Call: What to Expect

  • Anonymous: All calls are filtered through software that removes the identification of the caller including the phone number and location.
  • Emergency Services: The advocate’s priority is to establish that the caller is in a safe place to talk. If the caller is in immediate danger, the caller is advised to hang up and dial 911. Note: StrongHearts advocates are not able to connect callers to 911.
  • Assessment: If the caller is in a safe place to talk, the advocate asks what brought the caller to reach out to StrongHearts. The advocate listens to the caller and helps them identify priorities and options.
  • Education: Advocates provide peer support with domestic violence and healthy relationship education for all gender identities and sexual orientations.
  • Safety Planning: Advocates engage callers in discussions about safety planning and share service provider information. The goal is to ensure the safety of the caller and help them find local direct services.
  • Service Providers: StrongHearts Helpline has an internal referral database of Native-centered service providers that include both Tribal and non-Tribal service providers.
  • Further Assistance: StrongHearts advocates are available 24/7/365. Contacts may reach out for help as often as needed.

Text and Chat Advocacy

If it’s not safe to call, our text or online chat advocacy sessions might be a better option. Users receive one-on-one, real-time, confidential information from a trained advocate.

Unfortunately, StrongHearts Native Helpline is not able to provide internet-based services to people younger than 13. While our chat advocacy is not available to people 12 and younger, our phone services are available to people of all ages.
