Access Spike Traction Device

The Black Diamond Access Spike Traction Device straps to hiking shoes and boots so you can trek trails with icy sections a lot easier. Like crampons, the Access features stainless steel spikes to assist with traction. Unlike crampons, the Access weighs less, packs better, and accommodates shoes and boots for longer trails with icy, non-technical terrain. It's perfect for treks as grand as the Grand Teton, where there's more mileage on rocky terrain than icy, but there's still the occasional apron full of ice to navigate from time to time.

Best traction device

I routinely use these for 6-12 mile treks and they provide secure traction, are easy to apply and remove while standing, and do not fall off or move despite heavy use. They’re the best.

Very light use and metal broke

I’ve used these maybe 10 times on hikes or dog walks. The triangle shaped metal piece connecting the heel rubber to the chain completely snapped. I’m going to see if my outdoor store has a record of my purchase date, but I think it’s just beyond warranty. No wonder my local spot no longer carries this brand for spikes. It’s always extra sad when an outdoor company makes garbage. My YaksTrax, while less grip, have had major longevity. Kathoola is the brand I should have gone with but I chose these because they weren’t red colored. So bummed. I like durability in my gear.

Not true to size

Got the XL to fit Keen Revel IV in men's size 12. They can barely stretch over them but they are way too small. They fit a Women's 9.5 Solomon nicely though. They seem to be built well, but I wouldn't recommend them based on the small sizing.

Good quality

I haven't gotten a chance to use these yet so my opinion is only based on using similar/other traction devices. I purchased these because the spikes are relatively small, good walking on ice urban terrain as well as mixed trail conditions. I like the chain and all metal components. The way the chain attaches to the rubber material also looks solid. I'm hoping they last a few years of mixed urban and trail use

Perfect

Like all of things BD, they did what they were supposed to. The pull tab is great for old people with limited flexibility.

Love these. Bought a pair

Love these. Bought a pair for my wife after a recent ice storm. She was struggling in her yaktrax and i was super stable in my bd micro spikes.

Don't waste your money or time.

I made a review about a week ago after using these for 3 days and the problem I had with them. Now an update after a couple more days of about 5-7 miles in mixed terrain. I noticed the back portion of the harness that fastens to the chain was wearing significantly and has finally failed. Nope, these "spikes" are not made for what I do, going with another brand. One star rating is being gracious! Also, customer service warranty emailed me that at least three weeks before my claim could be addressed.

Nice on Ice

Just returned from a frozen winter hike on the west side of Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, Tennessee. The trail was mostly icy snow with some patches of pure ice over smooth rock steps. The Access Spike worked perfectly. I was wearing size 43 Mammut mountain boots (Taiss Light Mid) and have used the same spikes with size 43 Scarpa trail running shoes. In both cases the size L Access Spike fit fine. Without question a five-star piece of equipment.

Needed for winter movement

These cleats are a MUST for anyone moving around outside in winter conditions. Easy on-but stable and firm fitting. Remember to size up for winter boots. Trail running is super comfortable as the spikes are small but bite well.
