Thank you netgalley for this E-Arc.
The combination of thriller mystery mixed with Greek mythology was an interesting factor. The book was also a quick read which I think many individuals will enjoy, however for me it fell a bit flat and at times seemed to drift away from the actual storyline, whilst enticing to read, there were some plot holes with the sister bond and the killer storyline. But an interesting plot overall

The Medusa Murders: a Bay Browning Mystery #1 by Joy Ann Ribar not only introduces a delightful, but sometimes prickly, new character in Professor LL Browning (Bay), but a different concept for cozy mystery readers. Rather than the typical craft or cooking cozy, Ribar effectively wraps mythology, academia, archeology, and a touch of paranormal phenomena together to produce a more than satisfying read. Looking forward to spending more time with Bay.

I went in to this mystery expecting more suspense and fantasy elements, instead I was rewarded with a sweet, cozy, family drama mystery with a touch of romance.

I found the main female lead, Bay, to be relatable and capable. Her lifestyle of tea, books, and walks was dream like an felt like a break into the perfect cozy world, but with murder. The other side characters were down to earth and Cass in specific was one I warmed up to quickly.

The main plot was a murder mystery that the author crafted very well and did a good job keeping the reader attached to it and making it feel like we were seeing clues while leaving me shocked by the end. The finial resolution was a great twist while fitting all the clues and leaving us open for the next novel but not on a cliff hanger. This is a well done mystery that I would recommend to those who enjoy mysteries that are set in the modern, real world, with leads that like settling into their cozy life and are slightly disgruntled to be removed from it for the reason of crime.

I received an ARC of this book at no cost/for free, I am leaving this review voluntarily and all thoughts and opinions are wholly my own and unbiased

I was first intrigued by the title of this book. Greek Mythology has always been so fascinating to me and mixed in with a mystery, this made the perfect pairing.

The Medusa Murders was a hard-to-put-down book for me. I loved so many of the characters and they are written so detailed and unique that you can easily picture them in your mind. At first main character Bay Browning is hard to get to know and she's very closed off. I loved how as she opened up her heart to her sister Cass and Detective Downing, she became a more vibrant and interesting character. At first, you think she lives a boring, colorless life as a college professor. Man, that changes pretty fast as a murder mystery pulls her in and she can't escape. I kind of laughed as Bay wrote down so many details of the mystery they were trying to figure out. I laughed because I was sitting there writing down details to keep everything straight that they were finding.

The best thing about this book is that the Medusa Murderer is not found until almost the very end. I had my suspicions about so many people. Of course, I was way off track so kudos to Author Joy Ann Ribar. There was a lot of action, spine-tingling suspense, and plain-out bizarre happenings. This was a delightful book and I was excited to see it's the first book in a new series. This book needs to be read by people who love a fast-paced, intense, and crime-filled mystery. I know I'll be waiting with anticipation for book two coming out next year.

This was such a disappointment after a great start.
The main character Bay, I never warmed up to her, and by the end, she felt just dumb.
The plot twist came out of nowhere, and I felt annoyed by it.
This had so much potential, and I didn't deliver for me.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I read a lot of crime and mystery stories. Can’t get enough of them. It must be that amateur sleuth inside me. I want to dig deep, follow bread crumbs, guess who’s the bad guy or gal. Sometimes I get so caught up in the book that I want so bad to step into the character’s shoes. Solve it myself. That’s how it was in The Medusa Murders.

Profess Bay Browning is busy getting ready for the next semester when a killer has other ideas. Dubbed Medusa, the serial killer has added Bay to the menu of potential victims to be killed. Along with her grifter sister, Cass. Bay sticks her nose in the investigation, much to Detective Downings annoyance.

There was so much to like about this mystery. The characters. The mix of archaeology and mythology. A truly bad, bad guy. A convoluted not easily solved mystery. And did I mention the characters?

It’s exciting to find and try a new series and author. I had high hopes for The Medusa Murders and Author Joy Ann Ribar delivered.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.

First I would like to thank @netgalley for a copy of this book. It was advanced when they gave it to me but I just got around to it 😂 This book started out really strong. I liked the characters, especially our main character Bay as she is a strong go-getter. I, as someone who has an interest in Greek and Egyptian mythology liked the references to them throughout this book. However, if the reader doesn’t know much about these subjects these references may be lost on them. The final scene where the killer was caught was very lack luster and over so quickly, I really wanted more from it. Being a Wisconsin native it was fun reading a book set in Wisconsin, it helped me picture the setting really well in my mind. This cover art is also absolutely stunning.

thank you netgalley for the e-arc! the medusa murders was a mix of mystery, suspense, and a touch of mythology added in, that was meant to keep you on the edge of your seat. sadly, it was not the case for me.

the author’s writing style is engaging, with plenty of unexpected twists and turn, however, there were a few parts where the book fell a bit short for me. the pacing sometimes felt a bit weird, making certain plot points feel a little forced to me.

i don’t think I will continue this series as it goes on but i guess if you're in the mood for a and light-hearted murder mystery with a mythological twist, this one’s for you.

This was a great in a debut mystery series that has Bay Browning, a college professor of English Lit, helping the police figure out the identity of the serial killer called Medusa.

Bay has extra motivation to solve the crime because she may be the killer’s next victim.

I enjoyed this mystery because along with the murders it included the setting of academia along with developing Bay as a character.

The complexity of the mystery was perfect for me. I look forward to seeing of Bay (and the other characters introduced to us in this book) solving mysteries.

With The Medusa Murders, author Joy Ann Ribar veers away from the cozy mysteries that have so far defined her writing career and turns towards a more gritty and intense mystery that grabs you and won't let go until the end.
This is a book for fans of literature in general and mythology in particular, with the main character Bay working as the head of a literature department and being called upon as an expert on mythology when a series of bizarre murders occur. The mystery is a complex one, but readers not up on their myths need not worry about being left behind. Every reference is skillfully explained and easy to follow.
The character of Bay grows from a somewhat bitter woman quick to snap at people to a more sympathetic, multi-faceted person as the book progresses. The personal relationships are complex, just like many in real life, and the familial drama pulls you in.
I'd also like to say that the cover is stunning!
I look forward to where this series goes in the future!

"The Medusa Murders" is the first of Joy Ann Ribar's "Bay Browning Mystery" series. If you're a fan of modern, hint at, paranormal cozy mysteries, this is a great series for you. It also really adds another layer to the depth of the characters and story if you're familiar with ancient Greek mythological. Due to that I should have known better than to suspect who I did rather than who really was behind everything. I had a feeling it was more than I thought it was based off what I remembered but in the end was like "duh!I should have figured as much!"

I could see this series going multiple ways. I do really hope we get more of Bay and Cassandra's family. There seems to be more secrets there than what was revealed in this first book.

The Medusa Murders — Joy Ann Ribar
Overall rating: 3

“Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.”

The Medusa Murders follows Professor LL Browning (Bay) in a world of mythology, mystery, and murder. From the onset of the novel, Bay is thrown off the deep end—forced into a life with her ex-con sister, Cass, stoic, yet sweet Detective Downing, and brain twisting suspense and murder. The intertwining of a modern setting with an intriguing, ancient mythology, archaeology, and art creates a dynamic adventure!

Honestly, I’m conflicted.

I really wanted to love this book. From the description to the beautiful cover, I was immediately drawn in. I will say that 1. I don’t tend to read mystery books, and this is actually one of my firsts and 2. I didn’t go into the book blind, which may have influenced my perception of the novel.

Things I liked
Bay’s character development. At the beginning of the book, I honestly didn’t like her much. She struck me as a character with a superiority complex, and it felt as if she thought she was better than Cass because Cass is an ex-con. However, Bay’s closed off nature and outward resentment at the beginning allowed for a LOT of character development, and seeing the relationship between the sisters was definitely rewarding.
The characters! Usually I hate seeing too many characters in one novel, but here, they all felt necessary. It was interesting to see how each character contributed to knowledge about the murders. At any given point, I was accusing a different character of murder, which made it really fun to be kept on my toes.
Things that didn’t work for me
The biggest issue for me was the book’s pacing. In my opinion, the book was slow, and some parts felt like they really dragged, which made it hard for me to read through consistently. Some content seemed trivial, and didn’t add to the story. There was a tendency to over explain everyday activities—such as when Bay spent an entire paragraph about the process of her picking up her coffee pods and making coffee. Of course, with this being a mystery book, the author might’ve wanted the highlight to focus on minute details to build up the story. Some parts—like making coffee—seemed to drag, and didn’t add to the actual storyline.

For mystery readers: this book is definitely for you. It’s a lighthearted, yet interesting and engaging story. The additional context with art and mythology adds an extra layer of mystery, and leaves readers questioning the truth and the serial murderer.

The Medusa Murders is an amateur sleuth mystery. Professor Bay “L.L.” Browning is drawn into a serial killer’s world when her coat is found at a crime scene. The killer has an agenda and a style, one that emulates the mythical Medusa turning her victims to stone. Her knowledge of art and mythology turns out to be the expertise the police need.

Bottom line: The Medusa Murders is for you if you like clean mysteries with a cozy feel and centering on art and mythology.

Strengths of the story. The Medusa Murders is classified on Amazon as amateur sleuth, women’s crime fiction, and contemporary women’s fiction. It absolutely is an amateur sleuth follow-along mystery. Crime fiction has become the broader term for stories involving crime, so it fits again. Contemporary women’s fiction is a story of a woman’s growth through the story. This is an element of the story but is most applicable to the secondary stories. While it is not listed as a Cozy, the clean storytelling style (no cursing), lack of on-screen violence, and prominent role of interesting and quirky specialties (classic art and mythology), make The Medusa Murders a good fit here, too.

The setting in a fictional Wisconsin college in the winter is a nice variation on a small town setting. The social complexities of working inside higher ed gives a “peak behind the curtain” from what life looks like from a professor’s perspective.

The story does a nice job of showing Bay having to juggle her work responsibilities and family problems that includes her ex-con sister showing up at her door, while also working to find a link between the murders and mythology.

All in all, it’s a fun read. For those who dig mythology or know their way around classic art about mythology, you will find a lot to dig your teeth into with this one.

Where the story fell short of ideal: One of the first and biggest challenges for authors using amateur sleuth is getting the hero into the story. From the beginning, Bay doesn’t know why she is part of the investigation and, several times, makes credible arguments that someone else who knows more should be doing the work. For me, this undermined the strength and credibility of the character. Ultimately, it doesn’t affect the flow or result of the story.

It took me some time to warm up to Bay. There were times it felt like she embodied the collegiate arrogance she accused others of having. I thought her edges smoothed out in the second half of the book and came to like and respect her.

Plot:
Professor L.L. Browning is spending her winter vacation preparing for the upcoming semester, balancing her winter enthusiasm with the teeming responsibilities of being the youngest Department Head.
When her ex-con sister, Cass, visits unannounced and declares her intention to stay, it brings forth a crescendo of unsettling emotions.
Before she can reconcile with this change, new trouble sprouts elsewhere. When her Lululemon raincoat brings a murder mystery and a grumpy detective to her doorstep, Bay is not ready to stay in the dark. She will do whatever it takes to solve this puzzle.

Thoughts :
The characters didn't look like they existed for the story. Real people in the middle of extraordinary circumstances. From character introduction, development, and chemistry to the detailed setting descriptions, the book conveyed impressive ease. Instead of passive descriptions, the characters get thrown into tricky situations right off the bat, allowing them to show their persona. A quick and energetic start.

The book is a wholesome read with vivid imagery. I loved the Academia and Greek-Egyptian mythology references littered throughout the book. Instead of being pretentious by dropping hints, the book leisurely explained the references, like a guided tour into a cozy, detail-rich world.
The Charming Women's mysticism, the herbal apothecary, and the supernatural intuitions give a feeling that there was much more where that came from.

Sharing Bay's love for winter, books, and all things academia, the most endearing part was the vocabulary. Excreta! Hilarious, it made me laugh. Asserting academic dominance: checked.
Even though the ending felt anti-climactic, it made sense within the context of the book. Rather than forcing an outlandish twist, the book managed to keep it believable.

An in-depth and palpable portrayal of family dynamics and human relationships was a pleasant surprise.
My only complaint is that Downing felt like an afterthought, sorely underdeveloped for a main lead.

For the fans of hint-at-paranormal cozy mysteries, winter reads, slow-burn chemistry, and a blend of mythology + puzzle-solving + family secrets + academia. Read this book!
I am so looking forward to reading the next book. ASAP.

I'd like to thank NetGalley, the author- Joy-Ann Ribar, and BooksGoSocial for this Advanced Readers Copy, but more importantly, for the amazing time I had reading it.

Following her successful Deep Lake Cozy Mystery series, Joy Ann Ribar launches The Medusa Murders, the first in her Bay Browning series which is good news for mystery lovers like me. I found this first book thoroughly engaging. It’s got all of the characteristics of a cozy mystery; fast paced, likeable characters, small town, amateur detective work, and no graphic violence, sex or language. But I would call this “Cozy Adjacent” because rather than cute, light hearted action, this story gets pretty dark and serious but in a fabulous way with loads of tension, secrets, even some mystical elements that make the story especially appealing.

The central character in the series is English professor and recently appointed head of her department, L.L. Browning, also known as Bay to her friends. Two weeks before Fall Semester begins, she arrives home to find her sister, Cass, freshly released from prison having done time for larceny and fraud. Their once close relationship has suffered and Bay has very little trust in her ex-con sister. Still, she agrees to house Cass until she’s back on her feet. Hot on the heels of this bad news, Bay discovers that she is a person of interest in connection with two murders. She makes a tentative truce with the detective in charge of the case, a big grumpy guy named Downing. The case takes a turn when Bay and her sister become the targets of a serial killer known as Medusa. Bay’s deep knowledge of mythology and her best friend’s knowledge of art and iconography prove a boon to the investigation. Little by little, Det. Downing and Bay establish a comfortable working relationship. I particularly want to applaud the excellent glimpse into the academic world and Roman, Greek, and Egyptian mythology. And I adore the attraction between Grumpy Downing and Professor Browning. I highly recommend this book to lovers of mysteries whether they be cozies, whodunits, detective, or even supernatural thrillers.

Author Joy Ann Ribar writes another intriguing mystery! The Medusa Murders releases Nov. 14, and Ribar offers a twisty tale that makes readers guess about a missing jacket and then leaps into a mystery involving family relationships, job-related difficulties, and will-they-or-won’t-they romance.

Ribar, the author of the Deep Lake cozy mysteries, is a skilled writer who delivers drama and tension to readers in The Medusa Murders, her new series.

The main character, Bay Browning, works at a Wisconsin college. Her boss is an authoritarian who lacks boundaries and the workplace drama complicates Bay’s life when she begins investigating why her prized jacket disappeared from a dry cleaner. When a gruesome murder is discovered—it has to do with a head and ties to the book’s title, but I won’t give it away—Bay is dragged headfirst into investigating the mysterious death. When more murders occur, and ancient-symbol clues are left behind, Bay is convinced she’s a target of the killer. She and a detective swap theories about the crimes; their relationship has promise for future stories. Bay’s sister and father also factor into the intrigue, which gives satisfactory depth and backstory to Bay’s motivation for solving the mystery.

Ribar keeps readers guessing throughout The Medusa Murders. The conversations about artifacts and mythology add value to the tale. It’s appreciated when an author weaves history into a story; it’s excellent to learn while being entertained. The main character is gutsy and smart; an amateur sleuth readers will cheer for as she bravely faces danger, family drama, and difficult co-workers.

Ribar has written a great first novel in a new mystery series that readers will enjoy!

I have read numerous books in Joy Ann Ribar’s Deep Lakes Cozy Mysteries, and really enjoyed them, so when I saw that she had a new series out, I put it on my list of books to get, and I was not disappointed!

The Medusa Murders is the first book in the Bay Browning Mysteries, and you may notice that Cozy has been left off of the series, and with good reason. While I think most people who read cozies will still enjoy this one, especially since there are many aspects of the typical cozy mystery, this is a bit darker of a mystery then the hard-core traditional cozy mystery reader might enjoy. But I feel that would be a super low percentage overall.

I really enjoyed this darker mystery filled with family secrets, a serial killer, and even touches of the supernatural, which I’m hoping will come out a lot more in future books. I also really appreciated all the elements of Greek, Roman and Egyptian folklore, and the history of art and iconography that Ribar incorporated into the story. I always love learning new things when I read!
Another aspect that I liked was the riddles on paper and in artwork that the killer left since it gave the story more of a thriller vibe.

My one, little eh moment, that I could have done without, was how often Bay was angry with various people. I’m not saying she needs to be happy all the time or nice to everyone, but many times I saw no reason for it. The other person hadn’t done anything first, but she came at them hard. Was it enough to stop me from finishing the book, no, but I do like to mention (my) good, as well as the bad, in all my reviews.

I think lovers of mysteries (including cozy), suspense, thrillers, and even the supernatural should give the Bay Browning Mysteries a read, and I’m already looking forward to book two!

The Medusa Murders | Joy Ann Ribar | ⭐⭐⭐⭐.25

** Thanks to @netgalley and @authorjoyribar for an e-review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **

An intense mystery with a cozy vibe
A female academic sleuth
A serial killer
Family dynamics, Greek mythology and archaeology, a light romance, a hint of the paranormal!

Have I got your attention yet? Joy Ann Ribar surely got mine.

What starts out to be a cozy mystery, writen with what seems to be the bookish community in mind, soon turns out to be a gritty, thrilling and mind bending thriller.

Bay Browning is an English Lit Professor. With books, hot beverages, long walks galore and a bit of lesson planning thrown in, she seems to be living the perfect, peaceful life. Until, she becomes the target of a serial killer, Medusa, and only Browning's merit, grit and wit can help the police catch the killer.

Browning starts off as somewhat of a flat, annoying character but we see her develop through the course of the mindfully crafted 297 pages. With her peculiarities and idiosyncrasies, she sure stands out.
The storyline is intricately woven and Ribar does well to hold the readers attention till the very end.

However, some of the plot points seemed a bit convoluted and far fetched and it could have done with a bit more nuance.
That said this is only the first book in the Bay Browning series and this surely sets the tone for an exhilarating and exciting series of books from Joy Ann Ribar.
A series that am looking forward to with utmost eagerness.

**This book was read as a part of a Monthly book club, this review reflects the opinion of myself and my club, spoilers below**

In a "slight" divergence from the comfort of cozy cabin mysteries, Ribar brings us The Medusa Murders. A not so thrilling thriller, a not so mysterious mystery, Ribar seems to struggle to depart from her "cozy fiction" roots. The book begins with a solid premise and start. Bay, Lullaby, Lu-Lu, L.L, the professor, or whatever of the numerous monikers she posses begins as a quite unenjoyable character. Unfortunately throughout the pages Bay did not seem to learn or grow as a character. The approximately 30 year old young professional reads as a 60 year old established academic lost in the ways of those younger than her. The only truly enjoyable character comes in the form of the not so implied oracle herself, Cassandra. The mystery was thin and the hints and mythology seemed to only serve the purpose of padding out the pages. The climatic twist felt unearned and uninspired. The authors continued usage of brand and specific store names proves quite jarring. With all this being said I do not believe The Medusa Murders is a horrible book and I do see potential within the Bay Browning series, however this is a quite rocky start and I will not see myself personally tuning in to the next saga of Bay Browning. 2/5 stars.

4/5✨

I have to start my review stating that I received an advanced reader copy through NetGalley.

Medusa Murders is book one in a new series by Joy Ann Raibar.

“Professor Bay Browning has more snake problems than the Garden of Eden in this twisted mystery. The English Literature instructor is busy preparing for a new semester when a serial killer, known as Medusa, bites her quiet life in the behind.
A wild ride ensues when Bay and her grifter sister, Cass, assist a perturbed Detective Downing with the investigation. What else can the sisters do, once they become Medusa's targets? Will the slithering trail of mythology, art history, and family secrets help them catch a killer before she turns them to stone?”

✨For me I truly enjoyed this book. I’m a big fan of a murder mystery. Toss in Greek and Egyptian mythology game on. One thing I didn’t love was the family dynamic, Bay had VERY strong rude feelings towards Cass and it was a lot. Then Bay grew to be caring and protective with little development in the feelings department, the pacing was off for me. I feel like the little hints leading up to the murderer were pretty obvious… but then there was a little twist! ✨

The Medusa Murders is the first in The Bay Browning Mysteries, a series by Joy Ann Ribar, author of the Deep Lakes cozy mystery series. The fast-paced story is full of red herrings, suspicious characters, and snappy dialogue.

The main character is Bay Browning, an academic in a small Wisconsin college. The cast of characters includes family, colleagues, and a very attractive police detective.

Entangled in a murder because her Lululemon coat was switched with a similar one at a dry cleaners, Bay decides to take an active part in the investigation being carried out by the local police. To her surprise, they bring her in as a “consultant” as they search for the murderer, who goes under the alias of Medusa.

An engaging mixture of art, mythology, academia, and fraught family relationships, the book will draw you into Bay’s world and the surprising twists at the end lead to a perfect set up for the next book in the series.

A mixture of cozy, suspense, myth and family secrets marks this introduction to a new series starring Bay Browning a literature professor in a Wisconsin college. A serial killed called Medusa is leaving a calling card filled with mythology references and a link directly to Bay Browning. But Bay does not know the people killed and has no idea why the killer is fixating on her. With the help of her new released ex-con sister who has shown up on her doorstep to live with her and a local police officer, Bay will have to plumb obscure art and mythology reference and deep family secrets if she isn't to be the next victim...

I enjoyed it. It is a good introduction to new characters and their relationships to each other while also being a fast-moving story filled with suspense and mystery. I look forward to more in this series.

I love a good mystery to read on a weekend day. This was an interesting read as there was a mystery but also had some Greek mythology interwoven into the book.
As a start to the series I thought it was pretty good.
This book introduces us to L.L. Browning(or Bay), a brand-new character from this author. Bay is a professor in literature at a college in the Midwest. There is a serial killer who is leaving like calling cards that directly links back to Bay in some way and Bay is called in to assist with the case.
The detective that Bay is called to assist, Downing, and Bay have an interesting relationship which may lead to something in the future books? We will have to see in the next books if there is something there.
And I also really enjoyed Bay's relationship with her sister, who is just released from jail. I really want to see if the sister is going to be good and clean or if she gets worse in the next books!

Joy Ann Ribar is living my dream: she writes in an RV while traveling the USA. Just as Joy ambles America’s open roads, I took my time savoring The Medusa Murders, the first book in the Bay Browning mystery series. This erudite story features an English professor at a fictious college in Madison, Wisconsin. Not only does Professor Browning have to deal with her ex-con sister, Bay also has to guard against becoming the next victim of the Medusa Murderer’s highly symbolic killings. The reveal of a long-kept family secret is key to unraveling the mystery as Bay’s amateur sleuthing is both a help and a hindrance to Detective Downing’s investigation. It will be interesting to see how Bay’s intriguing relationship with Downing plays out in Joy’s future Bay Browning mysteries. Also in the works: Book 5 in Joy’s already well-established Deep Lakes Cozy Mystery Series. So, if you have yet to discover Joy Ann Ribar, now’s the time—there’s a lot to like.

Medusa Murder is a mystery with mythology tied into it all. Overall the book was an easy read. I do feel like the pacing could have been better. The readers were introduced to the case fair quickly and early on but it feel’s forever as we’re picking bits and pieces to put all together. I still myself guessing and trying to piece the different characters together and how they might all tie into the murders.

There also some mundane tasks and such that I felt were not as necessary in the storytelling. I was most anticipating both how the murder plays out as well as Bay and Cass sister relationship how it got to where they are. Unfortunately, both fell a little flat.

It’s still an ok for some simple easy read. Though i don’t see myself continuing the series as it seems to be set up in a episodic way.

It was so much fun to read a murder mystery with mythological references and artistic tie-ins. What a unique idea! I would have loved even more of that sprinkled throughout. I did find some of the connections to the case to be a bit confusing and hard to follow at times, but overall, it was a very interesting story to follow.

I loved the characters and got really into their story development. Bay was so relatable, though I would have been way more scared than she. 🤣 Cass was my true favorite. I was drawn to her and would have loved to have learned even more about her: her past, her plans for the future, etc. I was suspicious of some, but it was not easy for me to predict the mysterious conclusion.

While it felt a tad slow going for me at times, the very twisty ending was worth the wait!

I like amateur detectives being involved in murder investigations. It was refreshing to see an amateur involved with the blessing of the police. Bay's knowledge of mythology is essential to understand the clues. She enlists a friend to help understand art work. There is quite a bit of information about mythology and the world of art included.

An interesting aspect of the novel was the relationship between Bay and her ex-con sister, Cass. I like how Cass became an essential part of Bay's life, even though Bay initially opposed it. The family relationship issue gave a very personal aspect to an investigation centered on academic information.

I enjoyed the novel and will be looking for more from Ribar.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is excellent. I enjoyed it right from the first page, and the intrigue never stopped until the end. It’s a unique mystery with plots and twists all the way through. I will say my one critique, is when it was time for the killer to be caught, it felt slightly rushed. I found myself surprised like I wasn’t prepared for it to be resolving so quickly. However, it didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed this book overall. The writing was very descriptive and I enjoyed the complexities of the personal relationships between Bay and Cass, their father, and all of the characters in between. Very well done! I can’t wait to read Shake-speared in the Park in 2024!

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced e-copy of this book.

The Medusa Murders was a fast paced dark academia mystery with mythological elements.

It took me a while to warm to the protagonist, Bay. Her complicated feelings towards her family made her more believable as a character but there were times when I just wanted her to show some kindness and love towards her sister.

I appreciated that the mystery kept me guessing until the very end, and I loved all the references to mythology, art, and literature.

The storytelling could be awkward at times and there were a few plot holes that could have been handled differently.

Overall this was a fun and satisfying read and was engaging enough for me to want to read the next book in the series.
