2021-2022 Season:

“World News Tonight” spent 31 of 52 weeks as the No. 1 program of the week in Total Viewers on all of broadcast and cable (excluding sports), a historic first for a newscast. “World News Tonight” stood as the most-watched evening newscast for the 6th consecutive season — since the 2016-17 season, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” ranked as America’s No. 1 evening newscast for the 2021-2022 season in all key target demos, Total Viewers (8.145 million), Adults 25-54 (1.470 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.008 million), taking the top spot for the 3rd straight year.

In addition, the ABC evening newscast stood as the No. 1 program of the week on all of broadcast and cable television in Total Viewers on 17 of the 52 weeks of the season, more weeks at No. 1 than any other program this season.

Further, since the pandemic began in March 2020, “World News Tonight” has spent more than 70 weeks as the most-watched program across broadcast and cable (excluding sports).

“World News Tonight” won all 52 weeks of the 2021-22 season as the No. 1 newscast in Adults 25-54, including winning both weeks of an Olympics (2022 Winter Olympics) for the first time in more than 30 years — since at least the 1992 Summer Olympics (the Nielsen electronic database started in September 1991). In addition, “World News Tonight” won 51 of 52 weeks of the season in Total Viewers.

Americans turn to David Muir and “World News Tonight” for breaking news and top headlines each and every night, including Muir’s on-site reports — recently, Ukraine, Buffalo, Uvalde and London — as well as his exclusive reporting on the climate crisis in Madagascar and “The Orphans of COVID” as the United States reached a tragic milestone of one million lives lost due to the pandemic.

Muir was the first on the ground as Russian forces invaded Ukraine, reporting on the war and the millions of refugees leaving the country. He returned to the region twice, including his interview over Labor Day weekend with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at his highly fortified presidential office in Kyiv, as he was ordering a new offensive to liberate the country.

The first American anchor to report from southern Madagascar, Muir reported on the country as it faces a climate-induced famine, raising nearly $5 million for the World Food Programme and its efforts.

On the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, Muir sat down for an exclusive interview with three Capitol officers, detailing the horrors they endured that day.

“World News Tonight” has garnered several awards this season, including five Emmy® nominations, a Polk Award and Christopher Award, among others.
