Holt Hockey #1

Famous Last Words

Rate this book
Harlow Hayes loves water. In its liquid form.

The chlorinated kind she swims in. The perennial droplets soaking her adopted hometown. The waves she ventures out on to observe the ocean.

Water in its frozen state holds no appeal to her. That’s not the only—or most divisive—difference between her and Conor Hart. The arrogant, arresting captain of Holt University’s hockey team spends every second not picking fights or partying atop a sheet of it.

Plenty of girls fall for the charming lines and that cocky smirk. Harlow knows better. Knows more.

The fuel for the fury that makes him such a dominant force on the ice. The reason he ignores her as resolutely as she pretends he doesn’t exist. The history they share but didn’t write.

Knowledge meant to ensure he’s the one guy she could never—would never—like, much less love.

Famous last words.

This book was okay to good.
I actually really liked the main characters of this story and their backgrounds but I feel like we needed a bit more on Harlow especially.
I also would have loved some flashback scenes in here but overall this is a nice hockey romance story with a focus on family.

I just liked it!

I loved both MCs personalities 🥺
Their enemies stage was realistic ♥️
Their get together wasn’t the cutest but… good enough for me 💅🏻
And I loved both their passions 🐋

So.. I’m easy to please, just give me sports and I’m good.

I could tell early on this would be a good book. I was hoping it would stay that way. It did.

I loved the timing of information given. I love the two MCs. I loved the clever writing that flowed well.

It is an enemies to lovers romance.

The H is a college ice hockey player. He’s very good. He turned down a full ride at a Div 1 school and is attending a Div 3 college instead.

The h is someone the H knows of and avoids at all costs. They have been attending the same college for the last 4 years. The h also avoids the H. There is a messy connection between the two, even though they’ve never met.

When they finally meet, the H is brusque but on reflection he reaches out and extends an offer to help her. Their relationship grows from there. It stays hesitant and tentative but the author does show us the deeper growth than what they are showing on the surface.

The messiness is still there and does contribute to issues.

It does have a HEA

Highly recommend!

Happy ‘cause I enjoyed a college sport romance after so long and hadn’t rolled my eyes once, yay!!!

It was close to a five-star read, but it took me a bit to get fully invested in story add to that the fact that the main characters took some time apart at the end of the book to 'work things one-on-one', but I won’t label it as a third act breakup and it wasn’t really a negative point in the story, because it benefited both of them at the end.

Warning spoiler

Proclaiming this as a book version of One Tree Hill is undoubtedly considered spoilers in this case.
Because I was intrigued in the " Why these two are so prone on hating and ignoring each other though they’ve never spoke to one another.." and I was hooked from the moment I knew.

I enjoyed the conversations between the two protagonists, how they confided, how they talked about their interests.
I genuinely laughed at some of their jokes they had a sort of camaraderie at the beginning of their story that was truly refreshing. The fact that they always sincerely apologized when it was necessary and never let their egos interfere was a huge plus to the book.

I liked the fact that the male mc didn’t sort all his family drama with his dad and his family out of the blue at the end of the book just to provide a 'satisfying ending'.

Awwww I love NA college romances, even more so if they are sports romances.

Famous Last Words had everything I love about this genre.

✔ College angst
✔ Enemies to lovers vibes
✔ Witty dialogues
✔ A sassy heroine and a moody hero.

The backstory between the main characters delivered the perfect amount of depth. And the secondary characters are worthy of their own stories.

I was very pleased with this novel, so pleased that I'm looking into the author's backlist and looking forward to her new releases.

“I told myself I’d never, ever fall in love with Conor Hart. Famous last words.”

This couple was so well-matched! They were truly equals. I loved how the girl was not influenced by anyone and not afraid of taking the action/initiative! Yeah, all who love strong, decisive heroines, this book is for you!

MC always had a rather open dialogue and solved all problems as they raised, which I also really appreciated! I wouldn’t even call an occurring conflict - a conflict - it was more just a break to make up their minds.

Missing something vital...

I just don't know what. It wasn't badly written, the characters were actually likeable - even the heroine - and the plot wasn't the worst I've read by a long shot.
The problem was that it was lacklustre and just, well...boring.
I was bored. The H was broody for about 5 minutes and the h hated him for about that long. Then in a blink they were running pals and then friends with benefits.
But there was no passion there. No soul. No conflict, no reward.
When the requisite 3rd act breakup inevitably happened, it was like they didn't give a shit. They didn't fight with one another or for their relationship. I never felt like the h was heartbroken or even missed him. She just cracked on, business as usual - for months. No tears, no sadness, nothing.

Not a satisfying read at all, really.

This was a really good sports romance. I really liked the build up of the relationship between Conor and Harlow and their reluctance to get to know one another added a lot of tension. Their relationship was developed really well and I think the banter and chemistry they had was great.
I felt like there were too many side characters introduced in the story that took away from more moments that Conor and Harlow could have shared. I didn’t really care about storylines with friends of roommates or girlfriends of half-brothers. It pulled me away from the main focus of the book.
Otherwise I liked this one and it was a fast and easy read. It was nice that hockey was actually a main topic in the book and that we got to follow the team throughout the season. This was my first book from this author but I’ll probably be checking out more! It was a good palate cleanser book.

How in the world did I like it THIS much? 4,5 stars

Hold your horses, cause it's still a college sports romance, but the EXECUTION! The main characters are nor really enemies at first, more like they dislike each other very much. The reason behind their conflict seemed to me quite realistic and not OTT stupid, like it can be the case in other books.

The best part about this book for me was the gradual development of their relationship: they started out as people who don't like each other and have preconceived notions about one another, then start getting to know each other and become friendly acquaintances, then friends, then friends with benefits (it was more of a not proclaimed romantic relationship, they were just chicken about talking about it), then break-up due to life's circumstances, then romantic partners at the end. The way it was depicted was very life-like, despite finding each other attractive, there were no "throbbing pussies and iron dicks" in the midst of every regular conversation.

The third-act break up was unnecessary tbh, especially the way it was randomly executed. After that I couldn't get in the zone as much as before, so the enjoyment kind of went down. And the way they got back together...a bit underwhelming, simply because, once again, it looked like a real life situation.

The epilogue takes place approximately 6 months later and we get a HFN ending.

Sports-related hockey romance (enemies-to-lovers) between two college seniors. I think this is the last of my 2021 Kindle Unlimited sports romances. Time to advance to 2022 and the long list I've already accumulated.

Hockey player/science nerd and I really liked them both. It was a fast read, fun and funny, too. Of course, the path to love isn't always easy, so you'll slide across the ice into some angst. Although you'll find a satisfactory ending, it's just not the kind you'll remember or ooh and aah over!

4.5⭐️A fun college hockey romance perfect for all Elle Kennedy fans. I loved the progression of the MCs relationship and their heart, humor and banter. The audiobook was well done with great dual narration.

What to expect:
-Sports romance
-College setting
-Best friend’s enemy
-Forbidden love
-Friends with benefits situation
-Great side characters

STEAMY and SMART, FAMOUS LAST WORDS is utterly romantic in the best way possible! I enjoyed this and you should definitely check out this book. Harlow Hayes loves water and to swim in chlorine water. That’s when Conor Hart gets in her way. A arrogant captain of Holt’s University’s hockey team who spends every second not picking fights or partying. Plenty of girls for him, but Harlow knows better. The fuel for the fury that makes him such a dominant force on the ice. The reason he ignores her as resolutely as she pretends he doesn’t exist. The history they share but didn’t write, but he’s the one guy she could never love. A sexy enemies-to-lovers college romance you need to add to your TBR!

Honestly can't say it was bad, which was surprisingly refreshing. Out of the many hockey romances that I've read lately, this was by far the best. This is not to say that Famous Last Words is anything otherworldly but it was cute, fun, and a fast read. Not terrible. And that's an endorsement on my part.

Famous Last Words de C.W. Farnsworth

Argumento:

Famous Last Words is C.W. Farnsworth’s seventh book, and dare I say her best.

FLW follows Conor Hart, a star college hockey player, and Harlow Hayes, a swimmer that loves the water and everything it offers. This book gives us an addicting hate-to-love trope, uniquely written in the way that C.W. always brings to the table. I always find C.W.’s books to be a breath of fresh air – a new spin on some of the most common tropes. The way she writes her stories are unique, creative, and exciting. She always brings something new with each book release and it’s one reason why I love reading her work. Conor and Harlow hate each other, and are torn between their families. They’re both extremely loyal to the people they love, making it even harder for them to love (or should I say like lol) each other.

The chemistry between Conor and Harlow was off the charts. The push and pull between these two was addicting, and I just wanted them to get their shit together and LOVE EACH OTHER! I loved the friend groups in this book, and I really loved Conor’s relationship with his mom :,) we love a momma’s boy. I also really appreciated the epilogue in this book! It brought the biggest smile to my face and I was so happy that Conor and Harlow got their happy ending.

I can’t wait for Famous Last Words to release, and feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to read it early. C.W.’s writing is improving (it was already great!) with each release and it’s been amazing to watch her grow.

Thank you to Grey’s Promotions for providing me with an ARC copy of Famous Last Words for review.

This book was amazing! It was exactly what I needed :) C.J Farnsworth is on my list of auto-read authors and I've loved everything I've read so far. The thing I love most is that all her books are unique and she's not recycling material. Everything is discernably her own style.

This book in particular pulled all my heartstrings. It didn't try to be something it wasn't. The characters were complex but so easy to fall in love with. I'm very glad to have read this and look forward to reading more by Farnsworth.

Hear me out: there was a little bit too much hockey talk in this for my liking 😍 but besides that and the third act break up.. *chefs kiss*! Brought to you by my weakness for the star hockey player on the team in any hockey romance book series and a dramatic airport reuniting scene

“I told myself I’d never, ever fall in love with Conor Hart. Famous last words.”

This was such an unexpected and seriously sweet and spicy read!! The plot was genuinely intriguing and I loved the sort of enemies to lovers aspect that I hadn’t really read in other sports romances before. I loved Harlow and Conor’s characters and loved the progression of their reluctant friendship/relationship. With most sports romances, this book comes along with a handful of some really fun side characters that make the book have that added found family aspect.

I was kind of hesitant with how fast Harlow and Conor initially started to get more intimate but it actually worked really well and the story didn’t drag the way I thought it would. I loved the way their FWB turned into what it did and loved the development both characters had. Although there is a 3rd act break up, it didn’t bother me much bc I think as a reader you saw it coming and it felt like an honest reaction. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I’m excited for Aidan’s book soon!

Reread- Jan 2024 // 5✨

You guys !! I’m so happy that I reread this for fun prior to aidens story. I read this back in summer of 22, so I figured I’d listen to the audio/read along the ebook for fun.

Ummmm it’s TOTALLY different. So I reached out to Charlotte and she said that the current version is the second edition with different scenes, and it was like a whole new book for me. I originally rated it 4stars but I loved this version so much better 😭🥹🥰

I love Conor hart forever & always 🫶🏼

✨4.5 STARS ✨
I love the writing style of this book. It was fun, smart, emotional and sexy.
It was perfectly understated in the best ways. It’s a first read by this author for me. It won’t be my last.
Harlow and Conor are fiery and full of life characters.
There’s humor, great banter, real college angst and deep human emotions. (The angst is true to life, not overplayed at all.)
Sports/college romance has a few styles, I like all. This one was really refreshing! No over the top drama, no drawn out misunderstandings, no black and white characterizations.
I really liked the characters, I felt like I understood them. I also felt like they were both thoughtful even when they made missteps.
I loved them together. I felt so much empathy for them. I love their interactions and their chemistry was hot and emotional at times.
I didn’t feel like unnecessary scenes or secondary characters were written. Everything has a reason.
Both characters are intertwined in a really interesting way, it played out naturally and in such a mature and moving way.
Both characters have depth, humor and heart.
I really enjoyed the flow of their story and where the journey took them.
It’s a full story with growth, that was a very important aspect to this book for me.
The secondary characters are very important to the story, yet they don’t overshadow or get excessive scenes. I understood them, their motives without needing a lot of details. I think that’s a testament to the writers skill.
Conor and Harlow are really sympathetic, lovable and enjoyable characters.
Their story was a pleasure to read and put warmth in heart and a smile on my face. I loved this book!

Going into this book, I wanted a tension filled, high angst book, but I think this just fell short of being that. There were moments that had my heart and the chemistry was there between Conor and Harlow. But there was something missing for me. It was at the cusp of being what I needed but I just didn’t get it at the end. I think the intensity of the story didn’t match the deliverance, especially with the ending. I expected more drama from the plot and more tension. But overall this was a cute read and I think those looking for a fast pace, easy read where the romance is front and center this is a perfect book.
