Immigration measures and support for Ukrainians and their families

The deadline for many of the temporary residence immigration measures for Ukrainians and their family members was March 31, 2024. This was the last day to

  • enter Canada to benefit from the CUAET measures
  • apply for temporary residence in Canada under special immigration measures for Ukrainians and their family members

However, depending on your situation, some temporary measures may still be available.

Your CUAET application was approved on or after February 4, 2024

You haven’t arrived in Canada yet

Given the time it takes to get approved and get ready to travel to Canada, some applicants may not have had enough time to arrive in Canada before the March 31, 2024, deadline.

If your application under the CUAET measures was approved on or after February 4, 2024, you can travel to Canada using your approved temporary resident visa and be authorized to enter Canada under the CUAET measures.

If you were also approved for an open work permit, you will get one when you arrive in Canada.

CUAET approval letter

We’ll send you a CUAET approval letter that confirms your application was approved under the CUAET measures.

Bring this letter with you to Canada and show it to the Government of Canada officer at the Canadian port of entry.

This letter confirms to the officer that you’re eligible to benefit from many of the CUAET measures, including

  • an extended temporary stay of up to 3 years in Canada
  • access to fee-exempt study permits and open work permits

To apply for a permit, you can either

  • tell the officer at the port of entry or
  • apply from within Canada

Financial assistance

If you arrived in Canada on or before March 31, 2024, you can apply for the one-time financial assistance benefit until June 30, 2024.

You haven’t gotten a decision on your CUAET application yet

If you applied under the CUAET measures on or before July 15, 2023, and you haven’t gotten a decision yet (an approval or a rejection), it may be due to the complexity of the application.

We’re still working on processing it as soon as possible.

If your application is approved

We’ll send you a CUAET approval letter that confirms that your application was approved under the CUAET measures.

Bring this letter with you to Canada and show it to the Government of Canada officer at the Canadian port of entry.

You can continue to stay in Canada until the expiry date on your temporary resident document.

If you want to apply to extend your stay, work permit, or study permit, you must apply through the regular process and you’ll have to pay standard processing fees.

Applications in progress

We’ll continue to process your application under the requirements of the temporary measures if it was submitted on or before March 31, 2024.

This includes applications to

  • extend your stay in Canada
  • get or extend a work permit
  • get or extend a study permit

If you applied after March 31, 2024, it will be processed under the regular program requirements and you’ll have to pay standard processing fees.

You can continue to stay in Canada until the expiry date on your temporary resident document.

If you want to apply to extend your stay, work permit or study permit, you must apply through the regular process and you’ll have to pay standard processing fees.

You can still travel to Canada using your approved temporary resident visa (TRV) until it expires.

If you were also approved for an open work permit, you will get one when you arrive in Canada, as long as it has not expired.

  • in Canada, and
  • the family member of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
