A ‘vile and disgusting’ smell is being reported across Birmingham making some people feel sick and causing them to close their windows. People across the city have reported the whiff today (September 13) from Sutton Coldfield in the north to Kings Heath, Selly Oak and Bournville in the south.

There are also reports of the 'cheesy feet' smell pervading across the east of Brum including Sheldon, Yardley, Hodge Hill, Castle Bromwich, Castle Vale and Erdington. Disgusted city residents have taken to social media to express their disgust.

Fingers John (@jnafr) had tweeted: “What is the horrendous smell #cheesyfeet in the air around Four Oaks, Mere Green, Sutton Coldfield. Is there a gas leak?”

Others reporting the smell in Sutton with Ramandeep Kaur saying: “It’s gross! Eldest just came home from school and said it smells like a sewer. We are in Sutton Coldfield.” And Ella Cabrera-Quinn Tweeting: “Why does Sutton Coldfield smell like someone’s had a whitey.”

But its not just the Royal Town sensing the pong. Matthew Bowater Tweeted: “Does anyone know why the strong smell of s**t in the air Sheldon, Yardley way?” Funcan Films replied: “Can smell it in Kings Heath too!” While ‘Rational Weirdo’ added: “Had to close windows, stunk the whole house out!!”

While Wahaab said: “Absolutely disgusting smell here in Birmingham anyone else smell it? He was not alone with Jane (@localnotail) saying: “I can smell it too. Just came out of work and checked my shoes in case I had stepped in something bad, but nothing. Same smell when I got out of the car too in B12 (Balsall Heath, Sparkbrook & Highgate area.”

Those in Bromford and Firs in the Castle Bromwich area have been posting on their neighbourhood’s Facebook page. Rebecca Sullivan said: “Does anybody know wht this stinking smell is all over the area smelt it from town.” Mel Waite said: “Same over on Vale.”

Kate Rose said: “My house stinks. Vile isn’t it. With Rebecca replying: “It's disgusting I've got candles burning everywhere lol”. Tammy Hill has had to seal her home and said: “I had to shut my windows and balcony door was making me heave absolutely stinks.”

Collette Little said: “It’s everywhere in Erdington. It’s vile.” While Mandy Barritt said: Same here! Selly Oak side of the city , I thought someone had a s**** on my bus.”

Food blogger, Laura aka Bite Your Brum tweeted: “Why does Birmingham stink of literal s*** today?” With those replying speculating it could be muck spreading. With people from Moseley, B4 – the city centre, B30 Bournville way, B27 Acockc Green, B74 in Sutton Coldfield and B13 Billesley/Moseley all reporting the same issue.

BirminghamLive has contacted Birmingham City Council, the Environment Agency in the West Midlands and Cadent, responsible for the gas network asking for a comment on the issue causing a citywide stink.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency in the region said: "We have not had complaints today. Anyone who wishes to report any issue can call 0800 80 70 60."
