Nederlands: Foto. Batik is "een uitsparingstechniek waarbij was wordt aangebracht op de stofondergrond waarop verving volgt. Het opbrengen van de was gebeurt meestal met de tjanting [canting] (waspen), of met de tjap [cap] (handstempel)" (Alit Veldhuisen-Djajasoebrata, Bloemen van het heelal). Het maken van batik is een oude Javaanse traditie. Toen rond 1815 de eerste industrieel geproduceerde katoentjes uit Engeland op Java werden aangevoerd betekende dat in vele gevallen wel het einde van het lokale spinnen en weven, maar niet van de batik. Integendeel. Enerzijds maakte de batiksters graag gebruik van de fraaie industrieel geweven ongekleurde katoen uit Europa, anderzijds was de introductie van het goedkopere cap proces een antwoord op de goedkope 'prints' uit Europa..
