This is a story that I drew for the Aikawa&Risu all-shipping anthology 【Partners at the End of the World】 in May 2021. I did some retouch for web release, additional commentary, and translation.

...그러더니, 그 녀석 갑자기 '십자눈이 되겠다'고 뛰쳐나간 거야. / 마법을 못 쓰는 자기를 써 줄 곳은 거기 뿐이라면서. / 근데 그게 몇 년 있다가 검은 가루랑 돈을 들고 돌아왔더라니까! / 마법까지 쓸 수 있게 돼가지고는...

나중에 들어보니까, 연기관이 기형으로 태어나서 그랬더랜다.
아― 그런 경우 있지... 나는 어떠려나...
지금은 가끔 들러서 선물도 놓고 가고, 좋은 녀석이야.
그건 미담이네요. / 하지만 십자눈이라고 다 좋은 놈들 뿐인 건 아니니까... 누구나 태워주는 건 위험한데요.

꽤 보편적인 스토리였다고 생각합니다. 자기불신과 자기증명을 동시에 안고 휘청거리는 누군가의 이야기. 이것은 리스의 이야기이고, 아이카와의 이야기이고, 어느 촌구석을 뛰쳐나간 누군가의 이야기이고, 또 우리의 이야기일 거에요.
나는 가치있는 사람인가? 사회에게, 가족에게, 친구들에게 있어서? 너에게 있어서도?
나는 충분한 사람인가? 자신에게 부끄럽지 않을 만큼?
나는 온전한 사람인가? 사랑하고 사랑받을 수 있을 만큼?
나는 준비된 사람인가? 삶의 행복을 유지할 수 있을 만큼?
우리는 평생에 걸쳐 확실한 답을 찾으려고 하지만, 그런 게 있을 리 없죠. 우리의 존재에 견고함이 부재한다는 건 괴로운 일입니다. 그래서 우리는 대신 스스로가 만들어낸 연약한 믿음으로나마 만족하는 법을 배워야 하는 거겠죠. 그 믿음의 결과가 좋든, 나쁘든.
소재도 스토리도 리스의 시선으로 진행시킨 원고지만, '여행'이라는 틀은 아이카와를 위한 장치였습니다. 리스가 아이카와에게 자기 방을 공유해준 것처럼, 아이카와도 자신의 공간에 리스를 허락하고 싶었을 거에요. 하지만 사실 '아이카와만의 공간'이라는 건 어디에도 없죠. 그래서 아이카와는 바다로 가기로 합니다. 21권 143화에 나온 그곳으로.
( 제가 그린 컷은 원작의 박력에는 전혀 미치지 못하지만... )
자기가 원했던 '아름다운 세계'가 있는 곳. 그리고 이제 그곳에 리스가 추가되었죠. 네, 그것만으로도 아이카와가 바랄 수 있는 모든것이고 말고요. 그냥 이대로, 마법을 못 쓰니 사냥당할 걱정도 없는 너와 함께, 이 행복한 순간을 마냥 이어갈 수 있을 거라는 연약하고 순수한 믿음.
하지만 리스는 마법사이자 파트너로서 자신의 존재 의의에 대한 답을 찾고 싶었어요. 자신에게 가치가 있다는 증거를 원했죠. 그래서 리스는 아이카와가 겉으로 보이는 것 만큼 견고한 존재가 아니라는 걸 눈치채지 못합니다. ...정작 리스가 그 증거를 제일 먼저 보여주고 싶었던 사람은 바로 아이카와였는데.
슬프죠, 이 둘이 똑같은 정서적 뿌리를 공유하면서도 그걸 깨닫지 못했다는 게.

He still drops by with presents sometimes.
That's a heartwarming story. / But I have to say, the cross-eyes isn't made up of good guys only... It's dangerous to give anyone a ride.

I think this story has quite universal sentiment. Story of someone struggling with self-doubt and desire to prove themselves. It's story of Risu, of Aikawa, of a man who stormed out of country town, and of us.
Am I good enough? For society, for family, for friends? For you?
Am I good enough for myself?
Am I good enough to love and be loved?
Am I good enough to last the happiness I wanted in my life?
We try to find a solid answer through lifetime, and there's no such thing. It's painful, the absence of solidness in our existence. So we can't help but learn to be content with fragile belief made by ourselves. Whether the result of that belief is good or bad.
I chose the theme for Risu, but the frame― 'a trip' was for Aikawa. Just like Risu shared his room with Aikawa, I thought he would've wanted to allow Risu in his place. But he had nowhere to call 'his own space', not really. That's why he took Risu to the beach. The spot from the episode 143, volume 21.

His ideal place of 'beautiful world' was there. And now Risu is in there, too. Of course that's all Aikawa can ever want. A fragile and naive belief― That he can last this happiness with Risu, who can't use magic and therefore can't be hunted.
But Risu wanted to find an answer if his existence has any significance as a magic-user and as a partner. He wanted to prove himself. He wanted the evidence. So he counldn't see that Aikawa was not a man of solidness as he pretends. ...And it was Aikawa who Risu wanted to show the evidence first.
It's a tragedy that they shared the same psychological root and never realized it.
