Toyota Avalon 2022.

Toyota will discontinue its older sedan in 2022.

Toyota Motor will drop its largest sedan, the Avalon, from the assembly line in 2022.

And it will do it not to prepare for production of the new generation: Avalon will become history and won’t have a successor.

As Automotive News learned, the North American Toyota has already sent out an information letter to suppliers of components, which confirmed the cessation of production of the Avalon after 2022 model year (recall, in the United States the model year begins at the end of summer, that is, from July-August 2021 is already 2022).

The fifth-generation Toyota Avalon sedan debuted relatively recently in 2018.

Since it has only been in production for three years, it is being taken off early: previous Avalons have averaged six to eight years each.

The Avalon is Toyota’s largest sedan. Since the first generation, it has been built on a front-wheel-drive platform.

The model is somewhat larger than the Camry (modern length is 4,980 mm), but shares the platform and powertrains with it.

Note that the segment of large front-wheel drive sedans has already had its day in almost the entire world, even in the U.S., which was the main market for it.

Previously, such models as the Ford Taurus, Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala and Hyundai Azera were cancelled.

Demand for cars of this format has been falling all last decade. The Avalon sold 27,767 units in the U.S. in 2019 and only 18,421 in 2020.

Sales of the flagship sedan of the new generation will start in the United States.

Let’s remind, Toyota Avalon of the fifth generation debuted in January of the current year within the limits of the Detroit Motor Show.

It is built on the TNGA architecture, on the basis of which Camry, Prius and C-HR models are also built.

«The four-door is longer and wider, but lower, and has a longer wheelbase. The Avalon’s exterior is in the style of the younger Camry.

During the premiere, the manufacturer did not announce engine output of the new model.

A 3,5-liter V-shaped «six» 2GR-FKS has 301 hp and 362 Nm of torque, and also Toyota Hybrid System II, including gasoline 2,5-liter «four» Dynamic Force, 650-volt electric motor, accumulator unit under back seats and a variator.

The hybrid system produces 215 hp, 15 hp more than the previous generation model.

The Avalon’s equipment list includes ten airbags, an infotainment system with a 9-inch touchscreen, projection display, climate control, wireless charging and a premium 1,200-watt JBL 7.1 audio system with surround sound technology and 14 speakers.

The flagship sedan in the U.S. market shows peak sales after the generation change.

For example, in 2013, 70,990 such cars were sold in the U.S., in 2016 already 48,079 units, and sales volume in 2017 was 32,583 units.

For comparison, the younger Toyota Camry had sales of 387,081 units last year and 388,616 units in 2016.
