Huddersfield Giants boss Ian Watson reveals offer for Super League rival

Last night, Huddersfield Giants announced the signing of former St Helens star Kevin Naiqama.

The Fijian centre has signed a two-year deal at the John Smith’s Stadium, with the likes of Leroy Cudjoe, Ricky Leutele and Toby King all expected to play for the Giants in 2022.

That has left some question marks over whether head coach Ian Watson will go out to sign Wigan Warriors centre Jake Bibby, who has been linked with a move for the past few months.

However, Watson still very much wants Bibby for competition.

“No it doesn’t rule it (a move) out, Jake is someone we have been speaking to and we want that one to come off as well,” Watson said.

“We want that competition for places.”

That signing of Naiqama has also led to people putting two and two together with Ricky Leutele’s future was said to be under a cloud, but Watson wants as much strength in depth as possible in the backline.

“I spoke with Ricky yesterday saying the Kev deal is done and that he is definitely coming but it is no way a replacement for Ricky.

“He has a contract offer, the club have sent an offer again. This is it now and we need to know now what we are doing and where it is going.

“Hopefully Ricky sees the potential of what we are doing and he wants to stay here but we need to get on with it as it is dragging.”

One player, however, who is unlikely to play again for the Giants is winger Jermaine McGillvary who could be out for three months.

“He’s done his MCL so it is better than what we thought. There was a suspicion of an ACL but it will be ten to 12 weeks, but there are no more complications.

“At this moment the likelihood would be very slim for him to return.”
