Leather Grades

Full-Grain Leather
“Full grain” refers to a hide that has not been sanded or buffed. The hide retains the animal’s natural markings, lending an organic look to the finished piece. Because no outer layers have been removed, full-grain leather is the strongest and most durable choice.
Top-Grain Leather
Also known as “corrected leather,” top-grain leather has been buffed and sanded to create a uniform surface and better absorb dyes. Top-grain leather is ideal for those who prefer a more polished appearance.

Leather Characteristics

Natural Variations
Leather furniture is truly one-of-a-kind. No two hides are alike, so expect visible “imperfections” such as wrinkles and grain patterns. These are the marks of high-quality, genuine leather.
Color
All of our leathers are aniline, meaning they're dyed using premium pigments that fully penetrate the hide. The natural texture of leather affects how it absorbs dye, and hues may vary even within the same hide. This is an expected (and desired) effect.
Patina
Our leathers are designed to improve with age. Like your favorite leather jacket, they will soften and develop a beautiful patina over the years.
Relaxing
As a natural material, leather stretches and relaxes with use. Wrinkling and pooling is normal, and is not a sign of a defect or construction flaw.
Scratches
Leather furniture is among the most durable. However, the organic nature of the surface can lead to scratching. Most scratches are easily treated with leather conditioner, and will disappear as the hide ages.
Seaming
Leather furniture has more seams than fabric upholstery. Hides have a limited width, and we’re conscious of efficiently using this natural resource.
