To some, Dot-Marie Jones may be best known for her role as Coach Sheldon Beiste in the TV musical dramedy Glee, but Jones is also a former athlete. She competed in collegiate-level softball, powerlifting and shot put, in which she placed sixth in the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Jones is currently starring in Bros, a romantic comedy that debuted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. Bros, which is written by Nicholas Stoller and Billy Eichner, featured an entirely LGBTQ principal cast, who are all entirely hilarious.

Working with that funny cast was Jones’ favourite thing about filming the movie. “We’d say the dialogue but also improvise quite a bit and it was hilarious,” said Jones. Postmedia connected with Jones to find out a little bit more about her experience with Bros but also to learn a little about her favourite things.

Folgers on drip and lipstick for the road,
Books that thrill and a clean 416 area code.
Frizz-free curls that have a perfect spring,
These are a few of Dot-Marie Jones’ favourite things.

Q: What is one thing you want viewers to take away from the film?

A: Everybody deserves love and relationship and it shouldn’t matter if you’re straight or part of the LGBTQIA community. Everybody has a place and it’s not up to anybody else to accept you or not.

Q: Favourite type of coffee?

A: I just like regular drip Folgers coffee. I grew up in an environment with Folgers always brewing, so it’s equally nostalgia and taste. I could do a little coffee pod in a pinch but I like drip because you can make five cups at once. And I always drink out of a great big coffee cup.

Q: What item don’t you leave your home without?

A: Lipstick

Q: Favourite book?

A: Hannibal is my absolute favourite.

Q: Favourite (curly) hair product?

I love the product I use (Cantu Avocado Curl Activator); it’s for people with really curly hair. It has Shea butter and avocado oil in it. I wash my hair at night, put the product in and then just let it dry overnight. In the morning, the curls are more defined and not frizzy.

Q: Favourite Canadian thing?

Toronto is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen. It’s so clean.

Q: Anything else you’d like to share with the Postmedia audience?

A: I hope people go see Bros. And I hope they enjoy it and the messages that are in it.
