Desperate to make her time at Tanglewood University count, Anne Hill resorts to funding her textbook in an uncharacteristic manner.

I must confess, I didn’t even read the blurb for this book when applying to early read. I saw the title, guessed at the major trope (not a leap, I know), and, knowing that it was being written by Skye Warren, it was a given. So, I wasn’t at all ready for that cliffhanger. But, this new series is so much more than a forbidden romance. Don’t get me wrong, there is spice and angst. There are also tragic back stories, unexpected emotions, and secrets out the wazoo - I’m looking at you Professor Stratford because I don’t believe that spiel you’re selling. While I’m ready to know all the things, I’m super excited for this new world of Tanglewood University. Is it June 25 yet?!

An okay read for me. I liked this quite enough. The secret society mystery was what kept me mostly turning those pages. I like Skye Warren’s written. It was fast paced, the characters were half decent, the smut was relatively good which I actually enjoyed although the romance was a bit off.

I wish we had the MMC’s pov. The FMC however got on my nerves more times than I like with a goody two shoes and woe-is-me attitude 🙄

This ends on a cliffhanger so I’m looking forward to the next book hopefully with a FMC with an adjusted attitude

Skye Warren strikes again 👀👀👀

That statement is a double edge sword because yes, in true Skye Warren fashion, she gifts us with an intriguing, erotic, suspenseful, ”cannot wait to see what twist comes up when I turn the page” student/professor storyline, but, it’s only the beginning and I am somewhat #twitchy about it all now. That’s the double edge. I started reading and I was in it and then, in true Skye Warren fashion she turned what I thought would be a complete story into not a complete story. I only have myself to blame because I know this woman and her usage of the word *series but not really* LOL but in true Jessica form, I went in blind as a bat, so my bad, but I’m still #twitchy about the cliffhanger, just at myself. Feel me? LOL

WHY IS SHE LIKE THIS?? (but I love you Skye!)

So, a couple hundred words later and I’ve told you basically nothing about The Professor book itself which spoiler alert I cannot anyways because it is only the beginning of a tangled web of ”wait, what is even happening right now?”. I’ll see you guys in June when I read The Student which is sure to upend everything I’ve read thus far in a glorious way, as Skye often does! Until then ;)

4.5 STARS I can easily round to 5!

I'm rating this book 4.5 stars. I loved it but I don't like books ending on a cliffhanger. Atleast the author should have warned that in the beginning.

What happens when your friend gets her date for the night but you just sit there feeling nervous about the whole situation? What happens when someone comes to you and you finally get to have that fun night? What happens when you enjoyed your night and now you are back to your normal college life? What happens when you get to know that a new professor will be teaching your class starting today? What happens when you hear a voice and turns around to notice it's the same guy you had a fun night with? What happens when you get to know that he's your new professor? What do you think will now happen? Moreover what do you think will happen when you get to know he is also your ex-boyfriends dad? Isn't it a crazy twist???

This follows Anne who comes from a broken home. Anne is very intelligent, mature and attending college to have freedom and to make a career for herself. One night changes everything after a desperate need of quick cash to buy her college books to start the semester off right. Little did she know going down this path would be mysterious and full of secrets.

This was fantastic and kept me gripped the whole way through. Finished within 24 hours of starting it. I loved how Anne is so smart and comes from a background of poverty and a toxic family environment. She is trying to make something of herself. Then we have Professor Stratford what a dominant man. Sign me up because the “yes sir” sent me feral. The intimate space that was intense teaching in a way was delicious. The secret society element was mysterious and dangerous.
I did not know where it was going to go or how it would end. The ending ripped at my heart. Will need to jump to the next book soon.

The audiobook narration was brilliant by Alexis and made this an enjoyable experience and easy to consume.

College student Anne has been determined to pay for her education. Needing to make quick cash, she agrees to go out of her comfort zone to do one night with a stranger. Having what she needs, Anne can now focus on school and having the memories of her childhood and family drama one bus ride away. Little does she know, that night is going to not only affect her present, but also her future.

Walking into her new Shakespeare class, Anne has no idea that the one person who has seen her in her most intimate form is also her professor. If that wasn't enough, he's also her ex boyfriend's father. Things are about to get MESSY.

I really loved that this was a forbidden romance that had some twists and turns. Not only did the heroine and side characters have a past, but the hero as well. I wanted to go more in depth with the main characters but I liked how the author set everything up letting us know that there's a lot more to come in book two. I definitely didn't like how things ended and I feel like it was rushed to give us a shock value but I'm very curious to see how everything is going to play out.

If you're looking for a steamy forbidden student/ teacher mystery romance, then you should give this one a try.

Please note: This ends on a cliffhanger

This was ADDICTING, I could not put it down! Besides the fact that is has my favorite tropes, there are so many fascinating topics & focuses within the story. And who doesn’t love a secret society 👀👀 especially when you have no idea who is actually a part of it or pretending to be…

I’m not kidding when I tell you that within the first few chapters we get some coochie tingling spice & I was not ready for that when I spontaneously started to listen to it. OW OWWWW

Thank you must love audio for this awesome story & I can’t wait for the next book!!!?? The cliffhanger though omg 😭😭 I need to know what the heck happens IMMEDIATELY! The end had me jolting around like I was in a bumper car!!!

I wanted so desperately to love this. Age gap, taboo, student/professor tropes are my kryptonite. But this just wasn’t it.

The dynamic between the two main characters didn’t make a lot of sense and there honestly wasn’t a lot of focus on them other than the smut and as much smut as there is, it’s so tightly compacted compared to this random secret society mystery that the author is trying to throw at you as well.

I didn’t love the cliffhanger ending, and I definitely think this wasn’t marketed as a series. I thought I was getting into a taboo, age gap, contemporary romance, but my expectations unfortunately were not met. Maybe if I knew what I was getting myself into I would’ve enjoyed it a little bit more.

Like I said, the dynamic between the two main characters fell really really flat and felt a little pretentious. It was two people who had nothing in common, but hot sex and had memorized a few lines from Shakespeare.

The Professor is the first book in Skye Warren's new Tanglewood University trilogy. I love a good forbidden student/professor trope so I dived right into the book as soon as release day came and I barely came up for air. I loved the story and characters (both main and secondary) so much that I could barely put my e-reader down. So of course I flew right through the book and it actually ended up as my first 5 star read of the year!

This story started out with Anne, the main female character, who along with her roommate and best friend Daisy are at a very expensive and fancy hotel hoping to get picked up by men who will pay for their company. Financially Anne has no help from her parents and her scholarship doesn't cover the expensive textbooks she badly needs. This way Anne meets Will, a hot dominating older man and they have a hot scorching night together. Of course when Anne goes to class she finds out he's professor William Stratford, her new teacher of Advanced Comparative Analysis of Literature. Later on we also find out that Professor Stratford is Anne's ex-boyfriend's father as well. That's pretty much the premise of the story but it's so much more than your run-of-the-mill student/professor romance trope. I was absolutely taken with not only the story but also the characters who were all really flawed in their own ways but oh so very intriguing. I was obsessed, there's no other way to put it to words.

Anne and professor Stratford together? Skye really outdid herself with the sex scenes. Hot doesn't even begin to cover them. They were steamy as fuck, sensuous, very erotic and yet so beautifully written. And beyond that it was clear that Anne and Will were forming a true connection, which I just loved reading about. I adored them so much and then Skye had to break my heart as per usual. Luckily more books are to come and hopefully they will heal my heart.

So like I said, this is not your run-of-the-mill student/professor story. It had so much more than that. Don't get me wrong the forbidden romance between Anne and professor Stratford was hot as hell and very tantalizing but I did love that there also was an enthralling mystery surrounding a secret society called 'The Shakespeare Society' on campus. And I feel like with everything I know now and especially with the way the story ended that we've only glimpsed what the Shakespeare Society is really about. Let's just say that I'm both super intrigued and kind of scared of it.

The Professor is really a layered kind of story. We have the forbidden romance between Anne and professor Stratford, the mysterious secret society but we also have Daisy who is roommates with Anne and also best friends with her. First of all, she is one awesome character. I loved her so much and how she and Anne relied on each other since they both have unsupportive parents. We find out a little about Daisy's background and that she comes from a cult-like family. And without spoiling too much, it doesn't look really good for Daisy. I wonder if we'll learn more abou her in the next book or if she even might get her own book at some point. I do hope so!

This book was also very much a love story to Shakespeare and his work. The main one that was talked about in it was, unsurprisingly, Romeo and Juliet. It's one of the subjects that professor Stratford is teaching in his class and of course the forbidden love aspect of Romeo and Juliet is adaptable to Anne and professor Stratford's relationship. I just really love Skye for adding this to the story. It was simply perfection. So beautiful and well-written.

This book features many of my favourites, an academic setting, forbidden relationship, teacher student trope, a mysterious society entirely dedicated to Shakespeare and of course, an analysis of The Bard’s work. The author sagely mixes all these ingredients and the result is a heady cocktail topped with some delicious steam.

~𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒏’𝒕 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 𝒐𝒓 𝒉𝒚𝒑𝒐𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍. 𝒀𝒐𝒖’𝒓𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒍𝒚… 𝒚𝒐𝒖~

Professor William Stratford is the new teacher at Tanglewood University, his expertise brings a fresh perspective on a very famous play by Shakespeare, his new approach sheds light on some key issues residing at the heart of Romeo and Juliet. However his allure doesn’t stop at his academic achievement an aura of mystery surrounds his enigmatic persona

~𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒂 𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍 𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕, 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒊𝒕 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒎𝒚 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚, 𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒎𝒚 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒎𝒖𝒕𝒆~

Anne Hill is a clever student who can attend the prestigious Tanglewood University thanks to a scholarship. However her intellect isn’t enough to cover all the costs associated to such an important institution. As if she needed further proof that education isn’t for everyone her lack of money is a constant reminder, but little Miss Hill won’t be deterred, she won’t let anyone deny her knowledge.

~“𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆, 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒇 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒈𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒅𝒚.”~

A fateful evening Will and Anne’s paths cross, they don’t know anything about each other, but their encounter awakes desires and sinful lust that are both dangerous and forbidden. As they navigate their way through a world made of deception, struggle for power and hidden knowledge they cannot escape the impending doom which may ultimately destroy them.

~𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒊𝒔𝒏’𝒕 𝒂 𝒈𝒊𝒇𝒕. 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒂 𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆~

The clever way in which the author names her characters is a stark reference to the Shakespearean world and my inner nerds lightened up with each reference. The story is told by Anne’s POV, despite her tragic story she portrays a strong and determined young woman who is discovering her identity. Will is a fascinating strong man whose filthy mouth and experience mixed with a dose of mystery were both enthralling and sexy. The narrative pace was somewhat slowed down by a few redundancies but the interest in the story was kept alive by the dynamic moments and the vivacity of the side characters.

𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒕’𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒃𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂 𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘𝒔 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒎𝒚 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚 𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈. 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝒂 𝒎𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒅𝒚 𝑰’𝒗𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆.

I have always been fascinated by the Tanglewood universe and when I heard I could go back I was giddy with excitement. I loved those glimpse and cameos and I cannot wait to read what’s in the next opus. Needless to say I’m also looking forward to discovering which is the next play we’re going to analyse! That cliffhanger at the end of part one left a devastated Anne in tatters. I felt her pain, I can’t wait to see how she’ll navigate through the sea of trouble, will she take arms against it? Or will she suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune? To say I’m overjoyed this story is set in the university would be an understatement, although I enjoyed getting to know the other side of this corrupted world I missed the academic side. If your curiosity has been picked make sure to check the other series set in Tanglewood.

Narration 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧

I went into this blind, not really knowing anything about it other than professor/student. That was enough to intrigue me to want to read it. Now color me surprised when I get to the end and find out it’s a trilogy! I don’t know how Will is going to redeem himself and we end up with an HEA, but I suspect quite a few twists and turns along the way. It seems our girl Anne has gotten herself entangled in quite the predicament with a secret society, dangerous professors and possibly other staff members, her lying parents. Who knows who is telling the truth at this point?!

Alexis did a fantastic job narrating this one. It’s a single POV and dual style, so she’s with us the whole time. This is the first of Alexis’s narrations I’ve listened to but I do have others of her on my TBL and I have been following her on IG for a while and she’s so much fun. I can’t wait to see what else she narrates and she’s gonna be a big name in the audiobook world soon, I can see it!

this book had me on my TOES. the second i thought i knew something it was like “teehee, no you don’t”. i didn’t realize this was going to be made into a series so the cliffhanger had me SHOCKED.
Anne prides herself on being smart and she kind of always keeps all her feelings pent up inside her, she doesn’t like to let people in too closely and it seems difficult for her to develop relationships at times. and then she meets Will and she’s immediately drawn to him no matter what she does.
i hope in the second book we see a lot more of Daisy because i LOVED her, and that daisy helps anne grow into more of a outspoken - take no shit, kinda woman.

realizing this was going to be a series made me rate it higher because there were a decent amount of side characters that i was questioning why they were being introduced.
the ending truly gave me an “oh shit” factor, i had to step back and think about my life choices.

i can’t wait for the second book!

this was provided to me as an ARC but all thoughts and opinions are my own

I love a good, forbidden romance book, especially the whole professor/student trope, with this one being no exception. I devoured it! Wow, it was brilliant….the only thing I'm going to complain about is the way that it was left. I won't explain why so as to not spoil it, but you'll understand what I mean if you read. The ending was so unexpected and a total 180 from the rest of the book….amazing! I adore when an author can throw in a spanner in the works and when it is one that I haven't already anticipated, well, that makes it even better. The plot and the character development from this author were really good, and the spice! Holy moly….the spice was hitting in all the right spots; the mouth on Will was just….*chefs kiss*....I need more! I can't wait to read the next book. Whilst the book was on the shorter side of what I normally prefer, this didn't take anything away from the story. At no point did I feel like I had missed something or that stuff had been glossed over. This has been written beautifully.
Would 10/10 recommend!

Holy moly! This book has everything! Fabulous writing and use of language, heat, deep eroticism, excellent character development, and a plot that had intrigue and twists. I could not put it down. Skye Warren always produces books that draw you into the world she creates and The Professor is definitely no exception. With so many of my favourite themes entwined in this book, there was no chance that I wouldn't love every word! Will, a brilliant professor, daring dominant and Anne, a brave, inexperienced young woman who is immersed in a world so very new to her. She is brilliant, a clever wordsmith, just like Will and a loyal daughter and friend.
Leaving us with held breaths, Skye Warren has ensured that this new trilogy is a must-read! 💖💖💖💖💖

That definitely took a veering, sharp, turn there at the end! Before that though, wow, the heat and chemistry between Anne and Will, crazy stuff. And the affection and bond between Anne and Daisy, that made certain plot points all the more compelling. I’m still confused, and worried, and questioning the motives of a couple of people, so I hope those all get settled in the next book (and a lot more heat is heading our way I’m sure!)

Anne Hill needs money for her expenses at college. She figured using herself for a night to make it would be a good idea. Well, that is until the handsome man interested in her ends up being more than just a stranger. Professor William Stratford isn’t just a handsome man that she can’t forget…he also happens to be her new advanced lit teacher! Can this sweet temptation ever be denied. Hold on to your knickers because this takes off from the very first chapter and continues until the shocking cliffhanger. Beauty and brains is a dangerous combination for William to deny. There is something he isn’t saying though that questions why is he back in Tanglewood? I’m loving this new taboo romantic mystery bathed in Shakespearian themes and can’t wait for book two. Told in Anne’s POV

ARC gratefully received in exchange for an honest review.

I wanted to like this book, but I really felt like it was trying to do too many things at once. At the same time, I didn't feel like it had nearly enough interaction between the love interests of this story.

This was not at all what I was expecting. I liked elements of it. I enjoyed the secret society plot, but I don't think it was well done, and it ended up feeling like an afterthought.

Then, you have the plotline of Anne's difficult home life. Her parents are manipulative and abusive. Then you find out that , which seems to lead nowhere.

You also have Anne's best friend Daisy. She is very confident in her sexuality and is like an ex member of a very religious sector. So it does make sense that she seems to have gone to a completely opposite lifestyle. But then the character takes a turn and I suppose I don't really understand the point of that story line.

Then you have Will and Anne, the professor and student. I enjoyed the interactions you do get between these 2 characters and the mystery of Will. However, there seemed to be very few of them to call it a romance.

The best part of the book for me was the spice, particularly the scene in the empty classroom. I actually loved that!

Mesmerising, erotic, lyrical.

I wasn't sure what I would find beyond the thrill of a forbidden story between a professor and his young student. This goes way beyond my wanton expectations.

It's beautifully written. It's arousing. It's also magnificent.

The first chapters had me in the grasp of hypnosis. I was engrossed in that twisted yet poetic first encounter between the prey and the predator. Red-hot fantasy encased in moving feelings, tantalizing discovery and unstoppable lust. Perfect.

The story, however, goes deeper. It tackles Shakespeare, roots that are impossible to outrun, a connection that defies society and the always alluring setting of Tanglewood.

To my surprise, the story packs layer upon layer of little plot twists that pile up to change assumptions, complicate things and obliterate everything the reader believed about survivor Anne, her fascinating friend Daisy (I crave her story), that deviously hot professor and the enigmatic Tanglewood University.

Brace yourself for a rollercoaster of clever mystery and dark secrets. To say that I must read the next book is an understatement.

If you liked Gilmore Girls and wished Rory had slept with a professor while discovering the life and death brigade at Yale, this book might have just been written for you.

Going into this you know it’s short you’re not going to get to the same depth that a 400+ page book would get but The Professor still does a good job of exploring Anne’s backstory and motivations. We watch her struggle and learn about herself while navigating the different types of relationships in her life.
Compared to some of the newer romance novels the smut scenes feel a little short in the professor. That said, they are still great and the setting is always excellent but it’s more a paragraph to a page than multiple chapters of the one scene.

It could be a little stagnant in the beginning but bottom line I would still recommend it to someone looking for the student/teacher novel.

I received this advanced readers copy in exchange for a review. My thoughts and opinions are my own.

Ps the names of the characters are excellent

Quero.

If you like student/professor forbidden romance, this book will probably be right up your alley! The two main characters are intelligent and mature. I did find that this book dragged quite a bit for me, and I think it's because while I liked the main characters, I didn't quite feel invested in them. I also felt like one of the major plot points was solved abruptly toward the end of the story, and I wished it had been drawn out more to provide a more dramatic effect.

This book ends on a cliffhanger, and readers will need to be prepared to read the next book to find out what happens next!

Holy mind fuck. I forgot I requested this and then briefly looked at book details before starting my ARC and it was way more than what I thought it would be.

We start out with Anne the FMC and her best friend Daisy. They are in the wealthy part of town looking for a hookup for money. (This part had some plot holes I felt like, it def seemed more hookerish than escort like just because of how it was described)

After that night we see that Anne and Daisy are in college and are roommates. They start their semester and who is Anne’s new comparative literature professor? The guy she slept with. He also happens to be her ex boyfriends dad💀.

Daisy convinces Anne to go to a party a secret society is hosting one night and that’s when the mystery begins. Anne is invited to join and hesitant based off of what she has heard but motivated because the dean wants an inside man. When things get dangerous during her initiation she decides to be done with things.

Things start to spiral and Daisy leaves unexpectedly leaving only a note and Anne runs to her professor for comfort. She stays the night and in the morning when she is snooping she realizes she has been wrong about everything the entire time.

This had it all, the spice, the forbidden, the sadness, the lies. OMFG I am so ready for book two and this one isn’t even out yet. Read this shit I am telling you you must!!

The Professor by Skye Warren provides the allure of forbidden romance intertwined with the complexity of secrets and societal expectations. Anne Hill finds herself entangled in a web of desire and deception when she unwittingly becomes involved with her new professor, William Stratford, who also happens to be her ex-boyfriend's father. The Professor embodies "look but don't touch." Even I could not resist this man—tall, dark, handsome, intelligent, and wearing glasses!

The author masterfully crafts a compelling story filled with tension, passion, and the moral dilemmas that arise when boundaries are blurred. As Anne navigates the treacherous waters of love and loyalty, readers are drawn into a compelling exploration of the consequences of succumbing to forbidden desires.

𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂, 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂? 𝗧𝗶𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗰*𝗰𝗸 𝘀𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗰$𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

The storytelling prowess shines, delivering a captivating tale that keeps readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. With richly developed characters and a plot filled with twists and turns, the novel also offers a thrilling journey into the mysterious world of a secret society.

The Professor is a gripping read that promises to enthrall fans of forbidden romance filled with sexual danger.

Anne Hill tries her hand at escorting, and meets a man who makes her feel like she belongs.

Who happens to be her professor… and that’s not even the biggest twist about his identity. 👀

I went into this completely blind and that cliffhanger about brought me to my knees. Oh my god.

I’m not going to stop thinking about this book for awhile. I rebuke that ending. REBUKE. No but truly, I can’t wait for the sequel!!!!

I was a little worried with how short this was when I saw the page count. I thought it was going to be just erotica. Boy was I wrong (thankfully!) This 244 page book was packed with plot. It was so fun!!

This was my first Skye Warren book if you can’t tell, but definitely not my last!!

Skye Warrens writing is so intelligent, but easy to read. I especially love her pop culture references and dry humor.

I can’t wait to read more about this university, this world, and all its secret societies!!!!

Thank you to the Must Love Audio team for my ALC.

I've liked Skye Warren's stories before, so I'm a bit surprised that The Professor missed the mark for me. It had all the elements I generally like: forbidden/taboo, dark academia, secret society, masquerade party, ex-boyfriend's dad, and student/professor.

The synopsis should have clarified the set up: Anne doesn't just have a one night stand with a man who ends up being her new professor. She has a paid one night stand with him because she needs money to buy a textbook for class. I couldn't suspend disbelief about Anne's motivation. This is a student who works at the university library. Girl...course reserves exist...and as library staff, she could easily access the course reserves and scan the pages. I don't seek too much realism in romance novels, but the motivating factor pushing Anne to sell herself for sex just didn't make sense to me. At least create a believable motivating factor. I also noticed that a few of the descriptions of the university were outdated. Maybe a lack of knowledge on how universities function today is the main issue with the writing?

In addition to the weak set up, there are so many cliches in this story. Anne is of course a 20-year-old bookworm English major. There's a bit of a "I'm not like other girls because I like books and Shakespeare and big words and I'm an English major and a virgin with mousy brown hair." Tooooo many cliches all at once. And at one point, Anne basically admitted that losing her virginity finally made her a woman (yikes)...even though she herself kept saying that virginity is a social construct. So, which is it, Anne??

Anyway, I kept reading because I wanted to learn more about the secret society. I also found Daisy's story a lot more interesting than Anne's. There was one revelation that surprised me, so kudos for that. But there were a couple of inconsistencies with Anne that didn't add up. And I am not even gonna talk about Will because his character is very superficial (so far?). The next two books will probably have more information on him, but I will not be continuing this series. I am not interested in the romance nor am I interested in the main characters.

Honestly, the best part about this book is the audiobook narrator. This is my first time listening to Alexis Paige and she did such a good job narrating this story. She had a great variety of different voices for the characters and I never had a hard time distinguishing who was speaking. In particular, it was easy to distinguish the Anne's narration, Anne's internal voice, and Anne's actual dialogues, and let's just say that not all narrators can nail those three different levels of voice acting.

Overall, I've liked Skye Warren's stories before. But this one was superficial, predictable for the most part, unoriginal, and poorly executed.

₊ ⊹”i find the absence of your taste unbearable.”₊ ⊹

*:・゚my thoughts┊ this was quite literally nothing like what i had imagined or hoped it would be, but somehow i didn’t really hate it. more of a 2.5 but i feel generous and am rounding it to 3 stars

i didn’t realize that this was the first in a trilogy, i thought it’d be like a connecting series of companion novels, so i was literally shocked at the end and the cliffhanger lmao

i wasn’t the biggest fan of really anything in this book, besides the smut, but somehow it kept me invested and interested and entertained. i thought anne was a really “woe is me” kind of character, like really naive and kind of stupid, which goes against her whole supposed smartness. definitely book smart but not street smart, i guess?

i was really intrigued by the secret society aspect; it’s been awhile since i’ve read anything with that plot and i realized i really miss reading things besides small town romances, as much as i love them lol. it was a fun aspect, though it felt underdeveloped. really hoping to learn more information about the society in the next book!

i was also thrown by the “romantic” relationship. it definitely did not turn out as expected (or hoped) and so i was a little let down by it, but i feel like there’s potential for some good angst in the next book. i enjoyed will’s character a little more, and wished this was dual pov to get his perspective throughout the book.

this wasn’t really the best book, but i do feel like it could be a promising beginning for the trilogy. i’m hoping it leads to some character development (especially from anne), as well as really building upon the secret society!
