At Shoreline Community College, the Engineering and Computer Science programs work closely to prepare students for successful transfer to universities nation-wide in pursuit of a variety of technical degrees. The successful candidate will join energetic department faculty to create and expand opportunities for direct-to-workforce students. The department offers high engagement courses where students create relationships with their instructors to facilitate individualized support when needed. The department strives to equip students with strong technical knowledge coupled with team-oriented soft skills that are necessary to be successful in industry. All department courses also include opportunities to work hands-on with computers in computer lab spaces.

This position is suited for someone who is interested in the applications of computing. The position will support students in the development of professional, technical skills which will allow the students to gain employment outside of the theoretical Computer Science pathway. Shoreline currently has a transfer-focused Computer Science program and is seeking to create and build an Applied Computing program.

Essential Duties:
  • Create, collaborate with, and/or support courses, programs, degrees, and certifications which integrate and apply computing skills in a variety of disciplines, such as Business Intelligence and Data Analytics, Visual Communication Technology, Health Informatics/Information Management, and Music Technology
  • Potentially teach introductory Computer Science courses, but primarily focus on the development and growth of new computing elective courses, modular units, or lessons which support a variety of disciplines
  • Develop or guide the development of course outcomes, creation of syllabi, and selection of course resources for any new courses
  • Prepare and teach a variety of coursework in face-to-face lab-based and/or online delivery formats, creating engaging teaching and learning environments that facilitate student success
  • Utilize a variety of assessment activities to measure student learning and achievement of course outcomes
  • Design coursework and pathways which incorporate and promote educational and economic justice, particularly for students who have been historically marginalized or minoritized
In addition to teaching, this position involves advising students, developing programs and curricula based on current technology and employment opportunities, research and theory in teaching areas, and performing related division/department and campus-wide professional responsibilities.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Data Analytics, or related discipline from an accredited institution OR Bachelor’s degree in any discipline AND two (2) years or more of industry experience applying computing skills
  • One (1) year of formal teaching, mentoring, or training experience
  • Experience working across organizational units, structures, or groups to achieve a common goal
  • Experience supporting students or populations who have been historically marginalized, minoritized, and/or educationally or economically disadvantaged
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Coding fundamentals in multiple languages such as Python, Java, C#, JavaScript, and/orR
  • Skill, or interest in developing skill, in a wide range of applied computing areas, such as computational science, music technology, data analytics, web development, visual media, and/or game design
  • Technology industry culture, norms, and practices
SKILL IN:
  • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness
  • Imparting excitement and enthusiasm into the instruction of applied computing
  • Experience with or willingness to gain experience with teaching and developing coursework online
  • Contributing to equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and competence
  • Effective oral/written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College
  • Adapting to a variety of teaching situations with students from diverse backgrounds/abilities

Conditions of Employment

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:  
The College is currently in predominantly remote operations, with assignments completed in a fully online environment during this time.  Instructors will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. When the College returns to on-campus operations, work is usually performed in a classroom/office space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. This position requires the ability to physically attend meetings both on and off campus, and the ability to communicate in person or through appropriate means. Ability to work weekends and evenings when appropriate or needed is required. Instructors typically use computers and media equipment in the work environment.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:
This is a full-time, tenure track position, with a 172-day annual contract beginning September 23, 2021. Salary placement determined by the number of qualifying years of teaching/work experience combined with educational preparation. Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
