About the Q Acoustics Concept 50
A high-performance passive tower speaker from Q Acoustics
A high-performance passive tower speaker from Q Acoustics
I've had the pleasure of auditioning Q Acoustics' powered speaker offerings, which significantly outperform expectations, especially for their size. And we get great feedback on the company's value-priced 5000 series passive models. Their new, high-performance Concept 50 tower speaker uses a unique cabinet design and a custom-tailored driver array to deliver pure, uncolored sound.
A cabinet made to stay quiet
Q Acoustics wanted the Concept 50's cabinet to "get out of the way" or disappear sonically as much as possible, to allow the speaker's high-tech drivers to perform at their best. To do so, they employed a few cool, unique technologies.
This tower speaker uses Q Acoustics's Gelcore™ cabinet construction, which features non-setting gel sandwiched between two individual cabinet layers to minimize high-frequency resonances. That helps the speaker deliver focused, clear sound even during intense sections of a movie soundtrack or song.
The Concept 50 also uses the company's acclaimed P2P™ (Point-to-Point™) bracing. Its design involves finite element analysis (which simulates how materials act under real-world stresses) and laser interferometry (used in this case to measure extremely small vibrations) to nail down which parts of the cabinet are susceptible to low-frequency reverberations. The company then adds extra bracing to those spots to eliminate vibrations and to give the cabinet extra rigidity.
Custom-designed drivers for pure, natural sound
A pair of 5" woofers handle the mids and bass. These drivers were specifically made for the Concept series and optimized for this tower speaker's cabinet. They're mounted to a rigid aluminum baffle that creates the perfect acoustic seal while killing any harmful vibrations that might arise when the woofers move. The baffle also helps to decouple the drivers from the rest of the cabinet, further reducing the chance of sound-muddying resonances.
In-between the mid/bass cones is a 1" tweeter, which is hermetically sealed and decoupled from the cabinet and other drivers to ensure nuanced, detailed, uncolored highs.
Tying all the drivers together is a custom-designed crossover mounted all the way at the bottom of the cabinet on the speaker's isolation base. That helps keep microphonic noise (non-electrical noise caused by physical movement or vibration) and electromagnetic interference from sneaking in.
Vibration-isolating base plate
At the bottom of the Concept 50 is a unique baseplate designed to keep vibrations at bay. It's made of up plates that are separated by "suspension spheres" that limit the amount of contact each plate has with one another. That design isolates the cabinet from any external vibrations, which helps give the speaker better imaging, greater soundstage depth, and transparent sound unaffected by external influences.

Features
Custom 2-Way Driver Design: The Q Acoustics Concept 50 floorstanding loudspeaker utilizes a 2-way driver design featuring two custom-made 5" mid/bass drivers and a 0.9" high-frequency tweeter. All three drivers units are fixed to the speaker enclosure's stiff 3mm aluminum baffle plate before it is fitted to the cabinet providing the correct acoustic seal, dampening vibrations and minimizing structural coupling.
- Hermetically Sealed & Mechanically Isolated Tweeter: The 0.9" soft-dome tweeter is hermetically sealed and mechanically isolated (floating) from the baffle to prevent internal pressure modulations from within the cabinet and adjacent mid/bass driver. The inner chamber is also carefully vented for lower distortion, with a lower crossover point for seamless integration through the crossover region. A shallow waveguide further improves the directivity of the tweeter's sound dispersion.
- Dual Mid/Bass Woofers: The Q Acoustics Concept 50 houses two 5" mid/bass drivers (one above the tweeter and one below the tweeter) for smooth midrange and superior bass dynamics. At 30.5mm, the 5" mid/bass drivers' voice coil increases motor strength resulting in a 50% increase in power handling over a comparable driver with 25.4 mm voice coil.
Crossover Design: The advanced crossover network is mounted to the Concept 50's isolation base, keeping it free of sound-effecting vibrations and away from the electro-magnetic influence of the drivers themselves.
Bass Reflex Cabinet: The Concept 50 floorstanding speaker employs a bass-reflex enclosure with a rear-firing port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. A port plug is included to tighten the speaker's bass, if the bass sounds too "muddy" or "boomy" due to placement. .A cloth grille magnetically attaches to the front of the speaker cabinet. The Concept 50 utilizes unique cabinet design & construction to deliver unaltered and uncolored sound for improved dynamics and soundstage.
- Gelcore Cabinet Construction: The Gelcore cabinet construction is designed to minimize high-frequency noise. A unique design comprised of a non-setting gel sandwiched between two individual layers, this specially developed adhesive dissipates high-frequency vibrations, generated by the moving drivers, into heat to maintain a focused audio performance.
- P2P (Point-to-Point) Bracing: To keep the speaker cabinet as rigid as possible, P2P (Point-to-Point) internal bracing is employed. This "Point-2-Point" (P2P) internal bracing stiffens the cabinet to minimize lower frequency vibrations, while focusing stereo imaging and improving soundstage.
- HPE (Helmholtz Pressure Equalizer): HPE (Helmholtz Pressure Equalizer) technology designed to convert pressure to velocity and reduce the overall pressure gradient within the speaker enclosure, has been applied to the floorstanding speaker to reduce cabinet resonance. This technology is perfect for taller loudspeakers that tend to resonate at a single frequency.
Dual Binding Post Terminals: The floorstanding speaker has two sets of binding posts connected by jumper straps. The binding post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 12AWG) and banana plugs (single only). Using the dual binding posts terminals, you can choose to bi-amp or bi-wire the speaker for higher quality sound.
- Bi-Wiring: Bi-wiring can provide noticeable improvements in the overall transparency of your loudspeakers. Run separate speaker wires to the low & high frequency drivers from a single amplifier.
- Bi-Amping: Bi-amping allows you to use separate amplifiers for the high & low frequency sections of your loudspeaker for greater dynamic range & lower distortion. We recommend that your separate amplifiers have identical gain to preserve the speaker's voicing balance.
Note: Make sure the jumper straps between the dual binding post terminals are removed when making a bi-amp or bi-wire type of connection.
Isolation Base with Round or Spike Feet: The Concept 50 features an integrated isolation base that incorporates a unique suspension system in the form of a sprung baseplate which consists of two plates that are separated by suspension "spheres" to effectively isolate the floorstanding speaker cabinet from interferences such as internal & external vibrations, providing tighter stereo imaging, while also delivering greater depth. In addition to the integrated isolation base, the Concept 50 comes with a rear support stabilizer and the choice of round or spike feet.
- Round Feet: Use the round feet on hardwood, tile, laminate, and vinyl flooring. The Concept 50 measures 16.4375"(w) x 40.4375"(h) x 12.625"(d) with the round feet installed.
- Spike Feet: Use he spike feet on carpeted flooring. The spike feet can damage hardwood, tile, laminate and other such flooring. The Concept 50 measures 16.4375"(w) x 40.625"(h) x 12.625"(d) with the spike feet installed.
Note: Always use the rear support stabilizer and either the rubber or spike feet for maximum stability and optimum performance.
Application & Placement Options: A pair of Concept 50 speakers can be used in a simple 2ch stereo music setup, as well as utilized as front and/or rear speakers in a home theater system. The pair of speakers should be positioned 6.5' to 13.125' apart and form an equilateral triangle with the main listening position. Angling or "toeing" the speakers can provide better stereo imaging and "sweet-spot" for your main listening position.
- The speaker should also be placed at least 7.875" away from the back wall and 19.6875" away from the side walls.
- Generally, the closer the loudspeaker is to the rear wall the more the bass frequencies will be reinforced. If bass frequencies become to "muddy" or "boomy", you can use the included port plug to reduce and tighten the bass response.
