Making A Difference: A UHNM Fundraiser

Do you want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money in aid of UHNM Charity and every donation will help.

In July of 2022, my great aunt, Roma, suffered a stroke as a result of a brain aneurysm. Roma was found unresponsive in her home by her husband; she was then rushed to the Royal Stoke Hospital where she has remained since. For around 8 weeks, Roma was resident in the critical care unit where she stayed in critical condition, being sedated and having a tracheostomy. During this time she was fighting a severe chest infection, too. Once Roma was strong enough and her body had recovered a bit, she was brought off the sedation. She was then transferred to ward 228 (neurology) where she was then weaned off the tracheostomy. While on this ward Roma received speech and language therapy as well as physiotherapy; this meant that she was able to get herself to eat again as well as able to talk again. In October Roma was moved to ward 227 (acute rehabilitation trauma unit) where she has continued to receive intense speech and language therapy and physiotherapy. This has meant that Roma has been able to talk a lot better and has even managed to stand up and walk assisted by the physio team and a frame.

From the minute she entered the hospital the staff have been nothing but incredible, not only have they been supporting Roma as their patient, but they have supported her family too. They always do their best to ensure that all of Roma's needs are met; from the critical care unit where they ensured that she was clean and comfortable, to ward 227 where they make sure she is dressed, fed and has plenty of drinks. They are always so happy when they see Roma, and so is Roma when she sees them. The staff across the hospital have just been wonderful as well as hard-working. They are such a credit to the hospital.

To thank the hospital for their amazing support, I have decided to raise money for the UHNM charity as all the funds raised for the charity go directly towards improving the care and experience of the people who use the services that the hospitals provide. Whether it's for equipment, comforts, education, or research which would not otherwise be provided by the NHS. It allows the hospital to provide the very best treatment, care and experience for its patients now and in the future.

Throughout the year, I will be completing different challenges to raise money for this charity. The challenges that I will be doing include walking, abseiling, bungee jumping and more. I hope that by completing these challenges I can persuade people to sponsor me to raise money for an amazing charity.

Challenges:
13th May Jurassic coast 50km walk
8-9th July Peak District 50 - 100km walk

Dates to be confirmed:
160ft Bungee Jump
262ft Abseiling
