed the 6-6 THA impasse following the Election on 25th January 2021. He announced that the Tobago House of Assembly Amendment Act, which was passed in Parliament and assented to on 16th March 2021, will be proclaimed this Monday (26th July 2021), allowing for the dissolution of the Assembly and for fresh elections to be held. He explained that the Proclamation will pave the way for the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) to produce and submit a report to the Minister of Rural Development and Local Government for the creation of fifteen (15) THA Electoral Districts within ninety (90) days. The Minister will then lay before the House of Representatives, for its approval, the draft of an Order by the President for giving effect to the recommendations outlined in the EBC report. P.M Rowley is hopeful that all will go according to schedule so the next THA election can take place by the end of the year. - Prime Minister Rowley again stated that the COVID-19 vaccination process remains voluntary. However, he is concerned that there will be vaccines in-hand if more people do not step up and take advantage of T&T's stock. He made a special call for Tobagonians to get vaccinated, saying, "You don't know when you will be exposed to the virus." - Retail sector/Mall workers are being encouraged to get vaccinated against COVID-19 as their sector is the next target for re-opening. The P.M expressed disappointment that arrangements for the vaccination of teachers were not followed through. He is hoping it is just a temporary setback. - On a question on the re-opening of churches, the Prime Minister said he cannot give an answer on this just yet, since some sectors are still closed. He assured that everything is being done with caution. He reminded that Government is targeting the re-opening of schools in September. - P.M Rowley highlighted a newspaper article today in which three (3) members of a family (grandmother, daughter and granddaughter) succumbed to COVID-19 within days of each other. He said it was "very distressing" to read the article and he extended condolences to the family. If you missed the Press Conference, you can watch it below in its entirety.
