Founders' Day is one day in the celebrations of Heritage Week and our major event is our Flag Raising Ceremony today.

Arrangements for Heritage Week are planned to have something of value and of interest for everyone. We hope that these will help to make you feel more connected to your school, from Grade R’s, all the way up to our Grade 12s, who will return to be part of our ceremony or old boys from the last century who will be present as well.

Our special celebrations also include traditional sports events against SACS, our slightly older brother school and also our oldest sporting rivals. There are also some newer additions to our programme as we continue to grow and remain relevant. Tomorrow we will host an Old Boys lunch and later in the day a Mini Rugby Festival for U7s and U8s for schools from all over to join in our celebrations.

We celebrate Heritage at Wynberg Boys’ as something that we became part of when parents enrolled their sons into this school and something that has been handed down to us by previous generations of boys who attended the school. If you thought of anything that has survived 181 years, you would expect something old, wrinkled and slow, and showing the ravages of time!

Think of the Wynberg Boys’ Schools as the oak tree in the school song: “Firm its roots and broad its branches” - the older a tree, the bigger and stronger it is. Some oak trees are over a thousand years old. The oldest oak in England is reputed to be over 1200 years old, and the oldest in South Africa is just over 300 years old, so our school is still young and has lots of growing to do!

Enjoy this Heritage week with us as we celebrate our continued growth, click
here for the programme.

As we prepare to take on SACS in our annual Founders' Day derby, we are looking forward to a day filled with exciting schoolboy rugby played in the correct manner as it should be played. After the events of last week, we are making a plea to parents from both schools to spectate and watch the matches in a respectful manner. If there are any grievances regarding the matches played, please direct them to a WBJS staff member who can deal with them. An engagement has been had between the Heads of Sports and Heads of Rugby of both schools to ensure the matches are played without any prior judgment or preconceived ideas of either school. The relationship we have with SACS is a long-lasting and friendly one, and we wish to continue that for many years to come. We are currently engaging with Rondebosch to find ways to improve the relationship and the experiences of our boys and parents when the schools engage each other.

Grade 4 Outdoor Measurement Lesson
The Grade 4s had a marvellous day on Tuesday when they had to follow instructions to make a variety of measurements. Great fun!
Grade 5
This past week, Grade 5A and B went on their outing to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens to learn about Global Warming: understanding climate change and its effects on biodiversity. They learnt a lot and we are sure they will return to Kirstenbosch Gardens to share their knowledge with their family and friends. Grade 5C and D will be having their turn next week.
Book Month
On Wednesday, 17 August, local author Jeremy Daniel visited our school to talk to the Grade 6 boys about his non-fiction series “Road to Glory”. The books in the series are all biographies about South Africa’s top sporting legends as they set out on their journey to become national and international stars. The boys were intrigued to hear about Jeremy’s writing process and enjoy reading his books which are available in the library.
General Knowledge
On Friday, 19 August, we took part in Round 2 of the Inter-schools General Knowledge Quiz at Camps Bay Primary School. We competed against 13 other schools. Our team included: Umar Van Der Schyff, Imaad Ackerman, Imaad Croy, Siwoo Sung, Liam Aylen, Lochlan Versfeld, and Isaiah Rodkin. Unfortunately, our team did not make it to the final round of the quiz, however, the boys had lots of fun and hopefully improved their general knowledge!
Music
Members of our Drumline performed alongside the WGJS Flag Team at the Artscape Schools’ Arts Festival on Monday. The performance was well received with a possible repeat performance tonight!

Art
The Art Department will be doing a newspaper drive, any old newspapers can be brought to Mrs McGibbon.

The Junior Art Club boys have been busy for many weeks making paper mache cats. These have finally been painted and the results are really gorgeous.
Civvies For Charity
Our Term 3 Civvies Day is on Friday, 02 September, in aid of St Luke’s Combined Hospices. St Luke's Combined Hospices has provided specialised end-of-life medical and nursing care, known as palliative care, to people with life-limiting illnesses, for 42 years. They do this through the professional home and in-patient ward nursing support. To support patients, services are extended to families by providing psychosocial, spiritual and bereavement care to patients and their families throughout the greater Cape Town area.
Sport Practices
All sports practices for Friday, 26 August have been cancelled except for the U8 hockey in the morning and afternoon which will still go ahead.
Rugby
This weekend sees us take on our biggest challenge of the season as we travel to SACS for our Founders' Week derby. It promises to be an exciting and hard day of schoolboy rugby to close the 2022 rugby season. The matchday letter can be seen
here, while a map to the SACS fields and instructions for traffic flow can be found here. We encourage parents to arrive early for parking as WBHS vs SACS will also be taking place at the same venue.

Next week there will be practices for teams to prepare for the Seven-A-Side Festivals. Your son will be notified by his coach if he has been selected for a Sevens Team. Boys not selected will not have practice and will need to attend homework hour if not collected by 15h00. Please note that only 10 boys can be selected for each team. The venue and dates for each festival are as follows:
  • Wednesday, 31 August, U10A at Rondebosch TBC
  • Wednesday, 31 August, U11A & U11B at WPPS
  • Thursday, 1 September, U12A & U12B at WBJS
  • Friday, 2 September, U9 (selected boys only) at Bishops
  • Saturday, 3 September, U11A, U12A & U13A at SACS

Mini Rugby Festival
We're excited that our Founders' Day Mini Rugby Festival will be held on Friday, 26 August, after a break of two years. Click here for the programme. Please come and support our U7 and U8 boys. The afternoon promises to be a fun-filled event with a tuckshop and boerewors rolls on sale. We look forward to a wonderful afternoon in true Wynberg spirit!
Hockey
We are very pleased with the great improvement and enthusiasm displayed by all our hockey teams. Last week's highlight was definitely the great win by our U11D team beating Rondebosch 8-0. This week we take on SACS and we wish all our teams well.

Our fixtures next week are against Sweet Valley, the last fixture for the season. One or two of our age groups will still participate in festivals or tournaments, but this will be communicated by the coaches to the boys involved. Please click
here for the fixture list.

Please note that the Friday Goalkeeper practice sessions are done for the season.

We are very excited to be hosting our first WBJS U9 Hockey Festival on Friday, 2 September from 13h00 - 15h00. We look forward to as many of you joining us in support of our future hockey stars!

Once again, our A team boys produced a fine set of results, winning all 12 games against WPPS. This week’s fixtures: both matches have been postponed this Friday.
Cross Country
Well done to all the boys who participated so enthusiastically in our annual inter-house Cross Country event. The Foundation Phase ran on Friday and the Intermediate phase ran their races on Monday. Click on the pictures below to view the album.

There is no inter-school race this Friday. Cross country practices will continue on Monday and Wednesday mornings. These sessions are open to any learner who would like to improve his level of fitness. We meet at 06h45 outside the Gym Hall.
Water Polo
Pre-season Water Polo sessions on Friday, 26 August, will be canceled due to the Mini Rugby Festival taking place. These sessions will continue the following week. Please be reminded that this is an opportunity for our boys to start getting fit for our upcoming Water Polo season.
