HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — Former U.S. Representative and South Carolina Congressman John Jenrette died Friday at 86, according to an obituary.
Jenrette was a native of Horry County born in Conway in 1936 and graduated from Loris High School, according to his biography. He was also a North Myrtle Beach judge and city attorney in the 1960s.

He won the U.S. House seat for South Carolina's 6th District in 1974 and held office until 1980.
Jenrette was charged with and convicted of accepting a $50,000 bribe in the FBI sting operation known as Abscam in 1980. He was sentenced to two years in prison but only served 13 months.
