The effect of rinsing with hydrogen peroxide

Rinsing with hydrogen peroxide

Exactly one year ago, Corona hit the global dental sector hard. Now most practices are open again and patients more and more patients get the needed treatment. Much has been published recently about the effectiveness of rinsing with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. In this article, we explain how you can contribute to preventing further spread of the virus in your practice.

PREVENTION OF spreading

The March 2020 article “Infection Prevention in Oral Care During the SARS-CoV-2” outbreak in the Dutch Journal of Dentistry referred to recent studies to rinse the mouth with hydrogen peroxide. After all, the main host of COVID-19 is located in the oral mucosa. This makes the mouth a direct risk and it is important to clean it properly.

RINSE WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

The Coronavirus is a so-called “enveloped virus”. The protein coat containing the genetic virus is protected by a fat membrane. Hydrogen peroxide is able to break through this fat layer quickly. The literature has shown that rinsing with a solution of 1% to 2% hydrogen peroxide for 30 to 60 seconds reduces the number of microorganisms. This in turn helps to reduce the number of microorganisms that could escape through aerosols, splashes or direct contact and thereby reduce the risk of virus spreading.

DEVELOPMENT OF CAVEX ORAL PRE RINSE

Based on scientific insights into the effectiveness of pre-procedural mouthwashes and information from the dental world, Cavex immediately started developing an optimal pre-procedural mouthwash. As a Dutch manufacturer of whitening materials based on hydrogen peroxide and a unique mouthwash against halitosis (Fresh4Sure), Cavex has knowledge of both the application of hydrogen peroxide and the production of a mouthwash. This led to the development of Cavex Oral Pre Rinse. A pre-procedural product that combines the antiviral action of hydrogen peroxide with the antiseptic power of mouthwash.

READY FOR USE

Cavex Oral Pre Rinse contains 1.5% hydrogen peroxide to which a bio-adhesive has been added for the correct viscosity and foam condition. The antibacterial effect of the erythritol enhances the cleansing effect. The addition of glycerine for dry mouth and a light minty taste make it pleasant for your patient to rinse before treatment. The 500 ml bottle is suitable for 50 mouthwashes and is immediately ready for use. There is an integrated measuring cup on the bottle. This will give you exactly the right dose when you squeeze the bottle.

STABLE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

Hydrogen peroxide is not a panacea that kills the entire virus. Still, it is effective to further reduce the number of virus particles spreading to the soft tissue. The hydrogen peroxide in Cavex Oral Pre Rinse is stabilized and therefore identical and effective with every rinse. When the hydrogen peroxide in a pre-procedural flushing agent is not stable, this means that the reaction starts immediately. As a result, the percentage of hydrogen peroxide immediately falls and continues to fall until it falls (far) below 1%. If that is the case, a rinse aid will no longer have any effect. Thanks to the stable hydrogen peroxide in Cavex Oral, you can always rest assured that your patients are flushing with the correct dosage of active ingredient.

User EXPERIENCES IN THE NETHERLANDS AND BELGIUM

“This tastes so much better than the diluted version we used to make ourselves.”

Over 500 dental professionals in the Netherlands and Belgium tested Cavex Oral Pre Rinse in April and May 2020. The results were clear: 90% of the patients experienced the product as positive. A patient said through the oral care professional: “The smell and taste are very pleasant.” In addition, 97% of the professionals indicated that they would consider starting every treatment with Cavex Oral Pre Rinse from now on. A recurring comment from the evaluation was: “This tastes so much better than the diluted version we used to make ourselves.” It is also striking that many dental professionals who tested Cavex Oral Pre Rinse, integrated it into their treatment procedure. Furthermore, several universities now also use it standard prior to treatments.

RESEARCH JOURNAL OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES

In the summer of 2020, The Journal of Infectious Diseases conducted a comparative study with seven available pre-procedural mouthwashes. The study investigated viral effectiveness against COVID-19. Reduction of the virus particles has been looked at. This research has shown that Cavex Oral Pre Rinse is proven to be effective in reducing virus particles in 30 seconds.

START with a PRE-PROCEDURAL RINSE

We won’t be freed from of COVID just yet. This means that measures remain necessary to prevent the virus from spreading. Pre-procedural rinsing with hydrogen peroxide is one of them. Cavex Oral Pre Rinse contains stabilized hydrogen peroxide and is easy to use. Dental professionals, universities and patients are very enthusiastic about it.
