It was a perfect day for golf last Monday, as 52 players teed off in a benefit golf tournament to raise money for First Tee Prince William Countya program that uses golf to teach youth life lessons and leadership skills. Teaming up with experts in positive youth development, First Tee helps kids become good golfers and even better people. Nearly $6,500 was raised for the program.

“This event is meant to celebrate First Tee and what it brings to our community,” said Alan Smith, executive director of First Tee Prince William County. “We had many families, sponsors and alumni show up for a fun day.  This is a day where fun is the best score.”

Thanks to Old Hickory Golf Club another $18,000 was raised for First Tee through their Dennis McCabe golf event that was held earlier this past summer.

The event’s main corporate sponsors were Wegmans, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Geico Insurance-Dave Stinson. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism played a big role in helping to promote the benefit golf tournament and Indigo Golf Group also played a pivotal role by providing a great facility, staff, food and prizes for the event.

“We couldn’t have pulled off the event without the support of everyone involved,” added Smith.

First Tee Prince William County first began providing their curriculum in the summer of 2002. Through its Certification Program, they have reached over 4,000 unique youth within the Northern Virginia area. In addition to their certification programming, First Tee School Program is currently implemented in 36 elementary schools servicing over 25,000 youth in Prince William County on a yearly basis. The First Tee Prince William County Chapter is located at Lake Ridge Park Golf & Marina in Woodbridge, however they offer programming at all three Prince William County golf courses:  Forest Greens Golf Course, Prince William Golf Course and Lake Ridge Golf Course.
