💃🏾🥳My Virtual Swedish Fika Night was Almost a Flop! 🤣 This #MondayRx prescription is for me, and I hope you have a sense of humour. Anyone who is around me for a long time knows curiosity and adventure are parts of my nature and sometimes I come up with the craziest of ideas. One such idea was to host a Virtual “Sweden Fika Night” last Friday. The email was sent to some people who had attended my Visioning events. To put things in context, Fika represents a uniquely Swedish way of appreciating the simple joys of life, emphasizing the importance of taking breaks and building social connections. It's more than just a coffee break; it's a cherished social institution that involves taking time during the workday to pause and enjoy a coffee or tea with a sweet treat, often in the company of friends, family, or colleagues. (I was all ready with my kanelbullar aka cinnamon bun). Of course, my intent was for us to reflect on our 2024 goals, facilitate small group discussions and encourage supportive feedback and brainstorming, With a promising number of 15 registrations, I thought the turnout was going to be better than the 6 who turned up. I was initially disappointed, but that feeling soon turned to gratitude. Why worry about those who didn’t show up, instead of being grateful and appreciative of those who did. After all, wouldn’t that be an insult to those who dropped in? The point of this story is that the small numbers allowed us to network, problem-solve and have richer, more meaningful conversations. We shared our experiences, brainstormed solutions, and offered advice and insights to each other. This unexpected twist taught me a few lessons, and I hope they will resonate with you: 📌𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: When things don't go as planned, embrace the situation and make the most of it. ✔️ 📌𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲: Smaller groups can lead to some meaningful interactions and connections. ✔️ 📌𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: Every setback is an opportunity to learn and grow, and a chance to bounce back. ✔️ 📌𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲: Focus on the present and on what you can control. ✔️ Notwithstanding, the next day, I was out participating in a Walkathon in support of The Walnut Foundation, a Prostate Cancer support group. I reached my goal of 5 kilometres, half of the 10K I did last year. At the end of the day, I had walked another 3K, and I felt rejuvenated. The video below tells the story! 😜 Why am I telling my story? Because, it’s great to post exciting and successful news, as I often do, but in reality, not everything works out as planned. Here’s my advice: “Failures” are not the end but rather a new beginning. They remind us to stay flexible, learn from our experiences, and keep moving forward. So, no matter how big or small the setback, remember that every experience is a stepping stone towards achieving your goals. Similarly, not everything has to about business! 🎉Events Are the New Self-care! (according to Eventbrite) It’s official: events are good for the soul. "Events as self-care is a key trend we identified in our TRNDS 2024 report. The very act of attending an event IRL can be just the TLC attendees need... meeting people, learning a new skill, or helping out in the community can be just as nourishing for the mind and body." Although the message is taken from an Eventbrite email, it resonated with me last evening. It was exhilarating to be in a room full of almost 130 coaches at ICF's Toronto 2024 Awards Ceremony. It was great catching up with individuals I hadn't seen in a while, and it was lovely to meet others in real life...looking at you Kadine Cooper, CPCC, Manmeet Narang... and of course, 📚 Michael Bungay Stanier. As owner of two of his books, "The Coaching Habit" and "How to Begin", it was fitting that after all these years, I was meeting him in person! Great to see you Brenda Van Rossum Meena Kaila-Gambhir ⁞ PCC ⁞ CPCC ⁞ HNCP Rose-marie Fernandez and Komal Smriti, Ph.D., PCC, SP Barb Schneider and Leslie Shank. Thanks ICF Toronto for an eventful evening. Yes, I agree that attending events can be nourishing to the mind and body!

We can’t win them all. However, am a bit perplexed that they encouraged her to "apply for positions in the future but none of the currently open positions." Is this a case that she was close but ‘lacked something’? Hmmm… As much as she appreciated the positive feedback on her preparation and interview performance, she is disappointed and frustrated because it has been reposted. Who wouldn't be? My advice: I often suggest to clients that it's OK to host a 'pity party' for themselves when they get news like this. We are human; we are going to feel disappointed, and it's okay to 'grieve'. But, it won't help to stay too long at that party, because there is work to be done! I know it, because I have been in that space. My response to her is to take some time to mull over the situation, and when she’s ready: ✅Have a deeper conversation with the interviewer. (It’s an internal role). Ask them about specific areas they could improve, especially regarding assertiveness. ✅Consider assertiveness workshops to build confidence in that area. (Ask me about that). ✅Search for sales-related courses (LinkedIn Learning, Coursera or Udemy), as a part of her upskilling journey. Then add it to her resume. ✅Reflect on the interview experience to identify strengths and areas for growth. Continuous improvement is important. ✅Stay positive (as best as possible), and continue applying for other positions to gain more interview experience, and ultimately a new job! ✅Find a mentor or a job-shadowing opportunity in Sales. 🙋🏽♀️👷🏽♂️Is a Good Worker Really Hard to Find❓ "When I get to work, the first thing I do is hide... ...because they say a good worker is hard to find!" Is that true? Is a good worker really hard to find? Don't know who came up with this quote, but my family and I had a good laugh when we read it over the weekend. As humorous as this sound, the serious part is that buy into what polls, statistics and the news are saying about the 'shortage of talent', but... 👉🏽Are good workers really hard to find? What if we ask ourselves these questions: 👉🏽Are hiring managers looking for them in the right places? 👉🏽Are they using outdated recruitment practices? 👉🏽Are they allowing certain 'isms' (racism, ableism, ageism, lookism, accent-ism), and other such 'isms' to cloud their better judgement? 👉🏽Are they tapping into the pool of qualified, talented immigrants and internationally trained professionals ready to start on Day One? 👉🏽Are they having career development conversations with their staff before they start looking outside? 👉🏽Are they thinking of upskilling or reskilling their current employees to fill the talent gap? Am asking these questions for the vast array of qualified candidates who are out there waiting for an opportunity! Good workers are everywhere. Search for them in the right places, and give them a chance! This post is dedicated to all the great workers who are hiding in plain sight, and...
