The former mayor of the City of Jo’burg Mpho Moerane has passed away.

His family brought this to light during a media briefing held at Milpark Hospital, in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

“He sadly did not respond positively to treatment and with heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we confirm that we lost our beloved Mpho this afternoon [Wednesday].

“And his passing has deeply pained us. Let me add that he was certified dead at 17:54. Mpho was a well-known activist, full of life, determined and committed to work for his community,” confirmed family spokesperson Mike Maile.

He had been hospitalised at the facility following involvement in a car accident – where he sustained severe injuries last Monday night.

Moerane’s demise followed rumours that he had already died.

But his family came out to clear the air earlier – noting that he was still alive

They further added that he was stable and recovering in Milpark Hospital.

Maile called on those who spread the fake news to stop.

“All I can say is that comrade Mpho is not conscious at the moment. However, I can’t go into details of his illness. That’s all I can say. As you can imagine the family is distraught,” he explained.

Moerane, who was the African National Congress (ANC) caucus leader in the City of Johannesburg, was due to contest the regional chairperson position at the ANC Johannesburg elective conference before the accident took place.

He was also the executive mayor of Joburg City after the death of then-mayor Jolidee Matongo, who also died due to a car accident.

Details of his memorial and funeral services will be communicated duly.
