The Many Saints Of Newark had a scene featuring Edie Falco as Carmela Soprano that was deleted. The movie, which serves as a prequel to The Sopranos, will explore the 1967 Newark riots, featuring the reign of the DiMeo crime family and the rise of Tony Soprano as he is led by his gangster uncle Dickie MoltisantiThe Many Saints Of Newark is written by Lawrence Konner and The Sopranos creator David Chase, directed by Alan Taylor, and features James Gandolfini's son, Michael, in his late father's role. It also stars Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, Michela De Rossi, John Magaro, Ray Liotta, and Vera Farmiga.

The Sopranos ran for six seasons from 1999, and revolved around Tony Soprano as a ruthless and depressed crime boss attending therapy with Falco portraying his wife Carmela. It is widely regarded as one of the best television series in history due to the complexity of its immoral characters, winning multiple awards for stars Gandolfini, Edie Falco, and the show itself for Chase. The series continues to be discovered by newer audiences and remains one of the most talked-about shows, namely because of the speculative Sopranos series finale in 2007.

Per EW, it has been revealed by Taylor in an interview with NME that The Many Saints Of Newark shot a scene that had Falco reprising her role as Carmela but was ultimately not in the final cut. Falco came in the early production of filming and was merely a way to begin the movie at that time. Taylor went on to explain below:

"We had Edie come in and she dressed up as Carmela, and we shot something with her and it wound up not being in the final movie, but it was a great excuse to see her again. There was some confusion as to how best launch the movie. How to start the movie. So we tried a few things, and that was one of them. If you've seen the movie, you'll see that we begin it in a very different way now, but that wasn't always the idea."

When making a film, especially one that has significant precendence to it, it is pivotal to plan the best opening scene creatively to set the stage and premise for the rest of the movie and to not lose the audience. Of course during production, many things can change in how to structure the story. So while it is unfortunate that fans will not see Carmela Soprano, the prequel is in good hands from the original people who made the show so it can be assured that they know what is best.

As part of its release in theaters, The Many Saints Of Newark will also simultaneously stream on HBO Max for 31 days so viewers will also have a chance to watch it at home. The movie shines a light on the legacy for The Sopranos and the lasting impact it has had on audiences and storytellers. There are many unknowns about the history of the crime life that influenced Tony Soprano, and it will be interesting to see what his boyhood was like. Chase has also considered making a sequel to the film so it is possible that Falco or other cast members of The Sopranos could pop up in that. The Many Saints Of Newark is set to premiere October 1.
