CONNECTION | CHAIR'S CORNER s we enter August, the focus of the Connection is on the next generation of leaders found in our inaugural 20 Under 40, and the upcoming class of Leadership Bismarck-Mandan.
A recurring theme at the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC and in my professional world in 2022 has been leadership, and specifically, mentoring. As businesses locally and nationally struggle with a shortage of workforce, it is critical to foster leadership that will drive vision and enhance a culture that retains and attracts the best. All aspects of the Chamber EDC’s critical mission require engaged leaders. We are as strong and insightful as the people at the table the day a decision is made. To ensure that those leaders are at the table, the Chamber EDC facilitates the Leadership Bismarck-Mandan program; a 33-year success. Each year, we have quality participants and exceptional programming, but just like a degree doesn’t fully prepare you for a job, training doesn’t fully prepare you to lead. Fortunately, the Chamber EDC is also a conduit to connect emerging leaders with opportunities which expand their role and their abilities. A recent keynote speaker on mentoring provided an obvious but often overlooked insight. While mentors can be assigned, only the mentee can truly choose their mentors. If the assigned mentor, within a company, within a program, is not the right fit in the eyes of the mentee, the value will be limited. When you recognize potential leaders, you train them in your mindset, your culture, but if they are truly the leader you need, you cannot make them a clone because they have their own style. Exposing them to leaders from other industries, with different styles, experience, flaws, transitions them from “trained” to “experienced.” Conversely, as seasoned leaders mentoring someone outside your organization, outside your industry, sharpens your skills and bring new perspective. It builds your reach, and it builds the next generation of business and community leaders. It is worthwhile and rewarding. The Chamber EDC will continue to provide programs, recognition, and networking opportunities for the next generation of leaders to build their knowledge, network, and skills. It is up to each of us to support those efforts by encouraging and supporting participation by emerging leaders within our businesses, and by demonstrating the value and importance by continuing our commitment to the mission of the Chamber EDC: “Advocating for business. Fostering economic growth. Shaping the future of our community.” As we face the continued challenges of business and community, fostering leadership through programs and through mentorship is critical to our future. Currently, I serve on the leadership team as vice president and treasurer of Mandan Rodeo Days. I also occupy a board seat on the Mandan Horse & Saddle Club board of directors and sit on the organizing team for Bismarck-Mandan 1 Million Cups. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I am a servant leader, community builder, and advocate for women-owned small businesses. I specialize in leadership development, marketing, and event production, and I’m dedicated to sharing the collective voice of women business owners to drive economic impact throughout North Dakota. When I’m not working, my hobbies include softball, golf, archery, riding horses and volunteering. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I’m driven by deep pride for my state and local community to create positive change and new opportunities for those who call North Dakota home. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH Like many, I graduated college with a vision of what I thought my career and professional life would be. And, like many, it has turned out to be nothing like I expected. That being said, I’m confident I am where I need to be, and I will continue to lean into the challenges and learning opportunities professional growth provides. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Say yes and set boundaries. Know your core values and use them to help you make decision of where and who to work for. Never stop learning.

I’m fascinated by agriculture, and I enjoy raising cattle with my dad on our family farm. In my free time I enjoy being outside, golfing, playing softball, skiing, working in my garden, and boating with friends on the Missouri River. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Meeting new people, seeing new places and learning new things. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH In a competitive industry like banking, it can be a challenge to navigate the ups and downs of our ever changing economy and regulatory environment all while working to grow business. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I was born and raised in Bismarck and graduated from NDSU with my bachelor of science in civil engineering with a minor in business administration. My family and I love the outdoors, which includes pontooning and kayaking on the Missouri River, camping throughout the summer months, and skiing/snowboarding during the winter months. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Relationships. From the most important relationship with my wife and children to the relationships with people I have made throughout my 36 years in this wonderful community and industry — each one of them is important and valuable. Knowing that I can either create a positive or negative impact on someone’s life by choices I make or how I act is a big responsibility that I do not take lightly. I know that I will not be able to please everyone, and disappointments will unfortunately occur; however, I am motivated on a daily basis to create a positive impact on someone’s life and to value the relationships created. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH The first 5-6 years of my engineering career were challenging in that it took me that long to start feeling knowledgeable and proficient in what I was doing. College never prepares you for what you are doing in the real life, and if it wasn’t for the support and training of my mentor, Michael Gunsch, and all of the other engineering professionals at HEI, I would not be where I am at today and cannot thank them enough! WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Be kind and treat others with respect. Be humble and think of yourself less. Be hungry for success and always look for the next opportunity. Be smart by asking good questions and listening to others. Tell the truth even though it may be tough to say. Be active in your community and strongly consider Leadership Bismarck-Mandan through the Chamber EDC.

TRAVIS DENGEL 31 AVP of Consumer Lending RAILWAY CREDIT UNION “Throughout the years, Travis Dengel has become a member favorite at Railway Credit Union, with many members only wanting to work with him.” COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT I have been involved with the Kiwanis Club of Mandan for four years, serving as President for the 2022 term. Through Kiwanis I have been able to help with the community pancake breakfast, Mandan mayor’s prayer breakfast, help with youth sports programs, as well as youth literacy programs. This club also offers great fellowship and networking opportunities with many other members and community leaders. I have been involved with volunteering at the United Way backpack program, volunteer through the Bismarck Soup Café and The Banquet. I seasonally ring the Christmas bell for the Salvation Army. The Mandan Progress Organization always puts on fun events that I try to volunteer for or at least attend. I also serve as treasurer for the Missouri Valley Chapter of Credit Unions which has allowed me to help fundraise for the Furry Friend’s Rescue, Fill the Bus, and Abused Adult Resource Center. I have ridden the past four years for the Great American Bike Race. The Railway Credit Union youth interaction committee is always fun to serve on as I have been DJ to the annual youth member Christmas party where there are fun appearances from Santa Claus, the Grinch, Clark the Lark, and PeeWee the Penguin. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF Graduated from Dickinson High School and have a bachelor’s degree in business management through Minot State University. I was hired on with Railway Credit Union in 2012 as a teller and worked towards my current position. I am tasked mainly with consumer loan underwriting, but also assist at times with titles and collections. I am a past Chairman and recent graduate of the RCU Emerging Leader program. I spearheaded getting a city ordinance changed in Mandan, to allow urban chicken farming so that residents can now keep up to four chickens in a coop in their yard, as pets or for eggs. My wife and I enjoy camping, riding motorcycle, and traveling. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Being able to enrich the lives of people in the community, my friends, my neighbors through helping their financial position is something that I look forward to everyday. From helping someone with their first car loan, to getting them a motorhome they can travel in retirement is a great feeling. Of course, a good cup of coffee always helps the cause. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH Understanding that a bad day or making a mistake is a learning experience that you take a lesson from and move on from can always be a struggle.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I was born and raised in Bismarck. My wife Skylar is a nurse, and we’ve been married for 10 years. Most of our free time is spent with our four kids and their various activities and events. If I get free time, I enjoy being a color commentator for high school and college basketball games and golfing. I went to St. Mary’s Central High School, University of Mary for business and finance undergrad degrees and a MBA, The University of Notre Dame for executive grad school, and am now enrolled at the CUNA Management School at The University of Wisconsin. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Serving our members and employees and watching them reach their goals. For me, it’s all about the people and the process. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH It can take some time to find the right organization and position that’s the best fit for your skill set and goals. Sometimes you have to make difficult decisions that are momentarily uncomfortable but long term will pay great dividends. Not everybody will share your mentality and that’s ok, but you still need to productively work with everyone because diversity of thought and opinion and be a great strength. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Focus on the people in the company rather than the company. Put yourself in situations that are uncomfortable but will force you to grow and develop the traits that any successful person has like being a hard worker, good listener, and clear communicator.

KAYLA HARDY 35 Human Resource Officer BRAVERA HOLDINGS CORP. “Kayla Hardy is very friendly and well-respected amongst her peers. She isn’t afraid to offer a different perspective on projects or committees.” COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT I’ve been an active member in the Bismarck-Mandan Young Professionals Network for over ten years serving in various capacities, such as the Cinco Celebration planning committee, as a judge to the Top 10 Employer nominations, and participating in the YP Mentorship program, as a mentor to University of Mary Business students. I participate in the Central Dakota Human Resources Association (CDHRA) as a member for over ten years and serving in multiple board position such as Diversity Chair, Membership Chair, and currently serving as Awards and Recognition Chair. When time allows, I am a volunteer instructor for Junior Achievement at local elementary schools, where I specifically enjoy teaching students about financial life tools such as how to save, spend, and donate. Other ways I enjoy getting involved in the community and giving back are by participating in the United Way Day of Caring, raising funds for the annual United Way campaign, and volunteering at the local Heaven’s Helpers Soup Café, and the Great Plains Food Bank. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I grew up in Bismarck-Mandan with a brother, three sisters, and four wonderful parents. I began my college career at Minnesota State University Moorhead for teaching, while I was a part-time Teller at a local bank. During my time at the bank, I found a passion for the financial world and changed my major to Business Administration. While working in banking, I found an even deeper passion for people and discovered Human Resources and accomplished a bachelor’s in business administration and bachelor’s in Human Resource Management. Continuing in the financial industry, I received my first Human Resources position and have never turned back. I have a passion for working with people, building relationships with people, and problem solving. I continued my education in Human Resources by obtaining my Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Society of Human Resource Management — Certified Professional (SHRM-CP). When I am not working or volunteering, I enjoy reading, journaling, movies, and traveling. My husband and family have been my biggest supporters through my education and career endeavors. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Building relationships with people and being able to listen. I enjoy career path planning and finding ways to motivate employees in ways outside of the box. I have a desire to make a positive impact when working with people, even if it’s a short daily phone call. I find that it’s easy to become negative, but by being positive I can be the person that makes someone’s day. At the end of the day, making my husband and family proud of who I am today is my main motivator. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH The greatest challenge has been to establish boundaries between work, home, and volunteer activities, and knowing when to say “no” even when you don’t want to. Another challenge I have personally faced and see daily is having patience in your career path for growth. Learn as much as you can, gain experience, be a team player, and the rest will fall into place.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Don’t go into a career for money. If you have passion for what you do, work hard, and have patience, success will follow. Find what you love to do and make it your career. Stay determined, even if at times you want to give up.

Senior Vice-President, Talent Acquisition and Communications KLJ “In 2011 Emily Johnson undertook one of the largest marketing and communications initiatives that a company can go through — rebranding. Johnson successfully led the company through a full rebrand which included brand positioning, a new graphic identity, and the recommendation to formally align the company name from Kadrmas Lee & Jackson to KLJ.” COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT I am a long-time supporter of the Great American Bike Race (GABR) having served as captain or co-captain for the past 10 years on KLJ’s Wheels of Steel team! I also enjoy volunteering for STEAM-related events where we can introduce kids to the amazing world of science, technology, engineering, art, and math! This year I also coached youth soccer for the first time — something that was extremely rewarding and a great experience to share with my daughter. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I am a Bismarck native and I love to read, write, and talk to anybody! I am extremely fortunate to be surrounded by an amazing family, great role models, strong supporters, and people who encourage me to pursue any goal, no matter how crazy. In addition to my passion for KLJ and the great work we do, I am an athlete, a cyclist, a wife, a mom, a sister, a mentor, and I love to fish — I can back the boat down a ramp, but I am less enthusiastic about baiting my own hooks! WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I am motivated by the idea that good communication creates important change. When ideas, concepts, and action are communicated in a clear, concise (and even fun) way, great things can happen. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH Any challenges I have had in my path are simply part of the path — and what has provided me the experience to continue to learn, grow, and influence in different parts of my life. Having a wildly supportive family and strong role models means I had opportunities to fall and get back up again many times, and each time, adding a new tool to the toolkit! WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Be curious and ask all the questions. Find people who listen to your questions and not just answer them, but ask you questions, so you can form your own thoughts, ideas, answers, and opinions. Looking at opportunities and challenges with a curious mind keeps you open to learning, growing, and finding new ways to define success.

THEA JORGENSEN 36 AVP Member Welcome Coordinator TEAM RED, WHITE & BLUE; Owner THEA WARD FITNESS; Human Resource Specialist NORTH DAKOTA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD “Thea Jorgensen’s passions really lie with the veteran community, refugee community, and anything to do with mental health/suicide prevention; but my sister is a huge advocate for our homeless, our domestic violence survivors, and other marginalized communities.” COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT I am currently the ND/SD/NE State Coordinator for Team Red, White & Blue, overseeing all chapters, volunteer leaders and members in those states. I also volunteer on the virtual team for Team RWB as a Functional Fitness Coordinator. I completed my fellowship with the Travis Manion Foundation at the end of last year and continue to be a Character Does Matter Mentor. I do a lot with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention; everything from their Walk and Program committees, working at both the state and national level to speak to our legislators and advocate for mental health/suicide prevention, related issues and of course presenting any of the suicide prevention programs they offer to schools, churches, employers or anyone that will have me. At a strictly local level, I sit on a number of boards. I am the Vice President for the nonprofit Fit 4 Victory and a board member for both Bismarck Global Neighbors and the Bismarck Parkinson’s Support Group. I was appointed to the City of Bismarck’s Human Relations Committee, the ND State Commission on National and Community Service, and the ND Task Force for Military Interests in North Dakota. I am a member of both the American Legion and the AMVETS. Since moving to Bismarck in 2009 I have tried to stay as active in the community as possible and have found my true passion to lie in the veteran, refugee and mental health communities.

CONNECTION | FEATURE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I was born and raised in Minot but have called Bismarck home since 2009. It was in 2009 I met my (now) husband and he is always supportive of everything I decide to do. I am a very proud auntie to Brantley and Bailey and love to spend time with them. I own Thea Ward Fitness, a private personal training studio where I train everyone from Vietnam Veterans to the former Miss America. It is here where I have my office for Team Red, White & Blue. My job is to connect our new veteran members to the programs we provide, but also connect veterans who have unmet mental health needs to care in their communities. I enlisted in the military when I was 27 and spent the majority of my time as a Public Affairs Specialist. That role allowed me to travel the world and has allowed me to get to know our Families of the Fallen over the past seven years. Getting to be a part of that family and to be able to hear and share the stories of those who have served with connections to North Dakota has been the absolute highlight of my time in the service. If I am not working I am typically volunteering. I struggle with depression, anxiety and in the past even suicidal ideation. For me, knowing I am able to make an impact in my community has been the biggest protective factor and way to manage my mental health. But in my free time, I love watching football with my husband, hiking, rucking, or running on trails, listening to Hanson, studying French, working towards my continuing education, and traveling anywhere and everywhere.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Age is not nearly as important as we think it is. I was very hard on myself for not knowing what I wanted to do with my life right out of high school. Curiosity and love of learning are two of my top character strengths and I was really interested in a number of things. I enlisted in the military when I was 27, started my own business when I was 30, and was offered a job with my dream nonprofit when I was 35. I would also add, don’t be scared to know what you bring to the table. When asked what I bring to the table another candidate doesn’t — I can honestly say it’s my belief in our ability to change the world. Find those things or characteristics that are so true to you, that no one can replicate them. And lastly, as Jim Collins said, “Get the right people on the bus." WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? The belief that every single one of us can change the world. We were all meant to do something that only we can do and my genuine hope is that through service, compassion, and action that I can make an impact. A lot of times people think changing the world has to be this huge thing that is accomplished, but in reality we can start in our own backyards. Another huge motivation for me is my niece and nephew. I want them to know what hard work and compassion look like, that by being curious and brave amazing things can happen. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH The decision to open my own fitness studio in 2015 was pretty impulsive. I didn’t really know anything about running a business. So realizing I was on my own for finding new clients, marketing, and accounting. The biggest challenge there was aligning myself with the right people. 2020 on, has also been a pretty big challenge. From being closed to the rise of virtual options the fitness industry is changing even more rapidly than normal. So really trying to stay relevant but also true to myself has been a challenge. It has required a lot more creativity than in the past. A lot more time on social media and producing content. I even added a 16th certification to my resume, a Virtual Coaching Specialist to help me move in the direction of the industry.

Cam Knutson has both.” COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT My favorite aspect of real estate development is finding solutions to enhance the future of the community through the projects our company focuses on. Residential developments, including Elk Ridge and the area around Hawktree Golf Course, focus on amenities to create a strong sense of place. Boden, a new infill and mixed-use development has been designed to provide options for both commercial and residential needs. The commercial aspect is to create an additional option for small business owners wanting to make the leap into ownership of their own professional office building. Recent real estate services have included assisting Mandan Public Schools with site identification and a successful land purchase for their new high school. Knutson Companies is now providing brokerage services to Mandan Public Schools to assist in selling outlots around the new high school with a goal of bringing synergistic businesses to the area that can benefit the future generations of students, staff and the Mandan community. In addition to companies focus on real estate, I also serves on the Board of Directors for Starion Bank, Sanford Health Bismarck-West Region, and the University of Mary’s Board of Regents. I am also is co-owner of Sanctuary Events Center in downtown Fargo and several other business ventures. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I was born and raised here in Bismarck where I attended school at Solheim, Wachter, and St. Mary’s High School. I attended NDSU and spent nearly a decade in Fargo. During this time I worked for Kilbourne Group, a Fargo based real estate development company. I returned to Bismarck in 2018 to launch a real estate development and brokerage company and to assist in the established family real estate business.

CONNECTION | FEATURE WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I’ve been fortunate to have been surrounded by incredible mentors, coaches, and teachers throughout my lifetime. There are countless people that I would need to thank for the impact they have made on me which has served as the biggest motivator to work hard, continuously learn and focus on ways that my work can benefit the community. The positive response and appreciation from those we serve has also been a major motivator to keep working hard and pushing forward, regardless of how large the challenges may be. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH The primary challenge with real estate development is the variety of viewpoints that exist for how development should be pursued. The process of bringing a project to final approval and then completion usually requires a significant timeline commitment that can take years. The economy and market needs can vary dramatically during this period so there is a great deal of balance that is required to meet the needs of those we are working to serve along with the rest of the community. Fortunately, every project comes with new learnings that help us improve on the next ventures we take on. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Get out of your comfort zone, become involved in as much as you can and never stop learning and growing. Surround yourself with friends and mentors that will push and inspire you to continue to improve. Lean into the people you can work through challenges with and celebrate wins alongside. For 13 years I have gathered with a group of leaders one weekend a year where we disconnect from technology and cell phones and dive deep into the highs and lows we have experienced during the previous year. We also do goal setting for the year ahead, holding each other accountable to push ourselves in various facets of life such as business, family, faith, health, and community contribution. This group has been a gamechanger! I would encourage others to seek out opportunities like this.

Moving on from an engineering career that I enjoyed and was heavily invested in was a risk, but it has been one of the best professional decisions I’ve made.

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH A big challenge for me has been work/life balance. I had three children in five years, all while trying to grow and advance in my career — and that’s not easy. I still struggle to find that work/life balance, and it’s something I’ll probably always be working on. I want to give 100 percent to my family and 100 percent to my career, but that’s not always possible, and sometimes you have to choose. I would say another challenge has been working hard to gain respect even if you are sometimes the youngest one in the room. It’s not easy, but I’ve had tons of great role models and mentors to guide me along the way! WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Never give up. No matter what trials and tribulations occur in your career (and there will be many along the way), it’s never too late to grow and improve. Also, don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone! I always find the most growth in myself when I push myself to be uncomfortable. Go above and beyond, take that extra step, and really stretch yourself — the rewards will come back tenfold.

In 2013, I started my credit union career with First Community Credit Union as a Marketing Specialist. I worked in that role for three years, before leaving briefly to work at the Credit Union Association of the Dakotas as the Vice-President of Communications. In 2018, I returned to FCCU to work in my current role, Communications Manager. In my spare time, I enjoy riding horse with my family on our farmstead outside of Mandan, barrel racing and being in rodeos. I also enjoy singing for our church, spending time with family back on my parent’s ranch, working on crafts and volunteering in the community. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? I’ve had a lot of mentors and leaders who have changed my life in more ways than I can count. They helped me grow, showed me kindness and how to lead with grace. The thought of being that leader for someone else, that motivates me. I can only hope to be a role model and a leader for others in both our company and the community, someday. Additionally, growing up my parents taught me the importance of hard work and volunteerism; a huge motivation of mine is to lead by example and teach our son those same values. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH Just a few months out of college, I lost what I thought was my dream job due to funding cuts within that company. Learning how to move forward, believe in my abilities and trust that the next step I took would hopefully be the right one, was a hard mental challenge. I think another challenge I’ve had in my career path is simply learning that you won’t be everyone’s cup of tea and you won’t be the smartest person in the room, all the time. In my role, learning how to properly communicate with people who have differentiating opinions and personalities can be a humbling, challenging experience. Having to learn and accept these things in my role, has provided some really hard lessons, but lessons worth learning. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Integrity and hard work are everything. Be true to yourself, own your mistakes and be willing to learn from them and learn from others. It can seem really intimidating when you’re first starting out and don’t have a lot of experience, but everybody starts somewhere. Step outside your comfort zone, meet new people, give back to your community and finally, be kind to everyone you meet. You never know how that new connection you make can help you within your career path.

We’ve had to get innovative with how we approach projects, processes, and really business as a whole. While this has been a challenge, I think it’s also one of the reasons for our success. We’ve had to constantly push ourselves to be better, allowing us to adapt and grow quickly. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? That no matter your age, you can make an impact. There isn’t a certain degree or certain amount of experience that you need to make an impact on both your business and the community, you just need to jump in and go for it. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I am originally from New England, N.D., and after graduating attended Dickinson State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. After receiving my undergraduate degree, I attended the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine and graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2009. I then moved to Bismarck and started practicing at Bridging the Dental Gap a non-profit community dental clinic. In 2011 I joined Nelson Family Dentistry and over the past decade have become co-owner. The practice has now transitioned to what is today known as Polished Dental. I am married to Brock Schoch and together we have three children Boston, Lincoln, and Elin. I love reading, jogging, being outdoors, and I love supporting my kids in all their activities. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?
1. Being a good mom, a good wife, and a kind person. I remind my kids everyday that “The most important thing in this world is to be kind.” 2. To be a good leader and trying to lead by example, having a positive state of mind, being okay with change and understanding that it is necessary for growth. 3. Treating every patient as if they were my own family member and being compassionate to every patient and their unique oral health.
CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH I would say the typical challenges that come with education, getting into dental school, and running a business. However, the year 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic was a difficult time as a business owner and a healthcare provider. If our profession learned anything about that time it is that dentistry is very essential. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Don’t be afraid to work hard, study, learn and sacrifice to get what you want, if it is something you are passionate about it will be so worth it.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF Received my Master of Science in business from the University of Mary in 2016 and then opened the first business (GJ Subs – Bismarck) in 2016. Since then, my wife and I are involved with seven businesses along with starting our beautiful family all during the same time period. We currently employ 91 wonderful people in the Bismarck and Mandan communities and we look forward to continuing to create jobs in North Dakota. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Creating opportunity for others and opening businesses that I am passionate about the product or service we offer. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH Navigating the difficult climate of inflation and other challenges that are out of our control. Rising cost of goods sold and labor shortages have been our top focus lately and we have an amazing leadership team that does a fantastic job working through these challenges every day. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? For any aspiring entrepreneurs out there, don’t focus on the fact that you don’t have the capital for whatever venture you are pursing. Instead, focus on your business plan and the strategy to execute that plan. Also, always surround yourself with like-minded people that push you in a positive way and bring value to your vision. The rest will fall into place if your idea has a place in the market, if you have the right connections, and if you have the ability to execute your idea at a high level.

Banking is a relationship business, and Weisbeck is a natural fit.” COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Community involvement was part of my upbringing. While growing up, I spent a lot of time volunteering at our local church, helping with maintenance, repairs, and landscaping. I carried these experiences with me through college and to my career at Starion Bank. One of Starion's core values is a strong focus on our local communities. I’ve helped at a lot of small events — games, parades, fundraisers, etc. — in my 15 years here, but I’ve also been fortunate to be part of some larger projects, like the Starion Sports Complex in Mandan, as well as other large sponsorship projects like Starion’s donation to the Bismarck Cancer Center expansion. The Starion Sports Complex was completed in 2017 and is home to Mandan’s football, track & field, hockey, and gymnastics programs. The 84,000 square-foot complex provides a comfortable, exciting venue that attracts competitors and viewers statewide. Bismarck Cancer Center recently completed their expansion in March 2022. Starion donated $250,000 to the expansion to help the center renovate the existing facility and add a second floor. The new area includes additional exam rooms, family counseling rooms, treatment equipment, and a more comfortable, welcoming space for families to await their appointments. Outside of my banking career, I volunteer to help several local associations. You’ll see me at numerous local events sponsored by University of Mary and the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC. I am a member of the Mandan Growth Fund Committee, Bismarck State College Foundation Board, Sanford Health Foundation Board and North Dakota Bankers Association Board. In the past, I served on the Bismarck Mandan Development Association Board and helped with the merger of the BMDA and Bismarck Mandan Chamber of Commerce into a single entity, the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC.

CONNECTION | FEATURE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I grew up on my family’s farm near Herreid, S.D. Through my work on the farm, and our strong Midwestern values, I learned the importance of service and treating customers as if they are family. To further my education, I attended University of Mary and earned a degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Management. While I was there, I was fortune enough to play football and run track for the Marauders, where I learned essential lessons about teamwork and communication. I also worked a retail job and got my insurance license to help support myself through school. It was in retail and insurance that I discovered I love working with people. I enjoy meeting new people, learning about their personalities, and using my knowledge and experience to help them. After graduating from college, I left insurance and went into banking. At Starion Bank, we offer not only personal and business banking products, but also insurance and investment products. I love showing up here every day and building relationships with coworkers and clients. Nothing compares to helping my coworkers grow as bankers, and helping our customers buy their first home, expand their business, and protect what matters most in their lives.
CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH As a market president, my day-to-day challenges are making sure that everything we do benefits our customers, communities, and employees. We do keep our eye on competing banks, but our focus is always on the customer in front of us. Avoiding the many distractions that can pull you away from the issues at hand is always a challenge. Personally, my biggest challenge is time. Overseeing all branches in the Bismarck-Mandan area, volunteering in various roles, and spending time with my family all require me to carefully budget my days, weeks, and seasons. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Envision what you want, and then set goals to get there. You can’t attain anything if you don’t set a goal first. Be confident, yet humble, develop a good work ethic and don’t sweat the small stuff. Just set your goals and go after them. When managing people, always listen first. To be an effective leader, I need to understand what my staff is thinking. That doesn’t mean I implement all of their ideas. But it goes back to remaining humble by listening and learning, and then having the confidence to make tough decisions.
My career at Starion began as a business banker in 2007. After years of experience helping local businesses and agribusinesses, and attending the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado, I was promoted to Mandan Market President. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I joined the workforce at age 13, teaching dance to young students, and I continued doing that until I graduated from college. The summer of 2002, I became Miss North Dakota. This was a great experience, traveling across the state, competing at Miss America and speaking to hundreds of students and organizations. In 2005, I graduated from the University of Mary with a Bachelor of Science, Cum Laude, with a focus in biology and chemistry. After graduation, I decided to take some time off and traveled to Australia and New Zeeland on a work visa, working in various places along the coast. Upon returning (with little money left) my dad offered me a job that I thought would be temporary, but I dove in and in 2016 I became a second-generation business owner. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Studies show that 60 percent of the U.S. workforce is employed by a family-owned business, yet just under 20 percent of US companies are family-owned. When only 12 percent of family business transfer to third generation, the motivation today is a combination of creating opportunities for current and future team members while continuing to build our family legacy. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH Working in a male-dominated industry, I have felt two challenges throughout my career; one being a woman and the other being young. I watched my mom attain success in her career and she set an example of what it takes to be a respected woman in business. I made it a point to educate myself and get several industry certifications turning this challenge into an opportunity. I also worked in the field to have first-hand experience so I could help answer questions and give guidance to our team and customers. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? Whether you are dealing with a customer or an employee, do the right thing, always. I remember Vern Dosch saying this at a Young Professional event and it stuck with me. I believe it will pay off in the long run, your business will thrive and at the end of the day, you will rest easier too.

He is an asset to Bravera with his strong industry experience, organization, positive attitude, and company engagement.” COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Most of my community involvement comes from my work as a volunteer board member for Tracy’s Sanctuary House. Tracy’s Sanctuary House is a local hospitality house that was started by my wife’s family, in memory of her mother. With my wife being Executive Director of the house I also get to help with some of the events, including the Winter White Party, Ice Cream Social and the TSH Captain for United Way Day of Caring. I like to keep involved in various other community events, many through the Chamber EDC and Downtown Bismarck. Until recently, I had served as a Partner Liaison for the Bismarck Mandan Young Professionals Network for the past five years. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF I was born and raised here in Bismarck. I moved to Fargo to attend North Dakota State University. I graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and moved back home not long thereafter. I have been in the banking industry for over 15 years, 11 of those have been spent with my current employer, Bravera Bank. Personally, I have been married to my wife for 11 years and we have two children. Majority of my time out of the office is spent with the three of them. Outside of spending time with family, my main hobbies would be golf and hunting. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? My biggest motivator would be growth, whether that be personal or professional. Learning new things and taking on challenges as a father, a husband, and in my career has been the most important motivators in my life. CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER PATH My biggest challenge was finding the path I wanted to be on. I started my banking career when I was in college thinking that was where I wanted to grow once I graduated. However, my opportunities for career growth seemed limited at the time. I decided to do something different for about a year until I realized it wasn’t for me and that I missed the banking industry. Luckily for me this different path I took led me back to Bismarck, and my next banking opportunity came with my current company. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? The best advice I can give is to not be discouraged if you don’t know exactly what you want to do. Figuring out the right path for you can take time and some mistakes. The most important thing is that you are continuing to learn and grow as you try to find that career path that is right for you.

I started out as on an outside salesperson and transitioned into Management. I have since been the manager for the past 14 years. I have been married for 15 years to my wife Sue, I have two sons, Braydyn and Talyn, two step daughters, Jalen and Jordan, one son-in-law, Eric and one granddaughter, Everleigh.

Briefly tell us the history behind Builders FirstSource and how you got started. A: Builders FirstSource in a national company that has over 500 stores across the united states. Here in Mandan we started out as a small lumber yard years ago called Great Plains Supply. We have been through several name changes but the one thing that is consistent is the employees that work at BFS. Most of the employees have 10+ years with this company.
CONNECTION | MEMBER PROFILE How has the growth of Bismarck-Mandan impacted Builders FirstSource? A: The sales have definitely gone up over the past several years. The demand and need for housing remains strong in the Bismarck Mandan area,, the inventory of houses for sale is very low. We have also seen an increase in home remodels over the past couple years with people not being able to rebuild so they make the decision to add on or redo a kitchen or bathroom. What trends are taking place in your industry? A: We are seeing new home transition from a traditional home to a more modern style home. Customers are switching up their kitchens, going with the solid surface counter tops, they are using more two-tone stain and paint colors through out their homes. More homes are also using painted interior doors and trim rather than stained wood. Have there been any monumental changes within your industry that you’ve had to deal with? A: Dealing with the pandemic has created a whole new set of struggles in our industry. We struggle with increased pricing and lead times on many products. Customers have to do their homework and plan ahead once they decide to build. Some of the product take 1216 weeks to get here, which makes it much tougher for the builder to plan out the building process. What does the future of Builders FirstSource look like and the industry as a whole look like to you? A: Despite all the economic factors and challenges (rising inflation, supply chain, increased labor and material costs) the future looks bright for Builders FirstSource. The demand for housing remains strong for BismarckMandan, across ND and the USA as a whole. America simply has not built enough homes over the last decade, and it is going to take several years to add enough inventory to balance out the market. Builders FirstSource became a member in 1989, why do you continue to renew? A: The Chamber EDC is a great organization and I like what it stands for. I have met many new people across the Bismarck Mandan area through the chamber. What should other Chamber EDC members know about Builders FirstSource that may assist them? STAFF ATTENDS STATE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE Chamber EDC staff attended the Economic Development Association of North Dakota’s (EDND) Summer Conference in Beulah. Conference topics included carbon capture’s impact on the state, what new pipelines mean for communities, and an update on the Summit Carbon pipeline. There was also a presentation from Bakken Energy CEO, Mike Hopkins, and a tour of the Dakota Gasification Company’s facility north of Beulah. Nathan Schneider from the Chamber EDC serves as a board member for EDND.
BUSINESS ASSISTANCE PROGRAM OF THE MONTH: COMMERCIAL REMODELING PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION Both the city of Bismarck and city of Mandan have a commercial remodeling property tax exemption available for qualifying commercial buildings. In both communities the exemption is for a maximum of 3 years and limited to the value added by the Assessor for completed eligible projects. In Mandan the building must be at least 25 years old and in Bismarck the building must be 30 years old. The property owner must apply for the exemption and be approved for the exemption with the Assessor’s office prior to commencement of the improvement. Commencement of the improvement means the start of any remodeling, pouring of footings or foundations. The moving of dirt is not considered the commencement of improvement. TAX DEPARTMENT RELEASES 1ST QUARTER FIGURES
CHAMBER EDC SEEKS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST
In June, the North Dakota Tax Department released the 1st quarter taxable sales and purchases figures. Overall, the State of North Dakota reported a 13.71% increase from 1st quarter of 2021. Locally, Bismarck was even with 2021 1st quarter numbers reporting a 0.50% decrease, meanwhile, Mandan reported a 3.71% increase from the same period in 2021. Combined, Burleigh and Morton counties reported a slight 0.41% increase. To see these figures and all the Economy at a Glance numbers go to the Chamber EDC website.
The Chamber EDC is currently seeking an outgoing, energetic person to fill its Economic Development Specialist position. COMMERCE LAUNCHES FIND THE GOOD LIFE CAMPAIGN Commerce announced the latest campaign efforts behind the state’s comprehensive workforce initiative geared at assisting those interested in relocating to North Dakota. Centered around the revamped findthegoodlife.com website, Find the Good Life in North Dakota has been refreshed and is the latest talent attraction and marketing campaign dedicated to informing people outside of the state about job opportunities and the quality of life in North Dakota, with an emphasis on connecting people to opportunities in rural areas. The website now includes a relocation help desk that provides a personalized relocation assistance service for prospective residents.

CHAMBER EDC'S NEW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TRACKS The Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC has created a series of professional development ‘tracks’ for its members. Initially, three tracks have been created: first-time managers, soft skills and business operations. The first-time manager’s training is available thanks to a partnership with Dale Carnegie and will be offered quarterly throughout 2022. The ten-week program is a virtual course, facilitated by Dale Carnegie staff, which will provide Chamber EDC members with tools for success as they become leaders for the first time. The other two tracks offer a unique combination of content from the Chamber EDC, University of Mary and Bismarck State College (BSC). Previously, the Chamber EDC had hosted professional development sessions through its Business Development Series.
Those that fit under the business operations and soft skills tracks, have been included and are available for Chamber EDC members to watch on their own schedule. Additionally, professional development offerings from both the University of Mary and BSC that fall under these tracks are now available to Chamber EDC members at a discount. The Chamber EDC will look to add even more professional development content under these initial three tracks and more in the future. Whether that be through related content developed by partners in higher education or through original content generated by Chamber EDC members and offered through the Business Development Series. ANNUAL FILL THE BUS EVENT TO HELP STUDENTS IN NEED
Car enthusiasts were invited to get behind the wheel of an electric vehicle (EV) at the EV Tailgate Party on Tuesday, June 28. Hosted by Capital Electric Cooperative and the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), the free, family-friendly was held in the parking lot west of NDDOT on the North Dakota capitol grounds.
For the 26th year in a row, iHeart Media along with community business and individual donors, have assisted students in need with the Fill the Bus Event.
The EV Tailgate Party aimed to raise awareness of the availability, capabilities and benefits of EVs. Attendees got an up-close look at some of the latest EVs on the market and had an opportunity to visit with EV owners about their experiences. “Global automakers have committed over $500 billion toward the research, development and marketing of electric vehicles. Our government is committing over $5 billion to expand the nationwide charging network. And now, Rivian and Ford have started delivering EV trucks. We are here to share that information with our members,” says Capital Electric Energy Services Manager Josh Schaffner. “Major changes are coming in the transportation industry and Capital Electric is happy to partner with the NDDOT to help make these changes a success.

CHI ST. ALEXIUS HEALTH RECEIVES PRIMARY PLUS STROKE CENTER RE-CERTIFICATION FROM DNV
CHI St. Alexius Health has been re-certified by DNV as a Primary Plus Stroke Center, affirming the hospital’s readiness to handle a full range of stroke-related medical problems.
“We are proud of our Stroke team at CHI St. Alexius Health for delivering the highest quality and safe care to our stroke patients,” said Dr. Shiraz Hyder, neurologist and medical director of the Stroke Center at CHI St. Alexius Health. The Stroke center was the first in the region, receiving its first certification in 2008. The thrombectomy (clot retrieval) capability was added in 2012. According to Brannigan Hamrick, RN Stroke Program Coordinator “The Stroke team at CHI St. Alexius Health consists of a collaboration of physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff who work closely to reduce variation in clinical process, improve efficiency, and strengthen program structure to ensure best outcomes”.
The DNV Primary Plus Stroke Center Certification is based on standards set forth by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association, and affirms that the medical center addresses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes. “Achieving certification shows commitment to excellence,” says Patrick Horine, President of DNV Healthcare USA Inc. “And it helps demonstrate to your community that you are performing at the highest level.” According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is a leading cause of death, killing nearly 130,000 people each year, and is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability. Because stroke or “brain attack” affects blood flow to the brain, rapid and effective treatment can save lives and provide the best chance of limiting the extent of long-term damage.

During cancer treatment, patients are given very specific and targeted amounts of radiation in order to destroy cancer cells.
Following consultation, the patient is “simulated” for tumor localization to ensure reproducibility and accuracy of treatment. The simulation consists of a CT scan of the specific area where the tumor or area of interest is located. The radiation oncologist decides on the specific treatment modality and radiation dosage based on the tumor type, stage, and location of the cancer. CT scans, alone or in combination with MRI or PET scans allow the physician to map out the exact location of the area to be treated. Medical dosimetrists use their knowledge and skills in conjunction with advanced computer technology to design a treatment plan specifically for each patient. Here at Bismarck Cancer Center, our Medical Dosimetrists work closely with the Radiation Oncologist to develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient’s specific plan of care.

In this position and as Ryan Monson a member of the credit union’s executive team, Monson will manage all aspects of Capital Credit Union’s accounting department including asset liability management, budgeting, cost accounting, forecasting and investment portfolio management. In addition, he will oversee the credit union’s human resources department. Monson graduated from the University of North Dakota in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and is a certified public accountant. BAC PROMOTES GOVEN Donnie Goven has been working part time as a Junior Technician with Bismarck Aero Center (BAC) since 2017. Immediately after Donnie Goven completing High School in Turtle Lake, he started commuting to the Mandan Airport to work as a Maintenance Assistant. His summer experience solidified his interest aviation maintenance and he attended Northland Community Technical College in Thief River Falls to receive his A&P license. Upon completion, Goven continued working at BAC during the summer and winter breaks while attending the University of North Dakota for his bachelor’s in aviation maintenance management. During his fourth summer, he spent the majority of his time learning the transactional side of the aircraft maintenance business and spent most of his time working with our software programs. During his time at UND, Donnie also worked in the university’s aircraft maintenance department, conducting maintenance on their fleet of piper aircraft.
