Welp, now we know where the arcade carpeting went...

u/AnubissDarkling avatar

Fun fact, that's dazzle carpeting, used to distract/hide the dirt better than straight or flat colour carpets

ā€¢

That same strategy is also used on bus seat carpets šŸ˜„

u/AnubissDarkling avatar

It is!!

Also granite countertops, most of the time. Mine hides small messes so well that I have to do the touch test to make sure I've actually gotten them friggin' clean.

Some celebrities wear it to mess witty photographs. And back in WWI, Germans used it to mess with the enemyā€™s eyes, make it harder to see which direction their vehicles were going. At least I think so?

u/kirakiraluna avatar

British, not german. It was created by Norman Wilkinson and then got adopted by US navy too

Dazzle paint on ship is my favourite type of camouflage paint. I saw a digital model of a ship moving in full dazzle and it was so trippy. Other than messing with the direction of movement it also made it hard to gauge speed on sight.

Minor mistake, day is now ruined lmao

u/Khar-Selim avatar

it also makes it hard to see what kind of ship it is, or whether there's other ships with it. So you think a cruiser/destroyer group looks like a battleship or vice versa.

Who can afford theater concession prices? Thatā€™s three times more cup holders than will be needed at any given time.

You're not allowed to bring your own food except hot drinks and alcohol? What 3rd world country are you from

u/juh4z avatar
ā€¢

My 3rd world country passed a law several years ago that prohibited cinemas from prohibiting people from bringing foods into the cinema (except alcoholic beverages)

y'know, as they should, cause that's utter bullshit lol

Iā€™m ok with snacks but not food. Sorry Iā€™m not tryna watch my movie and smell some butter chicken in the back mixing in with someoneā€™s dominos upfront and some dude slurping pho next to me.

Cause if you allow food in america thatā€™s exactly whatā€™s gonna happen people are gonna come in groups with boxes of pizza or buckets of chicken wings .

You should be able to bring in snacks and drinks. Not actual meals.

u/BuyingMeat avatar

I used to work at a theater that allowed all outside food. It was awful.

As a moviegoer, constantly being hit with the smell of BBQ, pizza, wings, pasta, basically anything you can imagine is really distracting.

As an employee, there were always wing bones on the floor we had to sweep up between showings. People who brought in buckets of chicken always left the buckets behind but at least the bones were in them. Wing eaters just dropped the bones on the floor.

u/juh4z avatar
ā€¢

Actual food doesn't smell any more than snacks do

They're also at the perfect height for accidentally hitting your drink with your knee as you get up and spilling it all over your neighbors lap.

u/-Pruples- avatar

Lmao I missed that. Why the fuck would they be at seat level and not armrest level?

u/naziryoutube avatar

Troll face

u/Interesting-Camp-252 avatar

So your neighbor can borrow your armrest and fondle your straw with his buttery fingers.

I'd like to think the movie titles follow a Fibonacci sequence.

3 girls 2 cups

Maybe Iā€™ve just had bad experiences, but this seems totally normal for me, this happens all the time.

u/TheOneTonWanton avatar

It's normal for any sort of space-saving connected seating What's not normal is where these are positioned. These seats were designed by a psychopath.

You don't all need a gallon of soda. Plus the XL gets a refill. Just share, man.

And don't do the penis through the bottom trick. That just gets soda and ice everywhere.

u/BuyingMeat avatar

No refills since COVID, at least at the theaters I go to.

Man, COVID ruined everything.

There are still fast food places with the bathrooms "out of order for safety" since early in the pandemic, and now they're just depriving me of a place to wash my hands before I eat my food so they don't have to schedule employees to keep up with the bathrooms.

u/Interesting-Camp-252 avatar

Plot twist: the employees aren't washing their hands either.

u/BuyingMeat avatar

I hadn't thought of that, but I guess it's an easy way to keep costs down.

Assert dominance. Arrive a bit early, buy two drinks, sit in one of the inner seats.

I can smell this picture.

Never known the cup holders to be at maximum capacity to be honest with you

u/MayoFetish avatar

The theater I used to work at had a cup holder for EVERY OTHER seat. Wars were fought.

The aisle seat can just set their cup on the step there. I'm sure no one will kick it in the dark.

u/naziryoutube avatar

Put it under the light it should be fine.

u/CooperDahBooper avatar

Naw the fourth persons cup holder is the stairs

This has to be a reading cinema in Aus right?

No, it's in Argentina lol

ok looks exactly the same

Just use a cup holder expander.

u/Purplekeyboard avatar

Does every single person in a theater have a drink?

No, but the odds that 4 people in a row do seem pretty good.

u/Senor_Ding-Dong avatar

I hear ya. I'm in my 40s and I don't think I've ever had a drink in a movie theater. Getting snacks/popcorn/drinks, etc. was just never part of the movie experience for us growing up. We typically went to a movie after lunch or dinner so there was no need for food.

u/ScareTheRiven avatar

This looks remarkably similar to a theatre near where I used to live and if so, the cupholders are 100% full of sticky crap even after "cleaning".

Cinemaxx Germany? Looks like it šŸ˜‚

Tbh most theaters have very crappy seats. Now they actually sell the good seats as a special stuff with a supplement...

I even went to one where the seat was not wide enough. The armrest was big, but it took too much space from the seat that most people could not sit comfortably in it.

EDIT > forgot to mention I'm in France.

Every theater around me amc iPic gold star cinamas and Hollywood blvd theater all have large reclining seats a small personal table for food and drink and seats that are in pairs of two with a ā€œend table ā€œ like split between them so on a date your not sitting in the middle row with people on either side of you close to you etc.

It seems that theaters here in my area ā€œChicagolandā€ prioritize premium experience and less seating rather than packing them in like they did prior.

They also have full menus kitchens and bars and a button to call a server over for ordering or refills anytime.

Also spacious about 40 seats a theater room now instead of 300.

I might just live in a nice area and assume everyone else lives like this idk.

ā€¢ ā€¢ Edited

I'm from germany and I think that only premium cinemas really have a reason to exist. If people just want to see a movie as cheaply as possible, they can do that at home, so there's no real point for a super cheap cinema.

My favourite cinema around here is also pretty premium, though they have both regular and premium seats. The regular seats are fine and still pretty comfy, not crammed but also not super spacious. The premium seats are super spacious, have leg rests and small tables, though there are no servers in this cinema (and I'm also not sure if I'd enjoy having them run around during the movie).

The cinema also includes 2 restaurants (one "american diner" and one italian restaurant), a bar, and a bowling center (which itself also has burgers and finger food, so technically 3 restaurants).

This theater is also home to the currently largest IMAX screen on the planet.

And just by being a huge ass theater, it seats 600 people without having to squeeze :D

The prices range from 9ā‚¬ ($10) for a regular seat in a regular room to 20,50ā‚¬ ($22,77) for the most expensive premium seats in the IMAX room. On mondays, you can get a regular seat for 7ā‚¬ ($7,77).

How are the prices at your cinema?

I once paid the extra ā‚¬ for the comfortable lounge seat and had the nap of the lifetime trying to watch a war movie.

In my defence, I had a double shift that day before going to the theatre

ā€¢

Tell me, how many cup holders do you see?

u/kvdp12 avatar

Might as well leave a snapped pool cue behind while youā€™re at it

They probably know that only 2 in 3 people buy drinks

u/LimitedWard avatar

Americans do not hydrate nearly enough to justify 1 cup per seat.

What if I told you this wasn't in America though šŸ‘€

u/thatwyvern avatar

The real movie is the fight to the death over the cup holder.

Ha classic Vue.

u/binglybleep avatar

The vue near me only has the fancy leather reclining seats, itā€™s by far the best cinema out of the ones near me

Yeah not all are built the same, especially if theyā€™ve had refits. Mine has blue seats but has the leather ones for the VIP section. Itā€™s the star carpet that really ties them together.

u/binglybleep avatar

Iā€™m surprised they havenā€™t updated more of them, sure itā€™s the only reason that one is still open. Itā€™s made it way more popular than the others. Itā€™s a shitty area too, we NEVER get nice things first lol, I always assumed theyā€™d done all of them

So when I worked at Vue the GM at the time was inches from getting all the carpets and toilets redone. Picked tiles, colours, carpets all ready to order etc. then it was scrapped without a moments notice for no reason and ours is an old site, it was originally a Warner Village and has some serious structure problems. The upper management wasnā€™t (and probably still isnā€™t) good.

Do you want my PayPal, zelle, or cashapp for that $5?

I heard if you sit on the end you won't get thirsty.

We now know where the word ā€œWarā€ came from

u/archytheaxolotl avatar

Even if there were 4 cupholders, one on the very end of the row, Iā€™m sure some idiot would come along and not use the one designated to them and so there would be 1 free cupholder 2 seats away from someone without a cupholder lol

Maybe it's intended for at least one couple to be there?

u/Savings_Panda_4424 avatar

Unfortunately its nothing new for me. In Germany nearly every cinema was built like this

ā€œSharing with a bunch of strangers is caring!ā€

u/Own_Crow_4275 avatar

Add a 4th one in the seat

[deleted]
[deleted]
ā€¢

Expectation is that two persons in each row will be really close (dating, married, best friends) and drink from the same cup?

share the cup

Air plane rule applies here final person gets no cup holder but more leg room

I usually watch movies in the cinema.
