Griffith City Council joins Live Traffic App

Griffith City Council is now sharing real-time traffic information with road users through the Live Traffic NSW website and app.

Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Operations, Phil King said the new technology streamlines traffic information.

“Council staff have received training which will allow data to be loaded into the NSW Live Traffic website and App. Road impacts across the local and state roads will all be in one place,” said Mr King.

“We are really happy to be able to provide up-to-date road information using this new platform.

“Our community members will now be able to view road incidents (planned/unplanned road closures, major events, road conditions and hazards) using the Live Traffic NSW and third-party navigation apps, which means it’ll also be on navigational systems such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze and TomTom.

“Having all this information in one place not only helps keep busy motorists moving, but it also contributes to keeping our community safe.

“During emergencies like floods or bushfires, Live Traffic NSW will be the go-to for motorists to help them make informed decisions and travel safely.”

Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said “some information will still be on the Council website showing any scheduled road closures; however, the Live Traffic App will allow Council to show far more information in ‘real-time’ indicating the actual conditions of a road once it is reported to Council.”

Preserve your memories at Griffith Pioneer Park Museum

Griffith Pioneer Park Museum is seeking out those who remember the old Post Office in Griffith, as part of their new display.

The Post Office was on the site of the current building, but an older style with red brick and grand arched windows.

Pioneer Park Museum has a recreation of the original Griffith Post Office which was operational from 1925 to 1979 with staff keen to talk to those who have stories to tell about the original building.

“We’re currently developing new displays with a focus on the Post Office and would love to be able to share memories, stories, experiences and anecdotes to preserve this important part of our local history,” said Jason Richardson, Curator Griffith Pioneer Park Museum.

“Do you have memories of the Griffith Post Office? Maybe you received an important telegram, or worked behind the counter? We would love for you to share any stories you might have.”

Postal services at that time included technologies not seen today, like telegraph operators communicating through the percussive messaging of Morse Code. Aside from parcels and letters, the building also housed the switchboards used to link telephones in the region.

“Those who lived on farms might remember the distinctive ringing of their party line, which indicated when a phone call was for their household rather than another that shared the connection,” said Mr Richardson.
There are many ways the Post Office connected Griffith and it’s surprising to discover what services were provided in the building.

“Phyllis Bell recently recalled working as Phonogram Operator for seven years and says her colleagues were the nicest people,” he said.

“She remembered that as she progressed to being a senior staff member, her role included liaising with the CSIRO to update weather reports placed at the front of the Post Office.”

Memories like these will help the new display to reflect how important services within the community have changed.

“It’s details like these memories that help Pioneer Park Museum to share the experiences of the local people who shaped our history,” said Mr. Richardson.

If you have a recollection of the Griffith Post Office, please contact Pioneer Park Museum on 6962 8333 or email Jason.Richardson@griffith.nsw.gov.au

New biosecurity signs to help protect wine supply throughout Riverina Murray
The NSW Government will install 65 new biosecurity signs across the State’s 16 wine regions to keep our world-class vineyards phylloxera free.

Phyloxera are very small aphid-like insects that are regarded as the world’s worst grapevine pest.
Nationals candidate for Murray Peta Betts welcomes the announcement, warning an incursion would devastate the region’s wine production and the people it employs.

“We produce some of the finest wine in the works in the Griffith area, so it is no surprise we have seen a sharp increase in visitors to our vineyards,” Ms Betts said.

“With these visitors comes the inevitable threat of a biosecurity pest incursion like Phylloxera that can spread easily and estrous our vines quickly.”

“We’re also in close proximity to Victoria which already has  six Phylloxera infested zones, so there’s a risk the pest could come in on machinery operated by contractors.

That’s why these signs are so important to raise awareness and protect so many of our livelihoods.”
NSW Minister for Agriculture Dugald Saunders said movement of phylloxera was most likely caused by immature insects, known as crawlers, which can be easily transported on clothing, footwear, equipment, vehicles and in soil and vine materials.

“The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government is taking the strongest possible approach to keeping our primary industries safe, including our grape sector, which contributes $14 billion to the NSW economy annually,” Mr Saunders said.

“These new signs will not only make visitors aware of the threat of phylloxera, it will also alert them to the biosecurity measures vineyards have in place like washing shoes or not entering certain parts of their properties.”

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said it was critical people travelling through wine production areas understood and respected the rules.

“The roadside signs will be placed strategically across NSW’s 16 wine regions to maximise their visibility and impact,” Mr Farraway said.

“Transport for NSW, NSW Department of Primary Industries and the NSW Wine Industry Association are working together to protect our viticulture industry from phylloxera, which would seriously jeopardise the 490 million bottles of wine we produce every year.”

Message from Councillor Shari Blumer
Image
When I was running for Council in December of 2021, my husband and I discussed what we thought was important about local government for printing on campaign t-shirts that were made.

He came up with a slogan that I thought hit the mark; “Local Government should not be distant.”

I have now been a Griffith City Councillor for some 14 months and am able to reflect on that slogan, what it means in practice and what I can do better as a Councillor to connect to the community.
Next week is Harmony Week and the Council is holding its citizenship ceremony on Tuesday 5pm at the Griffith Regional Theatre. All are welcome to attend.

I have been to two such ceremonies as a Councillor and they are possibly my favourite part of the job, at the last one I attended on Australia Day there were over 50 new citizens from 20 countries. It is emotional and overwhelming to witness these Griffith residents become a formal part of our Australian family.

I would encourage you to come along and witness this very special event.

There is no doubt that Griffith does not look the same as it did 20 years ago and will look very different in 20 years’ time, migration is what has sustained Griffith and its industries and the cultural heart of the town.

The changing face of our community means that Council will need to meet the challenge of how we communicate with different parts of community, some who don’t speak the same language as us but still have the same needs and wants.

Feedback both positive and negative is an opportunity for any service provider to mature and improve services along with better reflecting the changing face of our community.

If you would like to provide your feedback, please visit griffith.nsw.gov.au and complete an online feedback form, or contact Council on 1300 176 077.

Griffith in all that is and has been, is the exemplar of multiculturalism but next week in Harmony Week I will challenge myself to learn more about the people that live here, that I don’t yet know.  To reach out a hand to our new residents and ask them what it is they need, and how we can help, so that local government, truly need not be distant.

Please consider being part of a Harmony Week event and think about how you can assist our new residents as they settle into life in our wonderful City.

Stay safe and well,
Councillor Shari Blumer
