Ankara: Turkey will resume gas exploration in the Mediterranean sea on August 9. The development was confirmed by the Turkish Energy Ministry. The gas exploration will be carried out by Turkish drilling ship Adbulhamid Han.
The ministry in a statement said, "Turkish drilling ship Adbulhamid Han will start a mission in the Mediterranean on August 9 departing from the Mersin port." Notably, Turkey and Greece have been at loggerheads over several issues, including hydrocarbon resources in the Mediterranean.
However, it is still not clear where the drilling will take place. Last week, a senior Turkish official said that the gas explorations will be carried out near the divided island of Cyprus, reported AFP. In 2020, the European Union was about to sanction Turkey over its attempts of gas exploration into contested east Mediterranean waters.
Both the nations are NATO members. Tensions increased between Greece and Turkey over the status of the Aegean islands and airspace violations. Ankara accused Athens of secretly setting up military bases on the islands.
Earlier this year in March, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan cut diplomatic ties with the Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for opposing the sale of F-16 fighter jet to Turkey during a visit to the United States.
The two nations are also at odds over Cyprus. The island of Cyprus has been divided when Turkish forces occupied the northern part of the island in 1974. Turkish forces invaded Cyprus in response to a military coup sponsored by the junta in power in Greece at the time.
After the invasion, the northern third is the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). It is recognised only by Ankara. Meanwhile, the southern part of the island is Greek-speaking and also a member of the EU.
