Yamaha updates RX-A4A, A6A & A8A receivers to support HDMI 2.1 4K120, HDR10+

27 Apr 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

About a year after Yamaha announced its second-generation HDMI 2.1 receiver, the company has finally added HDMI 2.1 4K120 and 8K60 support. Other HDMI 2.1 features are still missing.

Yamaha's second-generation RX-A4A, RX-A6A and RX-A8A HDMI 2.1 receivers followed the defective first-generation RX-A2A, RX-V4A and RX-V6A HDMI 2.1 receivers. The new ones are supposed to work properly with various HDMI 2.1 sources including Xbox Series X and PC GPUs.

A firmware update (version 1.65) released by Yamaha this week has enabled 8K60 and 4K120 passthrough on RX-A4A, RX-A6A and RX-A8A. The update also includes support for HDR10+ passthrough as well as other features and bug fixes.

Some HDMI 2.1 features still missing

HDMI 2.1 features such as VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), QFT (Quick Frame Transport) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) are still missing. Yamaha has informed Forbes that these "are all in the pipeline" for a later firmware update. The firmware update can be installed directly on the receiver via the internet: Menu (Connect) -> Settings -> Firmware Update. Alternatively, the new firmware (USA, Europe) can be downloaded onto a USB stick. Barring any new jarring errors or defects, it would seem that we are getting closer to functional HDMI 2.1 receivers.
