🌍 Celebrating Transcontinental Collaboration: Last week marked an exciting chapter in our journey as we proudly hosted UK Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron at BIOM, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand. The event showcased the vibrant synergy between the UK and Thailand in fostering innovation. Our partnership with the UK has been a catalyst for progress, fostering collaborative endeavours that transcend borders. From forging connections with over 150 hospitals globally to forging ahead with upcoming initiatives alongside the NHS, we continue to redefine the landscape of healthcare innovation. As we celebrate our achievements, we extend our gratitude to the Royal Academy of Engineering, an invaluable source of support that empowers entrepreneurs worldwide to realise their aspirations. 🚀 #GlobalPartnerships #InnovationLeaders
Visiting BIOM at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand yesterday, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron was greeted with a showcase highlighting the value of UK-Thai partnerships within the field of science, research and innovation. Of the six partnerships showcased, three came from our Leaders in Innovation Fellowships (LIF) programme, which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary of helping talented #InnovationLeaders from around the globe turn their engineering innovations into impactful, sustainable businesses: - Professor Alisa Vangnai, Chief Technology Officer for BIOM: a synthetic biology company spun out from Chulalongkorn University, which is developing bio-based enzyme powder to remove insecticides from food products, extending their shelf-life and freshness. - Associate Professor Boonrat Lohwongwatana, co-founder of Meticuly Co., Ltd.: a worldwide 3D-printing medical device and bone implants manufacturer, which has partnered with 150 hospitals globally and is soon planning to collaborate with the NHS. - Professor Anongnat (Annie) Somwangthanaroj, Engineering Professor at Chulalongkorn University, who has founded two spinouts: one producing reusable face masks, the other producing biodegradable packaging for food products, both reducing reliance on single-use products. Meticuly was first pitched to the audience and Royal Academy of Engineering panel at Prince Philip House back in February 2016 with a little bit of dramatic turn..... Thank you #LIF, #RAE and #TheNewtonFund.
Eight years ago, February 2016, my life took a dramatic turn. While attending the prestigious Leaders in Innovation Fellowship 2 (#LIF2) program by the Royal Academy of Engineering (#RAE) and #TheNewtonFund in the UK, I received devastating news: the loss of my mother. Grief-stricken but resolute, I stood before the committee the following day, pitching my vision for "AccuFit" – a personalised medical technology solution. Despite the personal turmoil, I secured second place, a testament to the transformative power of this idea. Fast forward to today, as "AccuFit" name has been taken by many, and it has appropriately blossomed into #Meticuly, a thriving medtech company revolutionising bone surgery with 3D-printed, personalised implants with crafted pre-operative planning surgical guides. This journey wasn't easy. The angel round, closed less than a year after that fateful pitch, was a significant milestone, fueled by unwavering belief and sheer grit. But the true impact of LIF2 extends far beyond funding. It's the invaluable guidance I received from my esteemed coaches – David Falzani MBE, Alex Smeets, and Steve Cleverley PhD MBA – and the incredible support from the mentoring and organizing teams, like Mahmoda A. Robin Balser Lino Velev Klaudia Nemcicka. They saw potential amidst the pain, nurturing our vision with expertise and encouragement. Meticuly's success is a testament to the transformative power of grief, channeled into a force for good. Today, we're improving over 1500+ lives, bridging healthcare accessibility gap and pushing the boundaries of healthcare. Now Meticuly has series of products being cleared by USFDA, MHRA (UK), CE MDR (EU), S. Korea's KFDS, and MDSAP. This wouldn't have been possible without the LIF2 program and the exceptional individuals who believed in me, even in the darkest of moments. This post is a tribute to their unwavering support and a beacon of hope for anyone facing adversity. Remember, even in the face of loss, growth and positive change are possible. Let's turn our challenges into opportunities to make a difference. Happy 10th Anniversary LIF! #LIF2 #TheRoyalAcademyOfEngineering #NewtonFund #MedTech #Innovation #Healthcare #Gratitude
