Jake Connor’s big move as Brett Hodgson makes bold Hull FC decision

The conundrum of Jake Connor has been one of the most talked about in the Super League in 2022.

The maverick playmaker has been in at fullback, halfback and now centre for Hull FC as head coach Brett Hodgson tinkers to try and find the best solution to his problem.

Jack Walker was brought in from Leeds Rhinos on loan whilst Connor was injured in a bid to fill the gap as well as create competition for when Connor returned.

But, Hodgson seems to be favouring the former Leeds man at the back with Connor pushed out to centre in the weekend’s big win over Toulouse Olympique in the south of France.

Despite that, Connor roamed inside for a number of FC attacks, confusing the Toulouse side over and over again as Connor and Walker worked together in attack to create some real potency going forward.

That seemed to work wonders with the Black and Whites inflicting a 30-6 scoreline on their French opponents, but it remains to be seen whether or not Hodgson will go with that strategy once more having made such a bold move at the weekend.

And, though he recently spent six weeks on the sidelines through injury, the ex-Huddersfield Giants star still sits top of the try assist charts in Super League with 27.

The fact that Huddersfield’s Tui Lolohea sits second on 24 – who has also had a spell out with injury – proves just how important Connor has been to the Black and Whites in 2022.

Ironically, Connor will go up against Lolohea on Friday night when the two meet at the John Smith’s Stadium in what will be one of the most anticipated clashes of the year.

For Connor, it’s another opportunity to showcase his credentials a she looks to force his way into Shaun Wane’s England thinking for the World Cup at the end of the year with his omission causing consternation amongst Hull FC fans who get to see him play week in, week out.
