ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. – San Diego State's Joe Tyler (Corby, England) and Johannes Seeman (Pärnu, Estonia) each recorded a victory in singles competition on Friday to lead select Aztec men's tennis players during the opening rounds of the Jack Kramer Collegiate Invitational on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County.

Tyler began the day with a three-set triumph over UC Santa Barbara's Stefano Tsorotiotis, overcoming an early deficit to defeat his Gaucho adversary, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Seeman was a winner in straight sets over USC's Paul Barretto by a 6-2, 6-3 count.

However, the SDSU teammates were not as fortunate in the round of 16, where they were dealt a pair of defeats by seeded Oregon opponents. Seeman dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to second-seeded Joshua Charlton, while Tyler fell short in another tight battle against No. 1 seed Quinn Vandecasteele, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(2).

The Aztecs' other competitor at the tournament, Victor Castro (Novo Hamburgo, Brazil), gave Pepperdine's third-seeded Linus Carlsson Halldin all he could handle in their round of 32 match before succumbing in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Later in the afternoon, Castro and Tyler joined forces in doubles but were edged in their opening-round match by UCLA's Max Wild and Jeffery Fradkin, 8-6.
The Jack Kramer Collegiate Invitational continues Saturday and Sunday.
