Yo soy Blake, your host. And it’s my pleasure to help you navigate the dialogue that you’ll hear today!

Like in every episode, you’ll hear a conversation twice. On the first listen you can sit back and relax, and just get used to the flow and how Spanish sounds. After that I’ll explain to you some key vocabulary and expressions, and then you’ll listen to it again. As you already know, you don’t need to understand everything, but rather familiarize yourself with how Spanish is spoken, and learn some new vocabulary.

¿Todo listo? ¡Empecemos!

Today you’ll hear a conversation between David, from Colombia, and Aldana, from Argentina, about Aldana’s new apartment. Let’s see if you can understand some of the descriptions that she gives!

David: ¡Hola, Aldana! ¿Qué tal? Escuché que tienes un nuevo apartamento.

Aldana: Sí, estoy refeliz. Encontré un nuevo departamento en el centro.

David: ¡Oh, queda en el centro! ¿Y es grande?

Aldana: Sí, es bastante más grande que el anterior.

David: ¡Qué bueno! ¿Y es luminoso?

Aldana: Sí, gracias a Dios, le pega el sol al menos la mitad del día, así que estoy refeliz con eso.

David: ¡Buenísimo! ¿Y está amueblado?

Aldana: Parte sí, parte no. Ya traía la cocina, pero el resto de los muebles los traigo de mi departamento anterior.

David: Ah, vale. Ya tienes una cama, tienes sillas…

Aldana: Sí, la cama, la mesa de luz… Todo lo orienté, obviamente, cerca de la ventana para recibir esos rayos de sol. Y bueno, nada, todavía estoy viendo cómo orientar las cosas en el comedor. Me falta la mesa y, bueno, un par de cosas más.

David: Perfecto. ¿Y es caro?

Aldana: Es un poco más caro que el anterior también, pero no me puedo quejar porque es más grande.

David: ¿Y está cerca del trabajo?

Aldana: Sí, me toma alrededor de 15 minutos en tren, así que para una ciudad grande como esta creo que sí.

David: Es genial, superimportante… Vale, tengo que irme, pero me alegra escuchar que estás contenta en tu nuevo apartamento.

Aldana: Dale, ¡muchas gracias! ¡Nos estamos viendo!

Blake: ¿Qué tal? How was that? Were you able to grasp the flow of the conversation? As you already know, the first listen is for you to get used to the dialogue and the sounds of Spanish.

Let’s now unpack what they said about Aldana’s new apartment!

So first of all, did you catch how they said “apartment” in Spanish? David uses “apartamento” and Aldana, “departamento”. Both words have the same meaning and you can hear them in different parts of Latin America.

But going back to her new place, David asks her a few questions, and the first one is about the location. Did you hear if the apartment is well located? Apparently so, it’s “en el centro”. And it’s also “más grande que el anterior”, bigger than the previous one. Not bad!

And what about natural light, ¿es luminoso? Sí, it gets sunlight “al menos la mitad del día”, at least half of the day. Nice!

But… “¿está amueblado?”, is it furnished? Well, not completely. Did you hear what it already has? “La cocina”, the kitchen, and this is lucky because in some countries you might need to install the kitchen yourself! Aldana brought the rest of the furniture from her previous apartment, and she’s started to decorate a bit. Did you hear where she put “la cama”, the bed, and “la mesita de luz”, the night table? “Cerca de la ventana”, close to the window. But she’s still not sure where to put the things in the “comedor”, dining room, as she’s still missing “la mesa”, the table, and a couple of things.

So Aldana’s apartment sounds like a very nice place, but there are two other questions from David. The first one being “¿es caro?”, is it expensive? Y sí, “es más caro que el anterior”, it’s more expensive than the previous one, but also bigger and centrally located. And his last question: “¿está cerca del trabajo?”, is it close to work? Sí, it only takes her “quince minutos” to get there. That’s really close!

Alright, now that I’ve explained some of the key words and sentences, ready for the second listen? ¡Seguro que sí!

David: ¡Hola, Aldana! ¿Qué tal? Escuché que tienes un nuevo apartamento.

Aldana: Sí, estoy refeliz. Encontré un nuevo departamento en el centro.
