About this ebook

Becoming a goddess wasn’t what I planned for today.

Death made me an offer I couldn't refuse. But I'm in love with the archangel who is his oldest and best friend.

“You have been friends for a millennium,” I said. Perhaps as much as a god and his angel could be friends, I thought. “It would be cosmically stupid for you to allow a woman to ruin such love.”

I held their hands tight as they flinched and tried again to pull away. But they were looking at me now, not each other, which is what I wanted. Focus on me, boys, I thought to myself, selecting my next words carefully.

The stone floor was hard and cool against my knees as I knelt between them. I brought both of their hands to my lips. “I choose you,” I said again, loud enough to fill the dark room. I looked from one to another and asked, “Will you both choose me?”

Confusion and ancient possessiveness settled across their faces at war with hope and a new consideration. The juxtaposition might have been comical had my heart not hung in the balance.

Ravens mate for life. And death.

About the author

If you want to read the sexy bio written by my marketing team, you can find it on my website: davereed.me/about/

This is not that. This is deeper. This is why I write.

In our confused modern, global culture, we have some deep-seated Puritanical (and other traditions) roots of our evil. Don't get me wrong, it's not just politically warped monotheistic mythologies to blame. Even our purportedly secular global culture likes to pretend the essence of humanity is good and kind and bright. It's not.

My purpose is to remind us of what marketing and politics prefer we forget: we are two-souled creatures. We are light. We are shadow. We are both which makes us more. To be our best selves, we must embrace our duality. We are both wave and particle.

In my opinion, not only is utopia not possible in our Universe of scarcity, but it would also be stagnant and terminally boring. There's no story without conflict and stakes and risk and pain—and growth. That's all monster territory, all shadow.

The way humans make sense of the Universe is through story. It's so fundamental to our nature, we don't even notice it. I believe it's in our DNA. Since the Toba Event, we have evolved to be Homo narrans. We can't even think without using story.

In my philosophy, better stories make better people.

To that end, I don't write the heroes you want.

I make the monsters you need.
