Topical Authority - Key Points * It's common for sites to publish 100 pieces of content, and only 5 articles rank - a key explanation for this is topical authority * Topical authority is a better, more precise way to prioritize topics than domain authority, keyword difficulty, and long tail * The difference between high and low topical authority is substantial * Smaller sites with low domain authority can still rank for competitive terms if they have high topical authority * So you can know the 5 articles out of 100 that will perform by prioritizing based on topical authority * Graphite built a topical authority score, has proven it's predictive of outcomes, it's a key part of our process, join the waitlist to get access - https://lnkd.in/dCkmwmwQ * We also proved that TA is high weight ranking signal What Is Topical Authority? * Topical authority is a modern version of domain authority It is topical in that a site has authority for a particular topic area vs. in broadly for any keyword * Keyword difficulty is an imprecise measurement of whether you can compete * Many sites with low domain authority can rank for difficult keywords if they have sufficient topical authority * Google recently confirmed that topical authority is a part of the algorithm https://lnkd.in/dkcAj2Vx How To Measure Topical Authority Simply * A simple way to measure is to look at the n-grams for search terms you rank for within GSC * How to video: https://lnkd.in/dDzMBnb5 * Link to tool: https://lnkd.in/dhVmqwmY Graphite Topical Authority Score * In reality, topical authority is more complex than n-grams of keywords Graphite built an algorithm using embeddings and semantic relationships that give a broader and more accurate coverage of what a topic is * For example, a recipe site, Yummly, had a viral post on "jello shots," and then ranked for "vodka" and "whiskey" which aren't synonyms, but close to each other in a keyword graph * Our algorithm is predictive of outcomes, which means that we have both proven that topical authority is a part of the algorithm, and that it has a large effect on rankings Analysis & White Paper José Luis Paredes Gregory Druck on the Graphite AI Team performed a rigorous statistical analysis and white paper (attached) showing * High TA gains visibility 57% faster than Low TA * High TA pages are 62% more likely to get traffic within the first week * High TA needs 30% less time to reach specific impression milestones * Link to full white paper: https://lnkd.in/dMRMWeKy More Resources * Lenny Rachitsky podcast discussing topical authority: https://lnkd.in/dw4ZijUk * Reforge Class covering topical authority in more depth: https://lnkd.in/dfvJwyyU * Kevin Indig: https://lnkd.in/dKCYyN8C

Nice post Ethan Smith. Topical authority and clustering are something that helps get results much faster if you do everything properly, of course. We did some nice testing on our side projects at an agency before implementing them for our clients, and we tested two strategies: 1. Focusing on 3 related but different clusters at the same time. 2. Focusing on a single cluster and working on its authority. You can already guess which one brought me 150% higher growth in clicks.

Talking about topical authority without mentioning Koray Tugberk GUBUR is like talking about cubism and skipping Picasso.

Love the approach to pull n-grams from GSC because you can compare it over time and measure topical authority more granularly!

Great post! I've shared with my team. I've seen the "build 100, 5 rank" example in my own experience. In GSC, the topics that bubbled up are the ones I doubled-down on. But in a more strategic SaaS example, small niche, with only one really strong Topic to own, we built out that Topic cluster, built links, and as a result the cluster is doing great, but interestingly the money page starts ranking for all of the Software keywords related to this topic. It took some time, but is a solid example of the power of TA Ethan Smith

Kevin talked (rightfully) about how "topical authority" was this wishy-washy concept that people threw around without actually having a definition....so to have a way to precisely measure it is a game changer!

This is super interesting. I have not dug deep into the topical side, but it makes a tremendous amount of sense. Thanks for making it crazy easy to get started.
