Joplin Police investigating officer-involved shooting, crime scene tape across West 7th

UPDATE:Â Only one shot was fired by the officer. The suspect was transported Priority1 to Freeman West for his gunshot wound injury which is believed to be non-life threatening.
The identification of the suspect is currently being withheld as he has been placed on a 96-hour mental health evaluation hold. He is currently receiving services and treatment.

As the investigation continues, further details regarding what led up to the officer involved shooting may be released.

JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) - The Joplin Police Department is investigating following an officer-involved shooting on Friday morning.
According to JPD, about 8:30 a.m., an officer responded to a suspicious person call near 7th and Sergeant.
During the incident, an officer fired his gun, hitting the subject.
According to JPD, aid was immediately given to the subject. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of what's believed to be a non-life threatening gunshot injury.

The officer was not injured. As JPD protocol the officer is placed on leave immediately as the investigation begins.Â
JPD said there's no threat to the public.
Westbound 7th traffic was halted Moffet Ave to Sergeant Ave as yellow crime scene tape surrounded about 1/2 block area along the sidewalk. About 10:30 a.m. the westbound lanes were reopened to all traffic.Â
