About Creative Challenge
Creative Challenge is AWESOME’s year-round artist-in-residency program that celebrates the bright young things living in regional and remote Western Australia. Two artists work in each community for a one or two week residency to share their knowledge and skills. The program is process-driven, involving participants in research, conceptual development, and creation of artwork that communicates the uniqueness of their community.

These residencies aim to spark creative play, independent thinking, and storytelling, with our key aspiration being to give voice to young West Australian’s living in regional and remote communities. The program is renowned for offering high quality arts experiences, encouraging young people to consider their individual and collective community identity.

AWESOME takes a community centred approach to Creative Challenge by asking each of the participating schools what areas, themes, and arts modalities they would like to explore and selecting artists based on these needs. Unless you are applying as a pair, AWESOME will pair up artists (usually across different artforms) for innovative and enriching project collaborations.

About the theme "Bloom"

What does the world need more of and how can we make it happen?

In 2023 we’re asking West Australian children to plant seeds for the future. Bloom asks what conditions do we need to innovate, grow, and thrive. And asks how do we cultivate the right environment to make change. Creative Challenge celebrates the imaginative power of young people and extends an invitation to flourish, expand, and bloom.
