Leader of the Jamaat-al-Muslimeen, Imam Yasin Abu Bakr, died at the St. James Infirmary shortly after 9pm on Thursday night (21st October 2021). Bakr, who led an attempted coup d’état in Trinidad and Tobago in 1990, celebrated his 80th birthday only a few days ago, on Tuesday 19th October 2021. He died on the one-year anniversary of his wife’s death. According to reports, Bakr collapsed at his home and was rushed to the medical facility where he died, despite efforts by medical personnel to resuscitate him. His cause of death is unclear at this time. Bakr’s son, Fuad Abu Bakr, wrote on Facebook at 9:42 pm, “To Allah we belong and to him is our eventual return. ALLAHU AKBAR.” Back in 1990, Bakr's “army”, comprising of 100 heavily-armed followers, stormed the Red House, taking Prime Minister A.N.R. Robinson and others hostage and declaring the Government was overthrown. He surrendered six (6) days later after being offered amnesty, and spent two (2) years in jail. In September 2021, Bakr issued a warning to the current Government and all arms of the State to stop “oppressing” citizens of this country. He went live on the Jamaat’s Facebook Page and spoke for over an hour, highlighting issues he viewed as “oppression” to people of Afro-Trinidadian descent. “I warning the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, I (am) warning the Police, I warning the Coast Guard, I warning everybody who is involved in the repression, the oppression of African people, I warning you today, this is your last day warning. Because it is coming on you,” he said. This is a developing story - refresh this page for updates.
